Description
Runaway

About the music:
This soundtrack was heavily inspired by the Stranger Things soundtrack. I've always had a special plays for synthesizers and the 80s and the Stranger Things soundtrack really hit me with that. I decided to use synthesizers to capture an eighties feeling but still give it my own twist such as the odd time signatures and the guitars for example. The sounds used in Stranger Things also gave me this runaway feeling so that's why I went with it.

Story:

The year is 1987, the player lives in a post-apocalyptic world. A science experiment had gone wrong and caused the corruption of the human brain, it turned them into insane, aggressive and territorial creatures. The player lives in a safe camp where a big group of survivors live under the ''safety'' of the Stable Corporation. The player finds out that the Stable corporation isn’t looking to help the survivors but rather trap them and experiment on them in isolation, thus evil is uncovered. The players tries to escape, hoping to find the Paradise that was rumoured to be out in the world somewhere. The Stable corporation denied the existence of this so-called Paradise to avoid losing their test subjects. Every man who had tried to escape to find the Paradise, was never found again, yet never even left the premises.

After the player makes their first steps outside Stable ground they travel towards the mysterious Paradise not knowing if it even exists, only driven by the rumours and stories they heard about it. But before they know it, Stable soldiers are trying to hunt down the player. The player avoids confrontation but is ambushed by a lone soldier, the soldier calls for backup and the player uses the environment to kill the soldier before running away. Backup arrives to a dead soldier, thrown off a bridge, slammed against rocks. Stable gambles with their soldiers’ lives and sends even more out to the outside world, threatening the runaway.

In the distance the player sees a city, one building has a very faint light in it and the players objective is to reach that light for signs of other escapees. Using stealth to navigate the city and buildings, the player finally reaches the building with the faint light. Upon entering the player is immediately caught in a trap and is knocked out.

When the player wakes up he is greeted by other humans, but they weren’t runaways. They were just left for dead when the building got swarmed. The other humans realize that the player isn’t a threat and they untie him. The player tells the survivors about the Paradise and after long consideration, the survivors decide that they will accompany the player as they won’t accomplish anything by staying in the city.

Accompanied by new friends, the player continues on the quest but soon encounters the true horror and danger of the outside world. They encounter the Outsiders. These were the corrupt humans that were hit by the failed science experiment, they spread by breaking through a humans skull, reaching their brain and infecting it. After the infection the brain parts of the brain start to rot away due to the corruption.

After travelling a long way, Paradise finally turns into reality. The player is close to their end point but is ambushed by Stable. Stable made a gamble sending out more forces but their goal had been achieved, the player only had to lead them to the Paradise. Threatening to kill the player and take over the Paradise. The player now learns the even bigger truth about Stable: Stable is the reason for the entire corruption and were always able to stop the spread and save humanity, but they didn’t. They had only created a far bigger and worse experiment. All the people who had been taken away by Stable were fused into one big monster. The player and their friends take on the fight and start battling evil.

Before nearly losing the fight for what’s left of humanity, the player is suddenly helped. After almost all hope was gone, hundreds of troops come storming out of Paradise, giving the player the advantage. Evil is defeated and the player is welcomed into Paradise and is given special treatment. The player and their friends are given good living conditions, turning their live into their own Paradise.

The DAW I used FL Studio, the synths I used come from built in plugins such as harmor, harmless and sawer although harmor and harmless were only used in one track.

I also used EZDrummer for the acoustic drum parts and Odin II for the guitar. To create that heavy guitar sound I used iZotope Trash.

I used some effects like kHs ladder filter, kHs reverb, kHs filter and kHs reverser.

I used iZotope neutron 3 visual mixer to do some stereo mixing.

Yesss this is gritty and crunchy and full of texture and I love it! Very apocalyptic and I totally hear the Stranger Things inspiration. The Heroes Theme makes me feel like the hero has some kind of super power that helps battle the outsiders. Kinda like eleven. My favorite track has to be the combat theme. There's so much good stuff in there - the brooding synth hits and the intermittent walls of sound. It gives me Attack on Titan vibes almost. The hugeness of the sound makes me feel like something is crashing around and knocking down buildings. Very effective! The final track is quite beautiful too. Overall great soundtrack!

Thanks a lot!

