  • Clever game with a nice take on the theme. Making it clearer to the player that what they are doing is working would be a nice improvement, as well as maybe a system to get through completed maps faster on retry.

Cobra Effect is a Singleplayer, “Turncoat Tower Defense” Game, based on the cobra effect, spreading across the world.

Inspiration:
The Cobra Effect refers to a situation where an attempted solution to a problem actually makes the problem worse. This term is derived from an anecdote about British colonial rule in India. The British government, concerned about the number of venomous cobras in Delhi, offered a bounty for every dead cobra. Initially, this was a successful strategy as large numbers of snakes were killed for the reward. However, it eventually led to some people breeding cobras for income. When the government became aware of this, the reward program was scrapped, causing the cobra breeders to release the now-worthless snakes. As a result, the wild cobra population increased even more than before, making the problem worse than it was at the outset.

Player Experience:
The player is thrown into a room with a plague of rats in it and has to solve the problem by choosing one of the options from the user interface. All options are new "prolutions" (combined wording for problem & solution). Prolutions are solutions to previous problems, which then become bigger problems. With each prolution, the player dives deeper into the Cobra Effect. Making the wrong decisions can have dramatic consequences.

Platform:
The game is developed to be released on HTML5.

Development Software
Unity (v. 2022.3.17f1) as Game Engine
Aseprite for pixel art
LMMS for all music and SFX

I, for one, welcome our new dragon overlords. I REALLY enjoyed this game, it is a wonderful take on the theme and a very fun puzzle experience. I don't really have much feedback. Very well done, I hope you expand this idea further, great work!

Nice lil game. I struggled getting past the eagles i just get swamped at some point and can't seem to get control back. I spammed those cats so hard....lol

There is always a good and a bad choice. But every outcome has a different ending Story :)

Thanks for your feedback and playing Our game :)

I absolutely LOVED this game! I won't lie, it frustrated me at first, but I kept on trying and when I finally figured it out and got to the end I really just thought it was ingenious and all I could do was laugh at myself for how long it took me. I especially love the music, how frantic and chaotic it is and how it slots into your core gameplay mechanic. I found myself panicking and pressing the wrong button so many times it would make your head spin. The sprites are awesome, the game is great :)

Thank you so much for your feedback and playing our game! :)
As the developer on our team, I smiled when you said that you captured the chaotic feeling I wanted to deliver in many aspects of this game, and that it reached you as intended :D

Really liked the concept and it's well-executed! The music pacing increasing as the chaos increased was a nice touch that added to the sense of urgency! Well done!

I think this game very engaging, and I would continue playing it, but at the initial stages, it's necessary to figure out the characteristics of each animal. Every time you advance to the next level, you have to face a death. Furthermore, I'm a bit unclear about the significance of the presence of cats and seagulls.

Developer

We have included 14 different endings. You can win with each animal/unit and the outcome is different. You have to make the right choices to get to the higher levels. The game is designed to be played several times and requires some patience to reach the final stage. We hope you enjoyed it anyway :) Thanks you for playing our game!

Interesting take on the tower defense genre. I also enjoyed the simplistic controls and how well everything was optimized. Definitely looks like y'all had lots of fun with this! Cheers

Really enjoy the concept to the theme, but admitly the game felt really unbalanced.

Here are the notes I jotted down:

  • Level 2 is a nightmare, the seagulls get so large in mass against the birds that adding fox/cats is impossible and they just kill anything placed
  • Use of abilities to destroy species would be nice
  • Kind of hard to grasp what is happening and such. I assume the goal is to keep the UI thing always empty, but I've done that only for an animal to win out and then be in a dooms day spiral of not being able to do anything.
  • The "press any key", but it not working until after X time is very annoying

It's a very nice concept, and I especially like using real-life scenarios with the theme.

Hey! Thanks for your feedback :D

The balance is well tested, you have to make the right decisions to get to the next levels. Different choices lead to different stories in the end. We implemented 14 different endings to this game, which means you could figure out many different approaches :) To get past level 2 you have to make the right decisions. Not every unit will solve your problem/plague from the stage before ;)

The chaos meter in the top left corner should not be filled, otherwise you're game over.
