Hey, this is actually intentional but thanks for letting me know anyway! I made it so there is a small chance for a cluster of "live" cells to appear in a random location every now and then, which I think is what's happening in your case. This definitely isn't the default behaviour for Game of Life, though I suppose I wanted to make it so that it wouldn't just end up in a state where the whole thing grinds to a halt and never does anything again!

Hello,

I sell sound libraries on itch and I'm considering creating a "tiered" bundle of my libraries.

My current plan is to create a single itch project which contains all of my libraries. I would have the lowest "tier" as the minimum price for the project (eg $10). I'd then set the files for the sound libraries that I want to not be available in the lowest tier to a higher price using the "set a different price for this file" feature, (eg $30). There are two things I'm unsure about here.

1 - What happens if I give someone a key for the project? Will they be able to access everything as though they've paid the price of the highest tier, or will it only unlock the "lowest tier" files?

2 - How would this work with putting things on sale? If for example I was to make a 50% off sale, would this mean that someone could pay $15 and access the highest tier's items, or would they still need to pay the full $30?

Thanks,
Matt

Hey, thanks for posting about this. It is good to see the site's security being taken seriously, though I do have some issues with how this change affects the aesthetic of project pages.

I primarily use itch to sell sound libraries, and I have found that pages can look quite nice if I have a large YouTube embed with the sound library's trailer that takes up the width of the page. Now I feel that my pages look quite bare, because the "click to activate YouTube" video is comparatively small and is left-aligned. I also feel it's a bit less "idiot-proof" (for lack of a better term 😉) to hear an example of my sound libraries.

Is there any possibility for any websites to be "whitelisted", so they appear as before without needing to be enabled? I don't claim to understand the technical aspects of it, but I would imagine that iframes from YouTube or SoundCloud for example would be safe. And from what I can tell, it does appear that the "activate" box is aware that the iframe is a YouTube video and already displays it differently to the generic "activate" box. Perhaps trusted websites like these could be displayed as before?

And another thought that may or may not be possible - could the new "click to activate" boxes be made to match the size of the original iframe? This would minimise the effect the new system has on page layout.

I see, thanks for the insight!

It seems that there isn't a system that does exactly what I'd like to do, so I'll have to give this some more thought.

Hello,

I have a question about how updates work with paid products. For context, I sell sound libraries, and this is what my question refers to.

If a user purchases a product which includes multiple files, will they be able to download additional files I add to that product without needing to pay any more money?

The reason I ask is because I currently use the sale/bundle system to sell a bundle of all of my sound libraries but I feel I could benefit from selling the bundle as a product instead (as I expect this would show up more easily in browse, and I could display it on my profile, etc). However, I am a bit reluctant to do this if it means that users will have access to all future sound libraries I make, as this could devalue my future sound libraries.

Thanks,
Matt

Hello!

I have some thoughts on some ways that Itch's browsing features could be improved to make it easier to find game assets. This is an area that I feel could be improved.

For example, let's say I need footstep sounds for a game I'm making.

My first thought would be to type "footsteps sfx" into the search bar. This brings up a lot of results, but there seems to be no option to sort or filter the results. I might for example want to sort by price to find affordable packs, or I might want to include only paid assets, but this doesn't seem to be possible. I might even find games or visual assets if my search term isn't specific enough.

Alternatively, I might instead click "Browse", then select "Game Assets", and then click "Sound Effects" on the left. In this area there are a couple of features not seen in the search area, such as filtering and sorting, which is good. However, there seems to be no way to search for a specific term in the "Browse" section. As a result it could be difficult to find what I'm after if I need something specific. For example if I needed "Footsteps on Asphalt" sounds, this would be challenging to find without being able to type the keyword "Asphalt".

As a result, it seems that it isn't possible to both search for a specific keyword and also filter/sort the results. To me it seems that the best solution would be for the search area (the area appearing when you use the main search bar) to have additional sorting and filtering features such as those that are present in the "browse" area. This would mean you could easily make very precise searches, which could be beneficial to both asset creators and customers in need of assets.

Thanks,
Matt

I am indeed ;)

Nice job! Sounds like it could be on Mario Land 2 or something

Nice, "Toll" is probably my favourite!

Thanks!

