  • Rankurus fits the theme exceptionally well. As an alien bound to a never-stopping vehicle—composed of flesh, bones, metal, and other substances—you are the weapon, but not the driver. Figuring out how to influence the car through shooting, sometimes by directing fire and other times by using the excessive force of a rocket launcher, was both engaging and satisfying. Keeping the killing spree going became a fun challenge to master. The sound design was fantastic, from the music to the gun sounds and explosions, all the way to the gibberish of the enemy drivers (which I absolutely enjoyed). The post-apocalyptic artistic style had a strong Mad Max vibe that fit the game perfectly, and the UI was crisp and conveyed all necessary information effectively. The addition of a settings menu to adjust volume was a godsend. Unfortunately, I encountered performance issues such as stuttering and crashes while playing in both Firefox and Chrome. Overall, this was an excellent jam submission and a solid game in general. I would personally love to see ways to upgrade the character, such as increasing fire rate or damage. I hope you continue expanding it with more features and levels!

Summarise your game!
In a post apocalyptic world a strange morphing creature was captured and stuck to a car to fight in a chaotic arena for a spectacle of explosions, gore and adrenaline.
Rankurus is an action arena game where the player controls a mounted gun installed on a buggy, the weapon’s shooting influences the car’s movement and the player must balance shooting the hoards of incoming enemies while steering in a perilous arena.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
You are the weapon - Our theme interpretation for this jam was a car with a mounted weapon. The player, not being in control of the car and exclusively controlling the weapon object, can influence the car’s driving by shooting the weapon, for example shooting at an perpendicular angular would make the car steer in the same direction of the mounted gun. The car could then have access to other weapons in order to offer the player more control of the driving and avoid the control being frustrating and maintain a good driving experience. With these mechanics the game’s main challenge to be the correct reading of the current environment in order to select the most appropriate weapon to keep driving the car smoothly and to do it so while being pressured by incoming enemies

Physics of the car felt pretty nice, but was also pretty hard to control.  Your game's cover art is pretty sick lol. Good job overall!

Thanks for the review!

It's a cool concept.  It was just a little laggy for me

Thanks for your review, unfortunately our project ended up not being very smooth on browser. We included a windows binary build that should run much better. We invite you to try it.

Very good idea and theme interpretation. The firethrower didn't showed visuals for me, and game lacks polish overall. It was very fun nevertheless.

Developer

Thanks for the comment! Hm that´s a shame the flamethrower didn´t show visuals, that is a weird bug we never had so we don´t know what could have been that caused it. And yes, polish is still to be addded as we plan to continue developing the game. Thanks for playing, glad you had fun!

I really loved the art and concept! The game was a lot of fun, and I’ve never played one with this type of controller before—it made the experience even more enjoyable.

Really interesting concept, there is a lot of potential here. Art looks really good. Gameplay is promising i think with a little more polish/juiciness it would probably feel amazing. As a minor nit-pick i think 5 weapons at the same time is maybe to much, it could benefit from having a system that allows to swap weapons like, picking a new one drops the one you have equipped (so if the player remembers where a specific weapon was dropped, and they need that specific weapon with urgency, they could go back, while being chased, etc) . Of course this would need a bigger scope from the one of the jam, so is more of a funny idea than a real critic.
Nevertheless, the game is really cool and complete, and you should be proud, congrats!

Developer

Thanks for your comment! We are glad you liked it and good suggestion! After this jam we will probably continue to develop the game because we really liked making it, so we will deal with some issues and continue to polish everything. Aprecciate your review!

fun and hard, love the concept, love the mobs and how the game looks, like how driving is smooth but hard to control at the same time

to improve imo:

- getting heals is too hard  -> most frustrating part of the game

- structures should not be more punishing than enemies

- grapling hook could be more useful (catch heals, catch boosts for example)

- survided time in minutes

- custom weapon order/customisable keybinds for weapons

- metam lps mano

Developer

Thanks for the review! Good suggestions, we will work on those moving on. (Juro que vamos meter lps mano)

This was sick! Criminally underrated and I'm shocked that you have no comments!

I really enjoyed:

  1. The accessibility options like UI size etc. Games need more of this.
  2. The music instantly got me in the mood to wreak havoc.
  3. The drift VFX look really great.
  4. The concept behind the movement mechanics is really neat and interesting. I love how different weapons pushes you around differently, that's such a cool idea. Future idea could have you moving closer to the cursor when you shoot, like a magnetic gun or something.
  5. The UI was really in theme and looks fantastic.

Possible improvements (nitpicks):

  • Enemies could've swamped me a lot more. I sat there for a while as I wrote this review, and my cruiser is still alive. It feels like I should've been swamped by now.
  • It's a little too easy to get stuck on geometry. Most obstacles get blown up when you shoot them which is good, but I got stuck on a few which didn't which kind of grinds the action to a halt.

The game gave huge mad max vibes and was heaps of fun. You guys should throw it on the app store and monetise it for sure!

Thank you for your review, we loved hearing your feedback! As with any jam project we had to tone down the scope of the project to make it to the deadline but we are really proud of this one. Good luck on the jam!
