Why is a youkai being assaulted by sweets? :thonk:

It's a really cool crossover, definitely leaning on the harder side. I'm possibly too prideful so I decided to try clearing at least until Stage 20 with only the default settings - 2 lives and 3 bombs. And then I decided it's too hard yet possible so I gave up. (and no I will never play it without the default settings).

It's also really cool to get a Genesis-styled arrangement of UM's extra stage themes! The sprites are good too, especially the bosses, they look appetizing.

Here's my best attempt. I died on the Stage 20 boss ;-;

(pictured: me being a tiny bit bad)

absolute props for the usage of newhu and the th18 extra stage track. have had to listen to it quite a bit while goin after no miss runs and this is the first arrange i have heard (it is good)

the genesis emulator or whatever you have goin on here works pretty awesomely, a tiny bit of interpolation but the pixels still look nice

would be nice to distinguish more between bombs and lives and also the seihou thing can happen where you reverse deathbomb by dying and using a bomb only to lose not only the life but the bomb on the next life

rad danmakugame as always

edit: unrelated to game but i just saw the pic on the game page with you standin next to it runnin on actual hardware with the gamer posters n stuff on the wall. cool as hell

I can't seem to beat it, even pass the first boss, but I like what I am seeing here. It had really good visuals and soundtracks. Danmaku with a mix of centipede is very interesting indeed. also kudos to you being able to make this playable on a sega genesis.

I am absolutely abysmal at this game, but it's fun nonetheless

Absolutely stellar presentation and it’s always a delight to see a game made for a retro console. I absolutely suck at playing bullet hells with a gamepad so lemme see if I’ll get a better score when I play with my keyboard.

One of my favorite games this jam. Everything about the core gameplay feels just right, both levels and bosses. Only thing I found a bit lacking is how the gumdrops don't damage Momoyo on touch, since this removes part of the threat of having the drops low on the screen (a low mine will still be a dangerous, though, if you don't manage to end the level before it detonates).

Since the game is close to perfect in my eyes,  I'm gonna drop some nitpicky suggestions/opinions:

  • I think the game would have even more appeal if the scoring system was a bit better. Clearing levels faster should definitely give more score, but you could also add in some bonuses from grazing (maybe also award it for "grazing"/shotgunning the gumdrops) to make it more Touhou-flavored.
  • It's cool that we have both bombs and lives, but maybe reset the bombs upon death? This is not really for balance reasons, but it's just that as the game is now, the bombs practically act like extra lives that don't eat your no-miss bonus, which is a bit unsatisfying.
  • The game still doesn't seem to clear up variables properly at game over? I'm running the rom bundled with the linux emulator. The dream would be if it could save the hi score without save states, but just resetting properly would at least let me save my score with a save state, rather than just a screenshot.

My current best is reaching level 19 with default lives and bombs. I aim to clear all 20 stages before the jam is over, and maybe update my review based on the stage 20 boss and any potential 2nd loop.

All in all, excellent game. Starry Mountain of Tenma sounds amazing, too. It really makes me hype.

wow thanks so much for the kind words! i probably won't be doing any more work on this but everything you mentioned i completely agree with. second loop was actually in the cards originally but wasn't able to get it designed in time.

saving high score is something i tried to figure out in time but wasn't getting it. the genesis is so weird.

219,510 was my score. Really fun (and clever) gameloop with a banging remix