If it helps, I started out using Famitracker for chiptune and learned primarily from these tutorials: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLW08UHPY2AEoWhZJVfaE4tUF9jpso8KI0. A lot of the basics are similar between different tracker programs, so I found this info useful in Deflemask, which is what I now use for chiptune (mainly because it supports Sega Genesis sound). Or you might prefer more modern software that isn't tracker-based, which is probably a different story!

This is intentional, but thanks for pointing it out nonetheless! I've updated the description to mention that

Thanks! And nice job on your own game of life :)

It wasn't too complex!

Each row has a short unique sound associated with it (some have a percussive sound like a kick drum and some have a musical note or chord). Each time there is a new generation, the game scans a particular column and triggers one of the sounds for each row that has a live cell in it. Each generation, the column being scanned moves to the right.

That's difficult to explain in text! It might help to imagine a vertical line moving right that plays a note every time it hits a live cell.

Hey, thanks!

There's some contact info on my website (https://www.mattjhart.co.uk/), I'm interested to see what you've recorded if you send me message by email or Discord!

As for how I made it, it was entirely made in Deflemask, which is what I use for chiptune stuff nowadays (I use it mostly because it lets you use Mega Drive sounds). So I just inputted all the notes in that and it lets you export it as a .gb ROM file. I'm not aware if there's currently a way to export music from Deflemask in a way that can be used in GBstudio to allow me to make a more customised ROM, hence why my ROM is visually very simple!

Hey, thanks for letting me know! I've updated the page to label it as "CC-BY-SA-4.0". Is this appropriate? And is that all I'd need to do?

Awesome job! It's great to see a demake of probably my favourite game of all time!

Damn, awesome job! You're really abusing that sound chip ;)

I don't currently plan to, but we'll see! I guess I meant to make one song that had a bunch of different styles instead

Very cute!

Thanks, will look into this!

Hey!

I'm about ready to submit a music cartridge ROM and I have a couple questions.

What constitutes it being open source? I have created the ROM solely using Deflemask and I'll include the Deflemask project with the submission on itch - would this count as open source? There is no actual code that I have created for the ROM.

Also, my ROM has an error to it, but it doesn't occur in all circumstances. When opening the ROM in BGB, I get the error message:

"ROM checksum fails. Rom size in header does not match actual rom size. A real gameboy wouldn't care."

It plays correctly in BGB, but in Virtual Boy the song cuts off after about 15 seconds. Is this likely to be an issue with the judging? I assume the error is caused by the Deflemask export process. If anyone happens to know a fix, I'm all ears!

Hey, sorry for the late reply! I'm still available and would be happy to collaborate if there is a suitable programmer willing to work on a game

Sure, I'm down! Feel free to add me on discord, I'm   MattJH#4743

Hey! If you haven't got someone already I'd be keen to help out with music/SFX.   Here are some examples:

Let me know if you'd like to collaborate!

Great, thanks!

Hey! I'd like to check a couple things:

Am I correct in thinking that a music entry would solely be judged on how it sounds?  So it wouldn't need to be aesthetically pleasing for example?

And also would I be able to submit my own entry but also join a team? Any solo effort I would do would be a music ROM but it could be nice to join a game project too if possible.

Thanks for hosting this, I'm eager to take part!

We have the members we need for our team now, sorry!

Thanks for the offer but we've got a full team now, sorry!

I'd be up for that! Just saw your sound design demo reel which is pretty impressive!    I just sent a discord request to   eazed#8200   which I guess is you?  eazed#820 didn't give me any results :D

Hey! I'm looking for a team to join, and I can provide music and/or SFX. I'm in BST timezone in England.

There are some examples of my music and sound design on my YT:

Ideally I'd like to work with people with a bit of experience and above 18 years old if possible. Get in touch!

Hey, I'd be interested in joining you if you haven't found someone already! I'm a composer and a sound designer, there are some examples on my YouTube:   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC32vkklZsxG_vM4dY71KEpA

Nice job! Some nice level design here, especially on the last level. My only issue is that I didn't immediately get the hang of which button would move in each direction, but I got used it fairly quickly after that!

Nice job! It's impressive that you got a unique puzzle game like this done in such a short time :D

Hey, let me know if you need a musician or sound designer!
