This was an interesting game in that the characters were written in ways I would not or have not written them. That being said, them not being written like I would have done it does not mean the story is bad. Far from it. Kokoro's position of understanding the emotions of everyone around her makes sense after her journey during Touhou 13.5, and it's put to great use. I enjoyed the Seiran story the most, and found the emotional climax of it to be the most satisfying. I also appreciated the eclectic taste of the music room. I never expected to hear a remix of Koakuma's theme from Fantastic Danmaku Festival, so that was a nice surprise. There were a lot of sleeper song picks as well, such as Magician's Melancholy.
Oh also memory match kicked my ass
Truly a fantastical game. Even I who's not much into VNs fully got into the game.
- Appreciating A LOT the item persistence. This QoL option saved me.
The mini-games are simple but still fun.
- Simply amazing visual style, rather polished.
- They have a whole music room! The arranges are exquisite, and no beat missed. Also, fully voice acted?? awesome! My favourite is Mystia's slight German accent. (It is intended to be German accent, right?)
- Loving the story/minigame integration!
Beautiful stories, and the characters are pretty well written. They almost feel real.
//SPOILER//
- One critic I'd say is that. Why does Koishi appear after specifically getting all the 3 other key items? How is Kokoro going around the festival relevant towards whether Koishi is there or not? That point was highlighted to me by AngryCrow in the Gamedev Discord, where they kept trying to find Koishi bits after getting the true ending - poor fellow was confused.
//SPOILER END//All in all it's pretty impressive. Kudos to the team.My favourite part was when the fishing line became Dhalsim from Streets™ (dunno why but the boat kept drifting to the left when time ran out, and the line did the best rubber band impression I've ever seen):
Ahhh such a cute and impressive game. I think my favourite route was Seiran’s - when it clicked that she was aro/ace was a nice moment, and then seeing her continue to wrestle with it internally was cool. In general the LGBTQ+ themes are in the forefront, but the way each character handles it is actually very natural and leaves plenty to read into.
The art, music and voice acting were all really well done.
I liked the minigames. It really adds to the summer festival vibe, though what really cemented the vibe was the day/night cycle progression and the hex grid. It was a great way to give a time/space grounding to the events. Actually, thinking of the minigames, it was a really sensible way to add some difficulty to the game, rather than making the VN paths harder to follow. I had to give the whack-a-mole a couple tries haha.
If there’s anything I wished was better, I think more characterisation for Yui would’ve been good. Sumireko’s story was mostly about self-confidence so in a way it didn’t really matter to us what Yui is like, but I think I’d’ve rooted for Sumi more if I knew what Yui was like.
Still, overall a really solid jam game!
Alright time for commenting.
In the first place - it was done in unity???!!! It looks so good as if it was ren'py or something. I loved all the UI and the images were pretty good.
In second - I enjoyed the voice acting (espiecially Mystia's one) good job!
There might have been some bugs with item slots, but very solid work + the mere concept of fishing game inside a vn is so good I wonder why I haven't thought about this.
Also it was pretty smart to make Kokoro the MC. Thanks.
An impressively fully developed VN right here. A completely voice acted for a game jam is a real surprise, and Haru's VA stood out with a great performance. An impressive array of music tracks assist with setting the mood well. A huge amount of CGs are packed in here and drive in the emotional moments. The minigames fit the festival theme and offer a good change of pace. However, all were pretty easy. The writing hit the themes well, though a bit simple for the depth of the issues presented. It is really great seeing more aro representation in the jam, especially a take very different from the one I presented.
I am joining the club of not quite understanding the Koishi ending. I am also unsure if there is more content to be seen by replaying with the items gained. I tried it for a bit and they seemed to just shortcut to the ending?
This game is cool. The game starts off with a very interesting concept! It allows for a lot of interesting stories and it's not too hard to see that the team really did use this concept well!
The stories all follow a path that has some sort of different relation to the LGBTQ community, from my understanding, Seiren follows an aroace story, Sumireko with a sapphic story, and Haru has a trans story. While I don't fall under any of these monikers (could be trans I never know) I believe that all of these representations are quite great and are accurate to the lgbtq themes. I can relate to almost every story even if I don't fall under those identities, and I think the game excels at that.
