Love the visuals and the effects. Audio style fits quite well with the visual theme. I also like that everything is accessible through keyboard.

Ok, this is an amazing game! The animations are well done and fluid. The sound design is pretty good. As Akzidenz said, the rounds are pretty brutal and it feels like the game makes good use of the time constraint. I liked that when you block one attack you receive chip damage. It adds a little to the urgency.

The IA is kinda strange though. In some rounds it just avoids all your attacks and kill you mercilessly; in others you can keep spamming Hook and the IA just keep getting hit. I did it in 3 consecutive rounds :P

Thank you for playing and the feedback, Ninus! I'm still working on the AI, it was the last thing I worked on, trying to catch the jam deadline. It also was my first attempt at AI, I'll try to make some improvements for sure.

yeah, AIs are quite hard to get right. And I guess AIs in fighting games are specially difficult to balance out.

Developer

i updated the AI, made it more competitive but also human like. AI also now blocks instead of just always trying to duck punches. If you have the time, let me know what you think. I also added leaderboards.

It sure looks more natural now. I had no round where I could just span Hook and get away with it this time XD

Again, great job with this game :3

Glad to hear it! Thanks for the inputs, helped make the game better. Cheers!

Brilliant and very highly accomplished. It looks great, sounds good and plays very well. It fits very nicely into the 20 second constraint because the rounds are naturally brutal and short without feeling like they're being cut down to fit the time limit.

Maybe adding music for the start and end of each round and something playing in the background while you navigate menus would give it a touch more of a GB vibe? Not that it really feels like it's lacking.

Aside from that, the game is pretty near perfect. Great work.

Thank you for the kind words and feedback! I was worried 20 seconds might be too short for a fighting game but decided to try anyway. Pretty satisfied with how it came out.

Agreed on the music! I was suppose to collaborate with some people who reached out from the jam discord channel, but they got swamped with work so I had to do without music. Maybe when they find the time, I can update it. Or maybe I'll pretend I'm a musician and try to come up with something.

I pretend to be a musician when I make games so I’m sure you can too. Best of luck!

This looks great! have you tried using GB Studio to make an actual game boy game? It is surprisingly accessible, although you may be disappointed about its graphical capacity.  I used it to make this: Microidvania by juzek (itch.io)

Developer

Thanks! I did look at GBstudio for a sec, I thought I could use it for this project, but sprite limitations made it seem impossible for this concept. I still intend to use it for another project, I'd love to create a game that actually runs on the hardware.

For your game, Microidvania, are the on screen controls part of GBstudio outputs or did you make them manually?

I was surprised when I uploaded the HTML version that they showed up all by themselves. Part of GB Studio. I got to check the little "mobile friendly" box!

I really wish the creator of GB Studio would make a GBA Studio, cause that is hands down my favorite system. I still play mine regularly

Developer

Ooh. That's an awesome feature. When I first thought of creating a gb inspired game, I considered adding on screen controls. It's great that gb stuio comes with it out of the box.  As if the web export feature wasn't awesome enough already.

For gba, I think I remember reading that gbstudio support for it is unlikely, but who knows?

Wow, love both the pixel art and gameplay! Great out-of-the-box idea for gameplay!

Thank you! I was inspired by the Karate Fight game and watch handheld by casio and of course, street fighter.

Wow! Didn't know that existed, it had also 2 players in one handheld device!

Developer(+1)

yep! 2 player was amazing but I remember getting annoyed that the controls weren't mirrored.

that makes sense even if by not mirroring them they preserved the single player layout! Thanks for making me discover this goodness
