Description
Runaway, but from whom ?

This is the name of a fictionnal video game. It features 2D cinematic platform mechanics, with an emphasis on environmental storytelling.

Follow the story of a being, forced to flee its home town. They discover a forest, imbued with mysticism and magical creatures, and decide to take cover in it.

The overall narrative structure is a tragedy.

Track #1 - Main menu and intro cutscene

This track accompagnies the intro cutscene by showing the main protagonist and what they're running from. It also shows their entrance in the forest.

Track # 2 - The Call

This track contains all music layers for the first level. The protagonist enters the forest and hears voices singing. They look for their source, and discover what the deep forest has to offer.

But as soon as the protagonist meets the mythical creature within the forest, they realise that they are threatening for them. And that despite being in need for help, they could also harm.

#Adaptative music

This is a well known feature in video games where the music adapts itself with the imput of the player or the game state. For example, some instrument layer that softens or that emerges as soon as the player approaches an object in the game. Great examples are Furi or levels in Celeste.

For this project, the soundtrack could loop each portion and extend the more the player advances in the forest.

#OST composing jam 2022

This soundtrack was made for the OST composing jam #4 with the theme "Runaway" as inspiration.

The DAW used was "Magix music Maker", no loop or sample was used and the voice is mine. The overall OST is a blend of multiple genres.

Theme:

Runaway
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The protagonist runs away from its home and, in its quest to find shelter, they realise they're also harming.

And making people running away from them.

Dang you really inspired me to try to use vocals in whatever song I make next. I love how you seamlessly blend them into the overall mix. And the harmony is really nice! Great job :)

Great menu theme. That consistent hum makes it somewhat menacing. Very immersive.  I love these voices in The Call. Paint a vivid picture.  The section where someone says "just run" is creative and unexpected, but I think it takes some of the magic away that was there throughout. Very well composed overall. Thanks for sharing!

Love the sound choices, especially the eeriness in the end of the first track. And then the vocals in the second track were brilliant! Nice textures. I feel like the end of the second track could do with some bass elements though! I love that part, but it sounds a little thin. Great OST overall, rich atmosphere.

Developer

Hi and thank you for your feedback! A friend who has some audio engineer background said the same about the second track and bass, I guess I'll have to go back there and see what I can rearrange :)

So thanks for it!

I feel that the music tells us a story and we can imagine the images we could put in it. The voice gives a folk/exotic atmosphere and so the music sounds really like a Rhapsody and it's really cool!

Beau travail !

Developer

Thank you for the kind words!! I'm glad you could picture what was happening with the overall sounds and music, I tried to compose it with some light storyboard in my head :)

Donc merci à toi pour ton commentaire !

I really enjoy the magical ambience and the vocals in your tracks,  and I like that you're using the adaptive music approach too! Great work!

Developer

Thank you for your comment! I guess I was inspired by the adaptive approach but I could have dug further the idea! Maybe for next time!

The call was so amazing !!!!! Literal goose bumps while listening it. It's so great on surround system AND even on normal sound systems !!

Developer

Goosebumps? That's the ultimate achievement! I have no professionnal background in audio mixing/mastering, so thanks for this comment!

I really enjoyed this submission - I'm a huge fan of your world building, and the fact that your tracks grow and evolve! Great voice as well!

Developer

Thanks for this! I wanted to make a very light worldbuilding here but composed the two tracks with some "storyboard" in mind, glad that you enjoyed it :D

Good sounding tracks, particularly impressed with the voice/background humming in the second track (which is always a bold move, but you carried it off great) which gives it a human/relatable touch. Nice work.

Hi and thanks for this feedback! Glad that the voices didn't felt "off", first time mixing and recording voices like this so I'm glad!

i liked how the music told the story. really into the first track :)

Developer

Hi, thanks for this! I tried to make the first track with a basic "storyboard" in mind, glad that it worked :)
