Worried for Alice...
Haven't played any of those panel of pons before, but have experience with similar games and was able to get by without any losses (postjam version!!). Fun gameplay and funny dialogue, the ending was pretty cute.
Never played Panel De Pon. For me that gameplay nostalgia is linked to Pokemon Puzzle League on N64. Still getting the nostalgia bonus points though. Good game.
The battles/"dates" are quite fast paced and the story is quite short so it was over a bit too quick tbh.
Would have been funny to battle/date Cirno. But also funny the way it played out.
Though can we get some medical help for Alice? That art just looked horrible xD
Very fun puzzle game. I played it yesterday and I just had to play the story again today. Lunatic was too much for me, but the story mode difficulty was just fine.
Regarding the blocks, I agree with Fiore; I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I kind of feel that the icons are too big or the colors are too saturated, so the board looks a bit noisy, visually speaking. This is compounded when the blocks reach the top of the screen and they get crushed.
The UI is pretty neat. And great choice of music, I wouldn’t have guessed that the songs were from Nicovideo Commons. All of them fit the game very well.
I adore Panel De Pon, but this didn't click with me in nearly the same way. The new garbage blocks blend in with the other blocks visually and mechanically, really mess with the control you have over your board in an inconsistent and confusing way, and are extremely difficult to intentionally make chains out of for the kind of back-and-forth volleys of big attacks that I like to see. The other new mechanics didn't do much for me, either.
That's just me being a purist and wanting more of the original experience, though. It's fine to do your own thing rather than making a direct copy, and it's an otherwise generally solid game.
Besides that, there's just that the designs and colors on the blocks are a bit too noisy and hard to parse when quickly surveying the whole board at a brief glance, and the sound effects could've done a bit more to convey what was going on, I suppose?
Thanks for the response! Yeah, it's intentionally a very different experience, and the changes to how garbage works are, beyond just trying to shake stuff up, primarily to give a greater deal of interaction between them and the spell cards. And if you didn't vibe with those, I can definitely see the system not clicking, especially if you're VERY used to panel de pon.
As for the blocks being a bit noisy and especially the sound effects not conveying enough, thank you double! It's already got my brain moving on ways to improve things. We have some desire to return to this a month or so from now to generally polish it more and especially to add online play, and I'll be sure to keep that in mind.
I've played and finished the Jam version for now. Pretty well put together.
I hear from the other comments that it's heavily inspired by Panel De Pon, hm? Well hot damn, this game just kicked my ass thoroughly, from beginning to end. Except Aya for some reason.
Yukari's Spellcard is not something I expected at the very first stage lol.
I'm rather weak in Match-3 games so I spent more time on Yukari and Alice than I'd like to admit. I still reached the end through sheer luck and determination (mostly luck I guess), but damn that was hard for me.
Also I really like the build up to Marisa's battle. Along with the chosen arrange, this made the last battle feel addly magical hahah.
Thank you for playing!!!! Version 1.1a makes Yukari much less likely to body you with her spellcard, and the game gives you a tip on how to better manage the battle against Alice now. But yeah we overtuned it for the jam version oops (im pretty good at this sort of game oops!!)
This was so interesting! I've never played Panel de Pon, though I did have a Puyo Puyo phase one or two years ago, which is similar in some aspects (not that many to be honest, but I want to believe it helped). The most difficult level for me was the tutorial, but it may have been simply because I didn't know the game; once I beat that, I finally understood how the game worked and really enjoyed it!
If I have to be honest, I didn't pay much attention to the "favourite object" mechanic because I already found it difficult enough to line up any kind of same-colour blocks, but I really appreciate how well thought-out the game is.
The story was quite fun too! I liked the humour, especially the part where Cirno got ignored (poor creature). The artstyle was nice; the board, in particular, looked just like out of a '90s puzzle game! You even took time and effort to add game modes other than the main story, which is something that shouldn't be taken for granted! Overall it's a very fun and challenging game, it really feels complete!
