Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous.

  • GDD: GDD seems somewhere good. Good with the images in the game mechanics section, but I recommend using your own gifs/images from your game that give context to GDD. Not Mass flux images. Perhaps showcase more art in the art section. Like the UI and your thoughts on the pixel art design. Good to add a development timeline. It would showcase transparency of the game's state and progress. It gives so much value to the GDD. Game: I think the main menu seems fine. Could be funny if the UI in the main menu actually gets thrown out as an animation. Nice to see settings, but think it could be improved with accessibilities settings and perhaps some gameplay settings, which would probably require a page than the current function. I feel like the drag and click are slow to react. Sometimes the drag works or the click is too slow. I think the game concept would be more clever if it was in a puzzle genre with no enemies or time rush. But it is also interesting that it is in this kind of genre too! The art looks great and I think the game itself needs much more art & UI to look complete, but so far all pieces of the pixel art look well together.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
You throw your UI to kill enemies and defend the Debug Core in a pixel art style! Use your mouse to fling UI objects in an increasingly difficult 10 wave defense!

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Usually, the UI is only ever seen or acknowledged by the living human controlling the player character. This means that using the UI as the main weapon is something that only the living human behind the screen can do, not someone in-world. A living person must act to be the weapon.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
This was my first time doing actual music or attempting to do pixel art. Any feedback is appreciated!

Great job on completing the jam! It's an interesting idea!

I wish that there were more UI elements and different elements did different things. I found it was easiest to use the elements to make a blockade and then drop the health on them when there were too many. I found that you could click the already placed elements to let out a burst of damage, but it was difficult to keep up with for a long time. I didn't really feel like flinging the UI did too much.

For the art you did a good job with representing the different types of enemies and how they looked like bugs. I feel like more color could've been used to help with the setting - for example the background - instead of having a solid color could've used different shades of blue to give a cyber appearance. I liked that the different bugs had different silhouettes!

Finally for the music and SFX I think that it matched the style you wanted as mentioned in the GDD. You could've used more SFX when you picked up a UI element or rammed it into an enemy to make it feel more impactful.

Developer

Thank you for the incredibly detailed feedback! I want to make it more engaging to play in the future, but I was sadly unable to achieve that goal. Thanks again!

Really neat idea. I would love to know how you did it. Are they actually ui elements? Or are they just game elements that look like ui elements?

As for the core gameplay loop, it unfortunately was not very engaging. And I found the throwing mechanic exceedingly unwieldy and cumbersome.

I think this idea might almost be better suited to some kind of puzzle game. Check out the game "Void Stranger", and the creative ways it finds to let you interact with UI.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I wish I could have made it feel better to play, and I'll check that out. I'll be posting a video in a week or 2 explaining how I did it (just depends on how much time I have). Thanks for playing!

Super fun idea! Very enjoyable to throw the UI around and fight with it. Nice job!

Developer

Thanks!

Submitted

Very creative! It reminded me of Deadpool using his healthbar in one of his supers in MvC3.

Developer

I just googled that, and you're totally right! Thanks for playing!

A very silly little game! I like the idea and it was fun to play. My only feedback would be that I wish I could throw the words from the pop-ups, like the core health or stages waves moving forward, and that the UI didn't feel so "heavy"

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! I've seen other people express the same opinion on the heaviness of the objects and I hope to fix it post-jam! Those other ideas are great, and I'll add them as ideas for future updates. Thanks again!  :D

Throwing the ui around to attack enemies is fun, but it was hard to figure out how to attack at first. Maybe there's another way but all I've figured out so far is that you have to drop the ui on the enemies which isn't really as fun as swinging it around like nun chucks. I'm sure that programming a way to damage the enemies by flicking would be pretty tough though. The game is still good though!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! If I had more time, I likely could have made the attacking a bit better. Glad you had fun!

This is an interesting approach to the topic at hand. I enjoyed the music and the minimalist approach to the sprites. My biggest problem was that I was struggling to understand how to actually hurt things at first. Many pieces of the UI became very hard to pick up after I tossed them the first time. Additionally, I thought I was suppose to throw the pieces at enemies but I had much more success just dropping them on enemies instead.