Also I would like to give an applause to the artist. The art is phenomenal and brings so much life towards the stories. The art style is unique and I always find myself falling in love with the art, sometimes it could be a character model or a major piece of the plot. It can be a bit idiosyncratic at times but overall it is quite good!
The story at times can be wonky though. It's overall solid and while having a lot of basic storylines that are predictable; although it also adds things to it that help it be more unique than the average vn. I don't really understand the relationship development between Koishi and Kokoro. They kind of just kiss at the end and I'm befuddled. Why? Apart from that, I don't have any major issues with the story that aren't nitpicks that are too nitpicky for a game jam game lol. Like the Haru story it's not too developed about the relationship between Haru and Kaguya, but it's not too important for a relatively short game.
The gaming sections are also quite fun! Whack a Fumo is just fun to mess around with, the fishing game is also fun, and the card game brings a difficult but fun challenge to the overall easy games. My only gripe is that the Reisen game is way too easy even for the relative easiness of all the regular games, it's kind of just there.
Also the voice acting is cool! I did not expect a game jam vn to include the voices for characters! Although it unfortunately is awkward at times. All of the voices fit the characters, but the voice acting is not perfect. I did enjoy the inclusion of the voices however, I usually skip dialogue immediately once I read it, but the acting made me want to listen to it throughout and allowed me to think more of the dialogue rather than just skipping through.
Overall, this game is a great addition to the game jam! It changes some things about the VN aspect and also creates an awesome experience through-and-through! I can tell that a lot of effort and joy was put into this game! I hope to see more from every person involved with this game! Best of wishes to everyone here. Hopefully this post doesn't come off as me being a prick lol
For the Reisen game, originally, we made the "fake" Reisen really hard to see (less blurry and almost the same color). But because of time, we had no way to test if people could see the difference so we made it really obvious. We did lessen each time you had before she resummon them though. Originally it was way longer like 6 seconds before she splits again.
Woah, this has some crazy production value. Like, where do I start?
There's so many CGs here! They're all well-drawn, and do a great job of accenting the scenes they show up on. Really, I love how most of them do a "show don't tell" job, rather than them just like visually showing something the narration is describing. The regular sprite art is great too. And also, zamn, full voice acting ain't something I'd expect out of a jam game. They were all really fun to listen to, and even though it ain't perfect all the time, the more awkward linereads and such were more charming than anything. I think Sumireko and Mystia are my favorites to listen to. Just so goofy and fun. Haru does a great job as well. The minigames are really nice-- pretty impressive that ya got so much going on here, and they're all really responsive and fun for what they are. I think whack-a-fumo was my favorite, just cuz of silly twitchy-gamer brain.
SPOILERY STORY TALK
Sumireko's story was pretty cute. I quite like storylines that kinda bridge the gap between Gensokyo and the Outside World, even if only a little. Haru's story was nice and had a pretty cool way of integrating magicstuff, but the blushy kiss at the end kinda felt kinda weird to me, both because I'm not a huge fan of the "thank you for helping me out *gives you a little kiss as a reward*" trope thingy, and cuz I kinda assumed she was like, 11. I mean Touhou ages are nebulous as all hell, and the story doesn't dwell on that moment too hard, so I don't care that much. And though I quite liked Seiran's story, I think the tearful monologue towards the end may have went on for a couple lines too long. That little bait-and-switch ending was neat, though.
While I find the "Use of LGBTQ+ themes" here to be pretty on-the-nose and unsubtle, that's not a bad thing. If anything, it's pretty refreshing to have such a variety of stories where everyone's nice and ends up happy by the end.
Maybe I missed something, but what's with Koishi appearing right at the end and doing the kissykiss? Either I missed something really important early on or that whole thing should've had a bit more foreshadowing. Also, I'm not sure if the New Game Plus type feature gives you extra content-- I'd assume it does, but I went through the game a second time with the new items and nothing new happened, it seemed.
SPOILERY END
Apologies if my feedback is poor, or sounds overly harsh-- there's a lot more I could say, but it might require a second read-through, and it's a bit late for me. I quite liked this game, though.
In short, it's like a summer festival-- lovingly put together, full of variety, colour, and warmth, all combined to sweep you off your feet and let you forget your troubles for a little while.