Title - The opening track reminds me of the older Command & Conquers for some reason. That's a good thing, because I quite like Kleipacki's work.

Evil Uncovered - I quite like how this one builds up. Very nice.

First Steps - Quite like the arp you open up with.

The Outside World - Nice. Again a cool creamy arp. Also quite like the sweeping resonance on the bass pad.

Friends - I like the chugging bassline in this one. Helps propel the track forward. Also nice once it opens up to the arp. This is my second favourite in this soundtrack.

The Outsiders - I really like this one. I think the space and detune on that arp synth around the 1 minute mark is just gorgeous. Probably my favourite synth patch on this soundtrack.

Battling Evil - Things are getting serious :D

Evil Defeated - I think this is also a strong track. Quite like the synth patch at the end. It echoes out nicely.

Paradise - This sounds like a victory theme.

Runaway Closure - Cool. Is this the ending credits? :D It certainly sounds like a credits theme. And a good one at that.

I think there quite some really cool synth tracks in here. If I had to nitpick anything, I would say it would've been cool to have a tad more processing on some of the synths. But that may just be my personal preference talking. It sounded great already! You definitely captured that 80s feel and it did feel like you were telling a story. Each of the tracks felt like they had a purpose and they fulfilled that purpose quite well.

This is absolutely one of the stand-outs for me so far. You’ve captured exactly what you’re looking for, and the compositions are well-balanced, coherent, and well mixed. Great job!

Thank you so much!

Nice old school synths! Each track matches the description very nicely. The Outsiders is so menacing, I love it. Same with Battling Evil, only wish there was some harder percussion, but it still works just fine for a battle theme! Love the use of the Dorian mode in Paradise, really gives a victorious vibe that stands out from the darker tracks. Overall, these synth tracks paint a deep, post-apocalyptic atmosphere and would love to hear these in a game.

I really like the 80s feeling you created, very good job !

I was thinking Stranger Things even before I had seen it in your description, so you absolutely nailed that! I think the synths and style play well for something that sets the mood while not interfering with the main event at hand. I think I would like to hear a few more standout melodies / instrumentation cut through some of the droning portions, though!

Developer

Glad I was able to get the mood right and thank you for the feedback on the instrumentation as well, very useful!

Cool tracks! Love the battle theme the most because it's so powerful. You made awesome tracks using minimum instruments for this. That's really impressive! Good work^

Track 1: Cool opening track, for some reason I feel like I'm about to play a round of Call of Duty Zombies... very intense, with some lovely crunchy harmonies!

Track 2: I love how one track tapers into the next! Another very interesting-sounding track, which I believe is in 7/8-- love a nice mixed meter!

Track 3: good stuff! it's very similar to the first few tracks, so I'm hoping there will be some more variety in the coming tracks.

Track 4: this track felt slightly repetitive to me-- don't stress about making tracks really long. As long as you say what you want with the music, it need not be repeated too much. You have a great voice as a composer-- trust yourself that you don't need to repeat things too much, okay?

Track 5: ah, this is an awesome one-- it's not very long, but it's full of energy, cool synths, interesting material, and a great sound. I loved it!

Track 6: another really cool track with that epic Stranger Things sound. All the wind and noise really gives it an eerie feel, as though evil creatures are approaching.

Track 7: I loved when this track ramped up! It somehow sounded like flamethrowing a sea of corrupt humanoid monsters... which I imagine is just what you were going for... it's modal, in an interesting mixed meter, and just a downright banger. Love it!

Track 8: This track feels like it belongs at the end of an Episode of Stranger things, for sure.

Track 9: Awesome final battle music!

Track 10: a great conclusion to a dreamy synth-filled soundtrack, and I enjoy how closely each track is linked to the story.

I appreciated your use of mixed meter and crunchy harmonies throughout! Every track sounded great. Keep writing!

Developer

Thank you so much for the feedback! I really appreciate you listening to all the tracks and giving proper feedback and thoughts on them, thank you!

You really nailed that Stranger Things vibe. Great atmosphere. very dark throughout. Would also fit well in a cyberpunk setting. Some elements also reminded me of Frank Klepacki's soundtrack to the original Command & Conquer. The combat theme is epic! Very cool.

Thank you! Just listened to Frank Klepacki's work on Command & Conquer and I can see how that sort of similar, I think you've just given me a new album to binge listen to.
