Say something about your game if you wanna! :D
In a team of 3 people we made Le Chat Noir, a short first person thriller game with noir atmosphere of the 1960s in New York.

You play as Detective Casey who goes on to solve a case, but is instead met by his own horrible past regarding Detective Purrlock, his life long purrtner.

We hope you will enjoy this short experience that puts you inside a detective's worst nightmare, loosing a purrtner (be it a human or a cat). Also we are excited to hear all your feedback.

PS: Due to circumstances we only had 4 days to complete the whole experience, so there might be some bugs, hopefully nothing groudbreaking. We mainly focused on completing the game from start to finish and then went onto bug-fixing and polishing.

Thanks to everyone who gives it a try!

[ There are unfortunately some bugs (as always)! Nothing game breaking though, and some players might not even come across them. However, we intend to fix them as soon as the Jam is over. Also, it got to our attention that there is a problem with the speed of the cat on lower framerate. That is due to the cat being a constant speed while the overall game is slower. We also intend on reimplementing that feature and fixing it in the next build, after the Jam! ]

The noir vibe is so damn cool, I really loved it. The floating texts all around indicating the player's thoughts fit perfectly well. I definitely enjoyed this one. The cat chase was kinda funny ngl lol.

Developer

Thanks! We're glad you enjoyed the atmosphere, and that we managed to make it coherent and enjoyable, haha. Also thanks for pointing out the  texts, means a lot.

The noir vibe is so cool!

Very high quality throughout!

Developer

Thank you!

Perfectly nailed the noir vibe. That part definitely caught me by surprise, and the platforming afterwards was an interesting addition. I don't know if it was a stylistic choice or if my PC isn't strong enough to run it smoothly, but even with low FPS I enjoyed navigating the city. Good work, I'd like to see this updated!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! The low FPS wasn't a stylistic choice, we just haven't really had time to optimise :D. We'll definitely update the game in the future and optimise the game for lower end PCs!

In the settings menu there's a restart level option, aside from that the main menu looks gorgeous.
The game has stunning art and sound design.
The game crashed a lot for me.
I found a bug where if i run into the first person, the walking animation wouldn't stop and i could hear footsteps and the camera shaking.
You can pause with the ESC key but you can't unpause with the ESC key.
You forgot to tell the player that you have to interact with the E key in the game's page i think.
I think there should be more indications of where we have to go, i had trouble finding the spot to drink the whiskey.
The platforming section was tedious, the cat chasing you should have an animation i think, to make it more menacing.
Having to press control and shift to slide may be a little annoying.
When you die you respawn instantly and if you were going forward, it doesn't register the key press so i have to un press it and do it again to move.
I don't know if it's due to my slow frame rate but the cat was faster than me in the second level, it was imposible to win.

A shame i couldn't see this to completion but good job to your team regardless.

Thank you so much for the critical feedback!

We are aware of most of the bugs and intend on fixing them after the jam!

When it comes to the the cat, I am sorry that u were unable to finish the game... We didn't have time to test and go thoroughly through the implementation. Now that I think about it, the cat is a constant speed and the overall game is slower on low framerate, hence why it might be impossible, I am sorry, we will fix this after the jam and hopefully you'll give it a try again :)

Also thanks for letting us know about the missing control on our Itch.io page!

Finally got time to try it. Five stars, definitely a winner for me, nothing else to say. :)
A really solid game, I cannot believe it was done in 4 days, the art and sound design are amazing as well, awesome job!

Developer

I'm glad you got to try it, and thanks for your high praise! Appraisal of the sound design coming from you means a lot.

PS: We also still cannot believe we managed to pull it off in just 4 days, haha.

Superb presentation through-out! Personal favorite of the jam from all that I've played! Messaging the rest of my team to go try it out as we speak :)

Developer

Thank you so much :) Personally, I still gotta try yours, but I heard from my team that it's great!

Nice atmosphere! 🥸

Loved the shadowing.

These are some nice environment sounds my friend ☕, nice background music as well.

Developer

Thank you!

You've got a good game! I give you 5 stars! Could you rate mine too?

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Took a lot of effort and willpower.

Our team will rate your game as well!

Thanks! :D

So I could actually play it! It's amazing to put it short.
The game has first of all incredible visuals and sfx. One of the few games that achieves a real atmosphere. With interesting chars and environment. The game has even a good bunch environmental story telling which is already for it's own incredible.
A real master piece of the whole jam (and that in only 4 days instead of 6).
Thanks and well done!
Some suggestions:
small rework of the controlls (id u die and press arrow keys before you land than then you won't move)
a bit more story 0w0!
a bit longer platformer section

Thanks for the generous rating and also the feedback.

If people like the game, and if it has success during this game jam, we might spend some more time on it and make it bigger and better! I'd love the opportunity and time to expand the story.

Hi! I'm a linux user and wated too know if there is a possibility to play your game without windows. I already tried steam but it won't work :´(. Could you in the worst case make a linux / windows 32 bit/ html version after the jam? Would love to play the game!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Hey! Thank you for reaching out.

It took some time, as we use Unreal Engine and also 2 external middleware tools that needed fixing to make Linux build possible. But it seems I will be able to proceed now. Unfortunately I can't update the builds on Itch.io during the Jam. I will surely upload it after the voting ends, but if you want to play it early and be able to rate us I will gladly send you the build when it's (hopefully) ready. Just reach out to me on discord -> nickada on the Black Cat Jam! server.
