Cool idea, and I enjoyed it at first, but I think it moves way too slow for its depth. Even at max fast-forward it was taking me forever to research things with 80+ people devoted to research, and there wasn't a ton to do while I was waiting.. The art is great though, too bad I spent most of the time super zoomed out so I couldn't appreciate it.

Thanks for the review!

It does not help that there are no tooltips to help, but the general idea is to radio in more survivors to be able to get the science done faster.

You’re right about having to wait for the science, even if you have more people. It’s just something I didn’t have time to play test enough and realise, while trying to balance everything else!

Saying that, the game was probably too big of a scope to have research/science in it as well, and be able to balance it properly.

This's really impressive for a jam entry, well done. Really appreciate there is a fast forward option, though that was running at 1 FPS in the end.

My main gripes would be that it's too long for a jam game, the UI is a bit awkward to use and tooltip/upgrade descriptions would go a long way.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback!

That ending was meant to only cure alive zombies but it brought back dead zombies too which is quite a lot to deal with lol.

Can't stop playing the game... Hope it can be further developed in the future and add more UI and guides

Developer

Good to hear it was addictive :)

I am looking to clean it up and finish some features that were planned, like more weapons, different zombie movements/actions, a few other science tasks.

Will post in the Bevy Discord #showcase when it's ready.

I played until my machine couldn't handle anymore. It's interesting what a time limited jam can do to a colony sim. Not all of the simplifications jived with me. But you ended up with a really polished experience, so that's great.

I really wanted better control over professions of my population, though I think I eventually got the hang of the system and learned to let go and be okay with it. I'm not usually a fan of heroes in RTS style games, as  they just seem to make every other unit relatively less interesting or powerful. But the way they are used here just to simplify combat feels pretty good to me! Actually selecting them felt a little awkward though.

I think the highest impact thing to add for me would be tooltips, especially for the upgrades. What does this do, and how long is it gonna take?

Am I right that there's no point in building more than one of each type of building?

Developer

Thanks for the detailed review!

I agree selecting heroes is a bit awkward. I didn't have time to fix it up unfortunately.

With "hero style", in hindsight I think it would have been better to be able to select soldiers (and heroes) directly using a drag selection. I will probably change this after the jam voting ends.

Tooltips! I absolutely realise that it is something players need. It was bugging me during the whole jam. It was the next thing to do before the final submission, but my brain at the time just wasn't ok with doing more UI code. :)

More than one stockpile is very useful to reduce the travel time between picking up resources and dropping them off. It increases your income much faster with less people.

More hospitals isn't that useful as there's usually a clear path between someone downed and the center of the map.

Laboratories can fit an infinite amount of scientists, so not useful in this jam release, but I did have a task to set a limit to the number of scientists per building, but ran out of time.

I zoomed in and realized the art was fantastic up close. What a nice little game. I have a hard time quitting it, how will my colony manage without me?

Developer

Thanks for the kind words!

Love to see the zombies fly around ! Great work !

I'm a bit lost - how do I move the heroes? Can I move them at all? Atm i start the game, allocate "jobs", my logistics run into the zombie horde and well.. From the description, I should move the heroes to chokepoints and crossways?

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Left click in the white circle. The circle glows when the hero is selected. Then right click somewhere on the map to move them there.

Go with what you think is right with the hero positioning, just move them in range of the zombies!

With non soldiers, just try to clear the area with 100% soldiers if the logistics are getting into zombie fights. Then when it's clear, change the %'s again.

Thank you! It worked. Such a nice idea! Now I am at the 1fps stage and I want to see the end - research is going to be so fast with nearly 1000 scientists :D

Developer

Hi! Thanks for checking out Outbreak!

There's a performance bug when using a lot of Logistics in the mid to late game. Usually you have enough resources by then so they don't need to stay at a high %.

Please let me know what you think. We're planning on making this a proper game in the future.
