  • GDD Great GDD, with loads of details about the game and its development process. If I had not read it beforehand, I would think the point multiplier was the goal and that there was a way to win the game. A timeline also would be appreciated, and more images of the assets, since they are so high quality. Gameplay We work and work some more to get rewarded with more work. Interesting concept, someone in a perpetual loop of work. I enjoyed running around to collect stuff. A few things were a bit confusing for me. Like I mentioned before, the scoring system was a bit confusing. This can be cleared by adding the phrase Resources values over the points section. The drill was only useful to dig some ore, which only gives 3 points. Trees could just be picked, and the ground needed the punch; that also affected everything else. I think it would be good to give more utility to the drill; after I got the hang of the game, I rarely used it. It was more efficient running around looking for the 25-point blocks. Art Amazing art; I can see that it's the strong point of the game. It's very detailed and polished, to the point that the lack of animation didn't feel like a big detriment. The 2D art is top-notch. Everything developed a great atmosphere. Sound design I loved the BGM; it was so punchy. Great for timed and fast-paced games like this. The punching and drilling sounded great. Last thoughts You leaned on your strengths, and that was a great decision. While the programming/gameplay is pretty simple, the art and sound design elevated the experience a lot. Simple with good care is really good. There's plenty of room for further development after the jam; you can add upgrades and more maps and explore your creativity for the new biomes. And you are a better programmer now than you were last month. Creativity is a muscle that we need to flex. Great job

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Frostpoint Toll is a top-down action where you collect resources in the afterlife.

It was mostly inspired by my favorite part of sandbox games, collecting items. I am a graphic designer/video editor, and a VERY bad programmer, so I put an emphasis on animations and good sound design but unfortunately, my controls and optimization because of this are very bad.

The graphics are vector art (which again is usually used by designers and not artists) and the flavor is a mix of dark fantasy/sci-fi where I wanted to explore a faith where past villains and heroes have to repent.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Is mostly through narrative/fantasy. You are a past "hero" who is familiar with destruction. A weapon of war that is used now as a weapon of harvest. You control the mecha, but obviously, the combat skills are all yours.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
I know that optimization and controls are not top-notch, so my main feedback request is the question if you had fun despite them and whether this concept is good enough for a fully fledged game.

The concept could be good, but I had too many issues. There wasn't any lag, but I got some 3k materials, and enough little icons for each category, but it said I didn't collect enough. I don't see anything in the GDD explaining it. The visuals were nice though. The 2.5D look is hard to make feel right.

Developer

Not sure what exactly is hard about 2.5D. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe I don't see the style that hard to recreate.

And I am sorry for the confusion. I've updated the GDD with mistakes and explanations.  Besides controls, the game actually works as intended, but it does not communicate the goal properly and creates frustration that can be easily fixed.

Love the art style but a bit hard to play with the current controls

Sometimes we just get too ambitious and run out of time 😹. I knew about the control problems from week one, but even after the jam ended, I was not 100% sure how to properly fix them. Coding is not my main field.

No worries :)

Very appealing. Gameplay is a bit lacking . Basically you just move around.

Developer

I guess my affinity shines through and trough 😅🤣

I don't feel like a weapon. I feel like a miner. Also it lagged like crazy on me, and I basically couldn't play. Outside of not fitting the theme, it seems like a neat game that just won't run properly in the browser.

After the updates, and installing chromium, the game isn't lagging anymore. Still feel more like a miner, even after getting the story blurb that I used to be a great hero.