I managed to beat lunatic mode! Fun little game, enjoyed every second of it. Alice on story mode though...
I only had one problem while playing, and that was UI overlaying and making me reset the game after I beat Alice. The UI for resetting would linger into the Marisa fight, causing me to have to restart. Not too bad of a bug with how condensed the stages are.
hhuuuuuuuuuhh I'll have to look into that bug I havent run into it myself thank you for letting me know and thank you for playing!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic little game right here! It's one of those kinda puzzle games that's got a really addicting feedback loop similar to Tetris. The idea is fun and incorporates some gay themes in there very well. Things are very pleasing to look at and the music is real fun too. My main complaint is how unbelievably brutal the AI can be. ESPECIALLY the third stage who seems to be sending ICBMs made of garbage whenever they fall asleep. Overall a really fun puzzle game that might need a bit of tweaking to make it super well done.
Had a blast! I love puzzle fighters, and this is a great one.
SO fun!! Alice was definitely a big challenge — I almost wonder if I just got lucky beating her? Lol. Panel de pon is very near and dear to my heart and seeing a panel de pon entry made stars shine in my eyes and blocks fall from the ceiling. Really fun!! Thanks for making it! The story is amazing too—hilarious and cute.
Looks like a nice game but I’m terrible at it, didn’t even manage to win the tutorial
Understandable; it was definitely possible to get overwhelmed at the start. We have now pushed an update that, among other things, should give people a lot more room to breathe in the beginning.
Thanks for your new version :)
The game is still quite hard (but I feel like I’m the only one in that case seeing the others comments) but at least I was able to see a bit deeper
I feel like I don’t get all the subtilities on how to play well but it’s still a great game
VERY GOOD! love the visuals & the music & the gameplay! ALICE IS TOO HARD FOR A CASUAL PLAYER THO DEVS PLS NERF ;~;
Thank you for playing! Yeahhhh, alice benefited more than anyone else from from some global spell cooldown card buffs we did shortly before release, bringing her charge from 30 panels down to 24. We do want her to be a wall, but the endurance match aspect of her story mode fight doesn't mesh well with how much more she can drop what is probably the strongest spell card in the game. Sorry about that!
It's been so long since Ive played pokemon puzzle league and it was really fun to see it appear again in a jam entry. I love the beat of the writing with how reimu bounces off the goofiness of everyone else and the twist reveal that no, this is actually just what dating is. The levels may have been a bit too hard since my friend couldnt get through to the end and I had to stream it, (the yukari spell card in the beginning basically removes you from play and instakills you if you arent already managing the board well by that point), but the game was a lot of fun and it's clear that a lot of time was put into making it. I may be a bit early in playing through the entries, but it's a banger of a jam game for sure
As a fan both of cute lesbians and of being out of my depth, Touhou Panel Date Pon is excellent. The story is funny and heartwarming at the same time, which is excellent for a lesbian love story. I loved the framing of the match-3 being in-universe dating with a fun callback at the end. I want Reimu and Marisa to be happy together so, so bad.
Gameplay-wise, it's Panel de Pon with spell cards. I've never played Panel de Pon or Touhou, so I got to come to this from the standpoint of a complete newcomer which is always nice, which meant I naturally gravitated toward story mode. Hoo boy. I was not prepared for Panel de Pon. Not one bit. I got stonewalled at the sleepy boss for almost 15 minutes, but yknow what? Even though I kept losing again and again despite not really knowing why, it was fun. The music's excellent, the sound effects are snappy, and the board's surprisingly readable. Ended up powering through in the end, and it was well worth it.
There's survival, versus, and Lunatic modes which definitely did not need to be included, but I can appreciate them even if they're not for me. Looking forward to seeing netplay tournaments for Panel Date Pon in my youtube recommendations soon.
Solid, solid game. Spell bombed my heart with its writing and I'm gonna be seeing falling panels every time I close my eyes. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
