Description
'For years you have remained unnoticed, keeping your powers hidden from your family, your friends, your village. But now you have a child, and you can no longer hide, so you must run.

In 'Runaway' you explore a vast wilderness, finding food, visiting towns, staying alive, with the choice to hide you and your child's incredible elemental abilities at the risk of being discovered and hunted, or to use them to bring destruction and become a monster.'

Inspired by sci-fi books such as The Fifth Season, games such as Loop Hero, Hyper Light Drifter, Hollow Knight and the Mother series, and the music of Pink Floyd, Lena Raine, Mike Oldfield and Ryuchi Sakamoto, 'Runaway' combines chiptune sounds with prog rock grandeur and thick synth textures.

I loved making this.

'Runaway (Main Theme)' is the title theme for the game.

'Hunted' is for the moments of danger and escape.

'Almost Like Home' is closer to something resembling an overworld theme, but it's also meant to be for 'safe' moments, when there is no danger.

'Hunter' is for when the player decides to use their abilities for destruction.

Message from the artist:
I loved making this one. I challenged myself to use instruments I wouldn't normally use for this kind of project (my electric guitar being the main example) and I'm so happy with how it's turned out.

Theme:

Runaway
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
I really loved the picture theme and I latched onto the fact the person in the image is carrying a child. I wanted to explore the idea of being cast out and having to survive while also having the ability to be powerful.

Really enjoyed this, especially the sound profile. Feel like the chiptune instruments you chose added a nice texture (grit, fuzz, whatever you want to call it) to the tracks. You struck an overall great balance between all the game's different moods. Nice work!

Developer

Thank you! I do tend to go a bit overboard with texture sometimes!

I really like the mood of the different music and how the theme is reworked to give a completely different feel and atmosphere. I especially liked the retro - rock style in the Runaway Main Theme!

Developer

Thank you! The main theme was a lot of fun to make, channeling all my Dad Rock energy!

You have me entirely intrigued with your list of musical influences - that's one impressive list.  From the outset, I was enamoured with the sound of the opening track, "Runaway (Main Theme)" and can see the influences you mentioned working together. I really liked the recurring motifs which you were able to keep fresh throughout. A fantastic listen and I admire your skills in putting this together!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! It is a bit of a weird list now you mention it, I'm glad you can hear them in the tracks.

This was a bit of a departure from what I normally make so I'm really happy that you like it!

Oh man fantastic slow build in the main theme, really love when the guitar comes in with the melody, and as others have said its a really catchy hook you have throughout the whole soundtrack here. It's absolutely beautiful in all the various contexts, but especially so for me when it's sad and sweet in "Almost Like Home". Got me all emotional. So great job :')

Developer

Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun with the guitar parts

You have successfully made a quality soundtrack based on a simple motif. In order to do that, I think it’s really important to have a really good motif, and this one is catchy, simple, versatile, and instantly recognizable- all of the core characteristics that a good motif needs. I also like the octave motif you used throughout and think that having it speed up in Hunter is a great example of its versatility. It also gives the song some urgency, though when juxtaposed with the slowed main motif, I think the combination shows that power is energizing, but at a cost perhaps. Really great work overall and I would definitely enjoy playing this game. Thank you for sharing!

Developer

Thank you! I'm really glad it works, I tend to throw motifs around and I'm always a little worried about it becoming repetitive. You absolutely nailed the vibe I was going for with Hunter, I have no skill in making games (yet) but I'm glad you'd enjoy playing this one, as weird as that sounds!

The atmosphere you've created is wonderful, the waves of nostalgia I felt when listening are immense. Your synth design is amazing! Your movement of drums felt cohesive and yet different for every track!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I've been very fortunate to get my hands on a couple of hardware synths in the past year or so and it's completely changed my process. The bass parts are a Moog Grandmother and the leads are from a Korg Minilogue XD.

I'm so glad you liked the drums! I always feel like my drum parts are the weakest part of my tracks, so thank you for saying that they worked.

Good use of leitmotif! My favorite use of it would be Hunted. Sounds powerful yet calm at the same time.

Developer

Yes, I'm all about the leitmotifs! If anything I overuse them!

You have a great motif hat is used very well throughout. Almost like home sort of gives me a similar feeling as the Darkwood morning theme (though it’s been a while since I’ve played that game so don’t quote me on that). I really like the tone of the tracks! I think my favorites are Hunted and Hunter. I like how Hunter feels remorseful as if to remind the player/listener that destruction is not good. Great job!

Developer(+1)

I haven't thought about Darkwood in years! I'll need to go back to it sometime. I'm so glad you enjoyed the soundtrack, you absolutely got what I was going for with Hunter, thank you!

Nice pads in the background... The guitar lines are really beautiful too.

Nice job! Congratulations! 😁

Developer(+1)

Thank you! It's been a while since I've properly used my electric guitar and I really enjoyed writing with it.

I love the atmosphere in all tracks. Also guitars was really amazing) Great use of that motif melody! Great job

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I had so much fun with the guitar parts!

Lol since you were also inspired by Lena Raine, it sounds like its a soundtrack that can come from Minecraft. Great OST! There's peaceful ones and "epic" ones that correspond with ur story of the imaginary game.

Developer

Yes! I came to Lena Raine through Celeste and her work just continues to inspire me. I'm really pleased with the mix of different moods with this soundtrack, thank you for listening to it!

Wow, Hunter goes hard! I loved the electric guitar! Great job on all the songs!

Developer

Thank you! My previous entries to OSTCompJam have been really ambient and chill and I really wanted to get away from that this time around.
