I'm really happy with a scanner mechanic - I like visual effects and atmosphere it creates

Hi, I just finished playing your game and I can already say I love it. Its such a unique mechanic, and it works very well with the genre, you are always so scared of revealing what's there, but you are even more scared of wandering in the dark, so you just light it up. It works incredibly well, and I had shivers running all down my spine when I fell down, just terrifying. The atmosphere is really fitting, and all the assets are very well done and placed.

You did a crazy job here, you should really develop this idea further in the future, it's really really unique.

Again, amazing game and good luck with it, you deserve it all! <33333

haha thank you so much!! it means a lot haha
Yeah, I would like to make something bigger out of it😅 I have a few more ideas I wanted to implement but didn't have time for them.. Definitely gotta give them a try haha
Thanks again!!

Submitted(+1)

that was really cool !

on one hand im sad that its so short, on the other i feel saved, the horror aspect works very well haha

the mechanic makes me think of the one from an upcoming game named “été”, but Eté is a feel good colorful game so for me it was really interesting to see a similar mechanic used with a wildly different aesthethic

its awesome, well played :D

Developer(+1)

Thank you!! Oh, you are right! I've played Eté demo some time ago but I completely forgot about it haha, but it's really pretty
Speaking of mechanics, I think the one that was biggest inspiration for me was Catacombs of Solaris - it uses similar technique of rendering screen capture on 3D objects, except it's quite abstract and more experimental

the scanning mechanic is incredibly well made, such a unique way of rendering the world! it’s a perfect fit for a horror game like this. the ambient sounds help set the mood too. I’m in awe!

Developer

thank you!:)

I wish I had a good gpu. The game runs at around 1 fps on my laptop 😅. But the mechanic looks very cool. Like some other people, I got stuck after falling in the pipe. But I liked what I could see. Well done!

Developer

Ah, sorry about that! Didn't have time to properly optimize the game :')
I'll probably fix that right after jam results are announced
Thanks for playing tho!!

Developer

Hi! I have recently optimized the game, and since voting has ended I was finally able to upload new build on itch (FindIt_1.2). It should now run ~30fps (I hope?), in case you still wanna try it xD

Submitted(+1)

Nice! I've just tried the new update and the game runs very smoothly now!

Submitted

Amazing mechaninc! But is there a way to actually win this? I am getting stuck after falling out of the pipe.

Developer

Unfortunately no, there is only "bad" ending 😅 didn't have time to add more :')
Thanks for playing tho!!

Submitted

It's absolutely ok))just wanted to know if I should keep trying:)

Submitted

i mean what can i say, this mechanic is just mind boggling, i have absolutely no clue how to go about implementing something like this! it's honestly super enjoyable to just explore the world and fill it in as you go, every turned corner was a new surprise, it was a very enjoyable time.

Developer

thank you!! happy you liked the mechanic:)

Submitted

Wow. Awesome mechanic. Really well done!

Thank you!:)

Awesome mechanic. I ended up playing with it a lot and trying to imagine how you might have implemented it. Anyway, this is my favorite horror game submission so far. Nice job!

Developer(+1)

haha thank you!! Glad you like it:)

The scanning mechanic is so good wtf, I can't even imagine how you did it, it's so impressive, It stretches textures and warps everything in a weird yet convincing way, it's so cool

Developer(+1)

haha thanks!! happy you liked it:)

Love it, i got stuck sliding in the pipe toward the first creepy face but im definitively keeping it to play it again, that mechanic is just so good, it even justify low fps on my potato pc

Developer

Thank you! Yeah, pipe is little bugged :') It may happen when you stop for a little when you hear sliding sound; I believe if you try walk all the time, without stopping it should be fine?
Also sorry for low fps's! Didn't have time to properly optimize it 😅
Btw, what's your graphics card? Maybe I'll find sth similar to properly test game

Submitted

you mean you have a bug that reward having no fear? Dope.
i have a geforce 950M, dont worry lags are to be expected ^^

oooh neat, imma check it :D

Submitted(+1)

just played the updated version, conrats on the perf gain, it run quite smoothly ^^! the part past the pipe is a bit buggy (you can fall between the wall and the ground, and the part past the stairs seem to be missing) but whatever, its great, thanks for the update :D

oh also, i need your secret for concrete textures lol

Developer

thank you!
oh, you're right! I didn't notice this gap between wall and floor, thanks for letting me know!^^
haha, yeah, I didn't have enough time again to make sth cooler for the last part :') Btw, did you find the glowing white door there? (You might need to scan around after you fall from stairs)
maybe I'll be able to do sth more polished in the future lol

majority of the textures (and 3D assets) are from https://polyhaven.com/, very cool site! I think I also got some textures from https://3dtextures.me/

thanks for playing!!

Submitted(+1)

ooh thanks for the links :) yeah i found the door (and the jumscare x) ), was cool :)

Submitted

Very creepy! very cool idea! I don't know if I like that you can see through walls sometimes, and when you take a picture it show the walls, if feels a bit weird.... I don't know... but overall its pretty nice game! maybe in the future you can expand it into a very nice horror game!

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, I feel a little conflicted about those transparent walls - on one hand I liked the idea of seeing game progress, on the other a lot of people say it makes game less scary and/or buggy. Gotta think about it 😅

Submitted(+1)

The game definitely gave me goosebumps. Unfortunately, I am really bad and easily scared of horror games and movies, so I couldn't finish it. But I managed to get stuck in a ground pipe after I've encountered the "monster" 😅

Nonetheless, a very original idea, and great implementation, it definitely raises your anxiety levels =)))

Developer

Oh no, I thought I managed to fix that bug! 😅
Thanks for playing!!

It looks like this was inspired by games like Scanner Sombre, though projecting a whole-ass render onto an environment definitely seems unique. It would be neat to see a breakdown of the technology behind it.

Also it feels like the game suffers from the game jam plague of not completely realized vision - I imagine the “it” was intended to be projected onto the environment when you scan it, and then be gone when you re-scan the same spot - that would have made it more suspenseful I think.

Developer

Thanks! Yup, lidar games were main inspiration, but I still wanted to do something different, even if a little bit.
The truth is monster was supposed to be 3D in scan, but with some glitchy vertex shaders etc. so yeah, I lacked time to implement everything as I imagined lol
Thanks for playing and feedback!!
PS how did you feel about transparent backfaces of already scanned object, that lets you see environment you've already walked through?

PS how did you feel about transparent backfaces of already scanned object, that lets you see environment you’ve already walked through?

I wasn’t 100% sure how intentional they were, but it was cool to look back at previous sections, especially that fenced garden part

Submitted

wooooaaaahhhhh, the presentation of this game is so well done! the way the environment slowly renders out after each scan gives me so much anxiety. and the way that the environment gets rendered differently depending on the angle you scan at adds to the uncanny nature of this unsettling world you've created. looking back at parts of the world you revealed after walking around for while is really trippy and satisfying! the audio also helps elevate the overall atmosphere as well! great work!!!

Developer

haha thank you! glad you like it!!

Maybe I am to terrified to finish this, but I love the idea!
