Concept is great, love the layout a bit to green but still enjoyable

Developer

Thank you for playing my game.

Damn this one of the more interesting tactical turn-based shooters i've seen on itch. Its  XCOM meets plants vs. zombies (minus the zombies). Definitely a marketable game if its polished and expanded upon!

Developer

Thank you very much!

I loved the concept of the game, gave me plants vs zombies vibes xD. I feel like you can work on making the game have just a bit more things to do, felt like I was just moving the guys back and fourth but was still fun! Well done!

Thank you very much!

I'm impressed that you managed to put all these systems together in such a short timeframe. And especially that you managed to do so with multiple levels,  and an introduction.

My only criticism is that the game struggles to speak to the theme.

Developer

Thank you. When I am inspired I forget about the time and a supportive family helps a lot with drinks and snacks. I thought about the gardens in South Africa where we have garden services or where the house owner has to clean his or her garden by themselves. I imagined what if something were to happen like a biochemical spill. How would a group of teenagers from a small town clean it up then?

I'm not quite sure of how this fits to the theme. In my life gardening is violence, to be sure, but I haven't had to shoot anything. (Yet.) This definitely seems harder.

I liked that I knew exactly how to play, immediately. There was nothing confusing about the controls or the UI. I did have a period in the Brown garden where one of my team was just skipped by the game for a few turns. I wasn't given the option to use him after the first few turns - it just cycled right past and then after a while suddenly he was working again.

As you have noted the enemy AI could do with some work but if it had been any better I don't know that I would have won without more tactical options for the player. As others have mentioned even low percentage shots tended to hit most of the time so I also wasn't sure that the number was accurate.

I know you really like entering jams - and presumably therefore doing new things - but I'd like to see you work on this some more. I think it has potential. Practice working on the AI, add more gardens that allow for different kinds of strategic movement, that sort of thing.

My apologies about the glitches, I hope it was still fun to play?  I do love to try different things out when I enter jams and this game was totally something new for me. Thank you for playing it.

Really neat XCOM game!

As it's just a jam there's not much depth to taking cover, AI etc. The AI will seemingly just shoot the closest unit, so you can just rotate through them. The percentages on the shots seem a bit off, maybe there's a bug (haha) where it's inverted or something.

Well done on cobbling together all the different assets in a short time.

Based on sticking to the theme I have to give it 2/5 bees, since it seems to have made cleaning your garden harder than normal ;)

The intro with the story was very cool, and I liked the aesthetic feel of the game. I also love tactical combat games, so it was quite fun, though I'd have liked to have seen some more options for tactical decisions (e.g. as someone else noted, having a cover system where I can hold cover without removing my ability to shoot would have been nice).

I don't know if I was just lucky, but it didn't feel like the chance to hit percentages were accurate. I eventually got to the point where I took any shot that wasn't 0%, and hit most of the time, even on 5% hits. So the strategy very quickly became bundling up my guys and focusing down anyone coming into range. (Interestingly, it made the "first" level with only three enemies harder, since I only had two guys.)

Anyway, a cool game!

It's amazing what you managed to get done in such a short amount of time, and by yourself! Not just that, but everything works really well. I also enjoy the turn-based nature of the game, feels like there is more room for strategising. Excellent! :D

Developer

Thank you very much. I must say  when it was load shedding I used the time to sleep. 😁

Wow this is amazing! By far the best UI in the Jam so far alongside Hacked//off, everything was super responsive and easy to understand. Just a clean and fun game! I really appreciate the small and well presented story.

The only thing I would have liked to see would be better enemy AI, it would have made some of the levels more challenging for sure. Some enemies would stand and defend at the back of the garden and let me pick them off.  Using cover was also kind of obnoxious as I didn't have enough movement to peak, shoot, and take cover in the same turn (or maybe I'm just not getting it.)

Here's a standoff I had 1v1 vs a very dense sunflower.

Lol, enemy AI are always my weakest point. Thank you, the compliments make me feel good and make me feel game development is worthwhile. Happy that you enjoyed the game.

Love the twist on plants versus zombies really was fun. kinda wish esc want to exit the game but exit a menu choice.
really enjoyed it

Developer

Thank you for playing my game. Glad you enjoyed it. I did create an escape for each battle scene, by clicking the "esc" button  on your keyboard it takes you to the main menu where you can quit the game. :)
