Game's Take on the Theme
Anansi, the title character, SPINS webs to deal area damage and to provide light during the night.

Did your team make the majority of the art and music during the jam?
Yes; The dragon model is a publicly available model on CG trader. Some models used in testing, plus one intended to be used for a statue remain in the games files. These are not in the final game. https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/animals/dinosaur/dragon-rigged-and-game-ready. Please also. note that the for the Windows version, I accidentally uploaded an entirely different game, which was made by another person. Please see "Anansi Windows" for that game. https://bundi-wa-athena.itch.io/anansi-for-windows This will be fully corrected after the game jam closes. Music by Kevin MacLeod. Publicly available textures for ground.

Hm, so in the first level with the fossilized dragons, I went up, left, found a lever, interacted with R and it sent me back to the first “hub” location where you have to jump in the void.

I couldn’t find the first boss. I’ll refrain from voting as it wouldn’t be representative of what you made.

Otherwise, it was nice to have an intro but it was a bit long (a lot of lore exposition) and the text auto-advanced with no way to pause it and advance at your pacing. The default auto-advance speed was too high and I couldn’t finish reading most of the lines.

I'll say right away — I really loved the rendition of Pachelbel’s Canon in D in the prologue. I was even a little disappointed when the game started and the music stopped 😅

It's a nice game! I wasn’t sure how to open the .dmg file, but I found the link to the Windows version. The graphical style is pretty cool. Unfortunately, I can't highlight any particular element, but overall, the game feels really solid.

That is Kevin MacLeod, not me! But I am happy you enjoyed the game! In order to be open an unsigned .DMG you have to give specific permission in your privacy settings to open it. MacOS is a bit overkill with "protecting" your computer on that front. And yeah it is for Mac so if you have a PC just ignore it.

I checked the other link you shared, thanks for providing it, I find the game really interesting, the aesthetics are nice and the gameplay is good, I rate graphics more than mechanics but all is nice, also if you have time please check my game, thanks!!

Developer

Absolutely! Will rate and comment by end of day! Thanks a million for playing! Also, check my devlog for future updates!

I tried the game link you provided from the windows and I can say that the music in the beginning is from a classical song on piano that I heard but I cannot find it out.

Oh yeah it is Kevin MacLeod (creative commons).

Can you upload a Windows/Linux/Web build? Seems like the only downloadable file is a .dmg, and mac is the only platform I don't have :'(

Played! The lore seems very interesting, I like the opening cutscene. I do want the ability to skip if I ever open the game a second time. It took me a while to find the bosses and even longer to figure out "T" is the attack button, I may have missed a tutorial. I'm also not sure what the hitboxes are for the attack.

However I do like that the bosses seem tied to the lore. You seem to have built a really cool world, I'd like to see it developed more!

I am super happy you enjoyed my game! Thanks for playing! Story is from a Ghanaian (Akan) folktale called "Anansi Retrieves the World's Stories." Obviously had to edit it a bit to make it fit the medium of a videogame and to fit the tone I wanted.

As for the controls, I had my friend gametest the game, and a similar problem occurred, so you are not alone at all on that one! In order to see the controls, when Nyame talks to you in the opening scene of the game, you have to select "What are the Controls?" in the dialogue options. Thinking about some different ways to make that easier to find, it is definitely something I will fix in the game's first update!

As for the hitboxes, the web itself does splash damage every frame. Roughly a box circumscribed around the web. Anansi's front leg actually does some damage too, but that is more an artifact from the first week or two of the game's development, when I was having some trouble with making a web. The python's hitbox has some issues, and I think because it's probably the first boss most people are going to beat, things can get pretty confusing pretty fast. So that will also be a first update fix.

The Windows version is another game, but I confess that I liked it, good atmosphere
