everywhere i go on this website i see gay games. now don't get me wrong , many of these games have fantastic stories but there is way too much gayness in this website . is their a reason for it ? i don't see this much gayness on steam . is this becoz steam is heavily censored while itch is rarely censored due to which this website has become a haven/refugee camp for gay (lgbt) creators ?

See this recent topic. To summarize: there are almost 580K games on itch.io right now, of which almost 3800 with the LGBT tag. That's 0.6%. I wonder how come you see them everywhere.

(+3)

many of them are not even tagged as lgbt , most have  multiple romantic intrests in which you can be straight/gay as per your preference.

So by your logic, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is gay? Or for that matter 90% of big-name CRPGS made this century?

(+4)

well i haven't played any assassin's creed games but yes they are gay , also the main reason i found from the thread you mentioned was that there are a dozen of different tags for gay games , not just the lgbt tag.

Have you actually tried? There's also "LGBTQIA", with 1K games, "queer" with less than that, and "gay" with 1500.

sorry dude but there are games which can be said that they are gay (not specifically gay focused) games.

for example https://mona-mae.itch.io/crown-of-exile

Moderator(+1)

Sorry, dude, but it looks to me like you're twisting the definition of what makes a game "gay" to complain about barely-there representation.

(+4)

i dunno bro , most romantic visual novels i have seen are gay furry novels which is annoying same with a lot of the nsfw games .

Dunno where you've been looking. I'd like to find more of those and keep running into otome instead.

There's a difference between a game having homosexual themes and a game where same-sex relationships are an option.

With the former, the point of being gay is a main feature in terms of the game's themes. The LGBT stuff is there to tell... whatever it is the game is trying to say (I wouldn't know, since most of the games/stories I've seen all did the same story beats, so I expect nothing special for them). There's a bit of a gray area with this where some people will have same-sex relationships and not think them prominent enough to warrant tagging, treating it like a "them being gay doesn't matter" thing, but I wouldn't say one thing or the other without having any numbers...

With the latter, the entire point falls back into customization. By allowing the player character to romance NPCs of either gender, it allows for more customization options. If the player has the option to pick their gender at the start of the game (or doesn't specify), these relationship options exist regardless. Sure, it's not realistic for, like, 70% of the population of a town in some farming sim to be gay (and I'm not going to pull that whole "bUt rEaLiSm dOeSnT mAtTeR iN fAntAsY" shit or any similar argument since that's a stupid handwave), but there's not really a reason to restrict content that barely affects gameplay (usually marriage options are just cosmetics), so it's best to just not draw too much attention to any differentiations.

Itch.io tries to show you what you want to see.

well many of them do have straight romance options and the story is quite nice so i guess i am the gay XD

Well then it does a horrible job at it

This is the funniest thread I have seen in a while.

Come into my website, play my gay games, call me gay! lol

(+2)

You don't have enough lgbtqia+ content.

Can I call you good boy? (sorry, I love the dachsunds. They are adorable)

Thanks. Mimi was the best girl in the world. May she rest in peace.

We should have an indie game website just for studios named after pets. But I'm going to delete my account here as soon as my latest payout clears, too many of these juvenile anti-gay postings popping up recently (at this rate, the question will be why is this website so anti-gay?).

(+1)

I hope you will reconsider.  I get ditching the forums because of this frequent foolishness being allowed, but your creator page is your space.  If you have made up your mind though, where will you take your content?

(1 edit) (+1)

Right now I just have some stuff on github (and use github pages as my website), and my revenue, what there is of it, is mostly from Steam and the App Store, anyway. Still, it's nice to have a central spot to throw up whatever you can create, big or small or experimental. I have a grand vision of creating a portfolio site where you can show off whatever you have and link to those you've collaborated with (kind of like LinkedIn but project-based, not company-based), but after some early pathetic PHP attempts I just went with GameJolt and then later Itch.io.

Please don't go. Ignore them; they are only a loud, juvenile, bored minority with too much time and nothing to do. Stay and continue making good games! Are cuervos considered pets? Would like to join the club.

(+1)

Cuervos are ravens? Maybe not great as pets.

But you could say the same for cats. They're more like roommates.

So true. Thank you for the link!

Apologies for my lack of action. Didn't want to punish people for being misguided.

Not your fault, I know you're volunteering your time! (a moderator's work is never done...)

Don't go man, this forum is just a little fraction of the whole site, and I found this site very welcoming and open, I love this community. Ignore this kind of posts, or just laugh at them. Or better, if they get out of line, report them.

(+1)

bruh what anti-gay statement did i make ?

(+2)

I don't know to what extend this website is "gay" . For research purposes, I ran the nsfw tag in a search on this website to see what the results would be. The default results didn't appear to appeal specifically to an LGBT audience, though I didn't investigate it any further. The only think LGBT adjacent I saw at the top of the page, was that a developer had the word "Sissy" in their name but, that's about it. So in all fairness, I won't say that this site is "gay".

(+5)

You don't have to be gay to play and enjoy games with gay characters, protagonists or plotlines. I'm not a psychic space marine but I enjoy System Shock 2. I am not a blob of mucus but I had fun in World of Goo.  I play games for fun, stories, new experiences. If I had to play myself all the time (like in real life) I'd soon get bored. My stats are rubbish, and I'd be playing a game where I spend most of my time staring at a screen. :-)

(+1)

actually i do like these games coz they have a nice and sweet stories but its kinda weird to have so many games which have mostly gay themes.

(1 edit) (+2)

Well, heres the thing about that, I could complain that something is too straight and stuff. There is a reason for such existing, because gay people exist just like straight people do. There is gay stuff because people want to be represented, and some are tired of the larger amount of heterosexual type games. Gay, bisexual, trans, all that representation is because those people exist. And like straight people, some want to be able to feel represented in something like a show or game. Not sure what I am saying makes much sense, but basically, it's because representation matters.

Edit: Basically, those themes exist as for representation, although there's quite a lot of gay games, I suggest comparing the number of straight games there are compared to gay, bi or trans, or LGBTQ themed ones entirely.

This comment is so tumblr it hurts...

i simply dont have time to care about any of this

this

XD i clicked cuz thought you were saying this website sucked

(+1)

Actually, this is how i feel about creepy horror games on this website. why is there always at least 80% horror games on the front page?.. like the other dude said, it may be that you wanna see your gay games, but i dont wanna see these horror thumbnails cuz i will sometimes preview them and poop my pants

Moderator(+1)

Because they're popular? At least there are 26K games with the Horror tag, that's almost 5% of those on itch.io, a noticeable percentage.

All this shows what people are desperate for. What's sorely missing in the mainstream. We should all be listening instead of complaining.

you are actually right