All in all, this was a fun little game. I hope you learned a lot in this game jam!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I did learn many things (30 UI objects is not fun to manage lol)

Concept was fun, and after the pain of setting up my UI, I enjoy the meta humor of this. Good work!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you liked it  :D

This is a very nice idea for a game, I like it quite a lot! Although quite a bunch of room for improvement, I do see a lot of potential too. I think the game would be much better if there were lots of stuff you could throw or play around with, it can also have special effects for each different UIs (such as what you did with the life bar, that was brilliant!) Anyway, good job on making this incredible game! Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks for the kind words and feedback! I can't wait to expand it!

Submitted

i honestly enjoyed the concept and i think it has a lot of potential but the enemies kind of get stuck on the ui really easily and there was a weird unresponsiveness when you try and move the same piece of ui again. But i think it was a novel idea

Developer

I get it. Thanks for playing!

Creative idea to throw the UI elements. I thought it was really unique.

Developer

Thanks!

Great job! Concept is really unique.
Pixel art is simple, bright, and fun. Only possible suggestion to really "level up" it would be to try to style your enemies to different exception types. Also, background could need some texture, if you're moving away from the core.
Music is a nice chiptune banger, after a while I started to feel like I've been plunging  into a deeper madness though. If you're planning to update it, play with the music more and add like two more.
Overall solid job with them on your first time!

Also, managed to beat the game after an hour of different strategies. Feels like I've cheesed it... More UI elements on later stages is a must

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I hope to update post-jam. I'm glad you enjoyed the music, and I hope to make it better in the future! Thank you!

Awesome concept for a game! Personally managed to get to round 7 twice before getting overwhelmed. If you are planning to add more UI things that can be dragged and used perhaps try the Core hp remaining and round/wave number text that moves up and fades away, they could be like a quick time grab thing. Good job!

Developer

I thought about adding those, but the 2am sleep demons were demanding my return lol. Thanks for playing!

Submitted

Okay this was a really cool idea! I think what this game needs is more UI, SFX and maybe some upgrades or different abilities for each UI. Also it was a little bit hard for me to throw the UI predictably. Maybe it could make damage when it's flying too? Anyways great job!

Developer

Fair points. I hope to update this in the future! Thank you for the feedback and playing!

This is a really cool concept. I loved the added strategy of being able to use your UI pieces as barricades and the health bar to blow stuff up was awesome. Great job this is very cool!

Developer

Thanks! The barricading was an almost last-minute addition, but I think it made the game better. Thanks for playing!

Submitted

This is a really interesting concept. I was able to take the elements and block the enemies from the core btw.Creating a little wall around it! Then I was able to take chunks of health and blow up the enemies. Nice job! I think it's really clever. Wish there was some SFX indicating when I was hurting the enemies. I also like the music!

Clever game. Well done!

Developer

Thank you! The unique concept is the only reason I participated lol. I'm glad you like it! (I did run out of time for sfx tho. Hope to update later!)

Submitted

I think it's less of flinging objects and more of placing them so they intersect with them.  Unless I'm doing it wrong.  I tried throwing it but it didn't do anything but when I tried to squish them like bugs with the UI that worked for me

Developer

You make a fair point. Post-jam I plan on flushing out the game a little more (like the tutorial). Thanks for playing!

Submitted

The only thing i can say is that there needs to be more UI elements to fight with.
And maybe that the different elements do different stuff.

Its a good solid foundation, well done.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I was hoping to add more UI, but game jam timelines. Thank you for the feedback!

Submitted

Such a creative idea, I don't think I've seen anything like it! It was really funny that everything kept updating even though it was strewn all over the place. The foundation you've made here is super solid, sells the concept well and hints at plenty of ways it could be built upon. I think the music and pixel art were super serviceable, I don't think I could have made anything anywhere near as good on a first run! I can see you've talked to a bunch of other commenters about various balancing tweaks - I don't think there's anything else left to say on that front really, just "Great work, this was fun to play!"

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! This was my first time making actual art and music on my own (usually assets or a friend) and I'm so glad to hear that it turned out well. Thank you!!!

Submitted

Very cool idea! Love the way you can just use your  UI to defend yourself! Sometimes clicking on an element trying to drag it didn't work - would love it would be a bit faster/snappier at times to rearrange the elements provided. Or even throwing with velocity could add a nice touch. Very cool concept! Keep it up :)

Developer

Thanks! I wish I had time to tune it in lol. Glad you like it :D
