I had an unhealthy relationship with this game.
As an expert trumpeter myself, I knew my skills on the trumpet would easily translate to this game. And indeed it did, I was quickly gaining points, 20, 40, 41!!!
Then I hit a brick wall. My main flaw on the trumpet had came back to haunt me: stamina. My fingers were getting tired. I was getting panicked. And then my scores started to dwindle. I clearly was no longer on top form. Maybe I wasn't the best trumpeter in the world?! Maybe I had unrealistic expectations about myself and my ability.
After time, I realised that it wasn't about the score. It was about the doots we make along the way. And so I persevered, until I finally matched the dev high score at 49. At that, I was happy to hang up my trumpet and ride into the sunset.
Maybe there is no "best trumpeter". Maybe it's just about trying your best and improving each day.
Thank you for helping me face my insecurities and find peace with myself. 🎺
Wow this was short, simple and really sweet!
It took me a couple seconds to figure out what was going on, though that was mostly because I didn't click in the window properly at first.
I like the visuals and sound effects, and the gameplay itself despite only having 3 inputs and not even really an enemy is surprisingly engaging.
I also like how the health bar is the trumpet keys being pressed down!
I only ever managed a high score of 10 so I'm not that good at it, but I really don't have many notes. A high score leaderboard as someone else mentioned might be nice, but it doesn't feel sorely lacking without one.
This was nice, great work!
Surprisingly deep gameplay for such a simple game, and a great graphical and audio style for this jam. I do wish it was just a hair less janky; having to refresh the game to restart is annoying. A high score system would be nice, but not necessary.
I've added a proper way to reset, idk why I didn't think of doing it in the first place
simple but impressive. My highest score is 5... womp womp...
Congrats on this being your first game jam!! Hope you had a fun time! :)
2024's game of the year contender right here
