probably my most favorite art game so far! but i've only played 15% of the games so far lol and the gunplay was super solid! sad this isn't finished

Developer

thanks. Yeah, I'll get a finished version of this done in the next couple months, I've got some fun ideas for it!

I liked the art and the game setting. Seems like it could be really cool if completed.

I could not seem to keep x and z straight for the life of me (its a good thing I could not die haha). It would be cool to have the option to reverse them or maybe make 'up' jump. Also, I was not sure what the superpower was?  It did not seem to work for me.

Yeah, thanks. I'd definitely have put button swapping into the menu if i'd gotten round to completing it. I'll probly put some work into it in the next couple months to finish it off. You need enemies on the screen for the power to work, it's a bit ropey though.

Great gunplay in this game, was fun to play around with! I think the control scheme is a little unintuitive for me personally, I kept mixing up Z and X, but still enjoyable!

Developer

Cheers. Yeah, I'll deffo put a button swap in when I finish it!

Looking at the thumbnail I didn't think this was going to be a pico-8 game. You really managed to create e unique look with the restricted palette. It almost got some zx spectrum vibes, and I'm all for it!
Having to duck behind rocks and watch out for cacti coming up from behind kept the gameplay really engaging. The special move is also a great addition.

I think the theme wasn't super clear, I guess the player is dealing out the penalties, but would be cool to maybe have that play a bigger role in the gameplay.

Definitely want to play the full game, the UI is hinting at some collectables or dialogs happening which really peaks my interest.

Thanks alot! Yeah theres alot of ideas I had for this, I was planning on maybe having different time periods with Knight/Gangster/Space with a boss on each and yeah some collectibles of some sort. Also the Special power would have been different for each level. Obviously alot for a week jam but I'll finish it off in the next few months though

The sprites look gorgeous. The pico-8 has such a distinctive color palette that a lot of games wind up looking similar to one another. I'm so impressed with the way you picked colors to create such a moody and distinct atmosphere.

The "hang 'em high" power-up adds a ton of flavor to the combat. It feels like a fighting game finishing move. I appreciated that some of the enemies took cover behind obstacles like real-life desperados.

Thanks alot. Yeah, I had a rule to only use the brightest colours in the palette and to use less intuitive ones.

I like the charming retro aesthetic of the game, you use the limited palette well. Sometimes it was a bit hard to distinguish enemies from the background, if there were overlapping colors, usually with the cactus.

I suggest making the cactus slower when it approaches you from behind, so the player has a bit more time to react if they're in the middle of shooting.

Unfortunately I didn't get past the first level, it was like the game froze after opening the door?

Feels like an old school PC game, love the minimalistic pixel art and the action level design !

It was fun but just a heads up that there is a bug if you use the special with no enemies present. I couldn't advance a couple times because I tend to be a bit overzealous when pressing buttons and would hit the special when no enemies are visible. Visually for a PICO-8 game it looks great!

Maybe I didn't get far enough but I do have trouble visualizing where the jam theme comes into play.

While it's pretty clear the game is unfinished, it looks polished and I like the concept!
