stylish game with great tension! the dynamics of shooting and reloading are just stellar, I especially like the moment of darkness after shooting a bullet before pulling it back. I read your reply below about the indecision around requiring one or two shots to kill enemies, and I have a suggestion: deal double damage when hitting the middle of the glowy part in their chest. this way, it would be possible to one-shot enemies with careful aim, though it would be tricky in tense situations.

I encountered a few issues, I’ll just list them:

  • max mouse sensitivity was a bit low for me, and it’d be nice to be able to adjust the settings without restarting the game.
  • the dash sometimes goes diagonally when I intend to dash in a cardinal direction, this happens if I dash right after changing movement direction.
  • trying to dash while walking down slopes doesn’t always work.
  • there’s definitely a checkpoint missing after the section with the round tables, before area where streetlights come out of the ground.
  • there’s no indication that enemies are immune to damage while coming out of the ground.
  • the hammer pull animation sometimes doesn’t play — it works, there’s just no animation. it seems to happen if I am mashing R and RMB after shooting, but it’s relatively rare.
  • the game closed after I met the red person sitting on the bed, I’m not sure if that was the intended ending or if the game crashed.

those are pretty minor issues, this game was really enjoyable and very well made!

Man this game, oof! What a great experience, one of my favorite games, the aesthetic, the story, the gameplay it was on point! The whole idea of having one bullet and having to charge it every time made the whole game really tense, and the atmosphere with the lighting and the growing street lamps, man that was some movie level stuff.

Overall this game was fantastic!

Notes:

This are just notes of things I thought could be better although I loved the game a lot!

-I think the power of the gun should have been even more intense like a one hit kill would have shown how strong it is and then make a boss level were one of the spirit men could take more hits, would have been interesting seeing it.

-The checkpoints were intense maybe add a few more so is not as difficult but i know to make save states can be difficult.

Overall great job!

thank you so much for your feedback, i’m really glad you liked it!

as for your notes: i agree, especially about the one-shot-kill thing. i was - and am to this point - unsure if a one-shot kill would make the enemies seem too harmless. i also agree about more checkpoints! i was absolutely planning to add more, but then time ran out and i couldn’t. T^T

again, thanks for your feedback and thanks for playing :)

I like the unique mechanic of being able to recall your bullet and only having one shot. I did find it clunky to control at times but I think that's intended with the "horror feel".

Either way, good job with your game and I hope more people check it out!

Developer

thanks for playing!

some of the clunkyness is indeed intended to achieve said horror feel, but i agree it goes overboard at times - it was challenging to design this in a way that still felt fun :v

stuck on linux, so can't actually give it a try, but I love the aesthetic in the screenshots! Is that some sort of custom shader effect for the grain?

Developer

thank you! yes, it’s mostly some noise maps being moved in a displacement UV and then simply mapped to base color. the shadergraph’s in the github if you want to check it out: https://github.com/sicles/AcerolaJam0/tree/main/Assets/Shaders/Transition

Cool game! I liked the atmosphere and graphics. Had a little problem with fights, had to retry a few times some areas

Developer

thanks! hope it wasn’t too frustrating (。﹏。*)
