In what way does your game fit the theme?
Run It Back is about controlling a cute 2D character and using its special "Run It Back" ability to be able to complete puzzles. However, it gets rewinded after a certain amount of time so you have to be quick!

Did you write most of the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
My team member and I worked on this together, we are both programmers so we wrote most of the code from scratch although some bits were taken from tutorials or guided by random stackoverflow posts when we got stuck. This is our first game jam.

The assets were all from the Unity Asset Store but we had to adjust some of the assets to make things we couldn't find, such as the sign posts. The music and sound effects were all copyright-free.

Nice idea, felt a bit weird to play, though all the problems I had can be fixed with a bit of unity knowledge.

-The hitboxes were a bit disjointed for the platforms, creating the feeling that the character is somehow levitating. It's not a huge problem but that makes the game look more amateurish.
Along that, there is no need for triangular hitboxes on the spikes, even more if you want your character to walk on them. A square/rectangle around the shape would feel better. (Bonus point if the death hitbox is a bit smaller than the spike, to make it seems more fair)
-The rewind mechanic is nice, but I didn't really understood the explanation on the sign. Since its a rewind, I took it that it was the classical "go back to where you were X seconds ago". Which caused a suicide while trying to get the first rewind coin. So, yeah, a better explanation would be nice, but it's cool. Should also have a "start rewind" button, for when you have no more use for your clone, or it fell in a bottomless pit, so that we don't have to wait until the end of the timer.
-For your moving platforms, give them a constant speed. I don't know if you used an animation, or a Vector3 lerp for them, but it's pretty annoying when there is a platform that changes speed depending on its movement.
-Finally, I don't know if it's a consequence of the hitboxes, or some weird work on the animation, but your character is seemingly vibrating when you don't move. This doesn't change the gameplay but it looks bad and thus makes your game a bit worse. Same for the jump animation that looks pretty weird.

Overall, really cool, even more for a beginner's game. Only needs more polish/unity knowledge.

Thank you SO much for such detailed feedback. I will definitely note these down and get polishing asap :D

I see what you mean now with it looking like the character is levitating, I never really noticed that before. I also didn't notice the moving platforms weren't moving at a constant speed, I think I played the game through too many times to notice T_T

I will definitely look into fixing some of the colliders. The character "vibrating" is just his idle animation, he kinda wobbles on the spot I guess xD I've actually already added a change so you can manually rewind the character without having to wait the full time, this was something a lot of people mentioned but unfortunately we ran out of the time. I will be uploading a more polished version of the game after the game jam!

Thank you! I've also played your game and left some feedback too :)

Very clean and polished game. I really enjoyed it. It's an interesting way to make you think about your rewinding.

2 Small comments: The wording on one of your signs: "You're invincible until you get rewinded" made me think that my character is invincible, and dies when the rewind touches any traps. Possibly think of rewording there. And then possibly add a button to end your rewind early. A lot of times I sat waiting for 2 seconds because I already had the coin and was waiting for the timer to end.

Apart from that, REALLY fun game!

Developer

Thank you so much, it means a lot that you had fun playing!! :D

I agree with your feedback, this is actually something I've now implemented and yeah the text on the sign wasn't great, this has also been changed! I'll be uploading a better version of the game after the game jam is over. Thank you <3

Absolute pleasure! Would love it if you could rate our game too? https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-4/rate/723809

So cute the character design! The palette is great and the game gives a very funny experience! Like the other comments, a button for cancel the rewind would be great.

Amazing job!

Thank you so much! <3

hope you have a nice day!

Developer

I will check out your game today! I hope you have a nice day too :D

This game is fun and one of the better platformers among the submissions! My only critique is that I cannot cancel the rewind feature. This meant that if the rewind player fell off a ledge, I'd have to wait for time to expire. Overall, excellent work! :D

I'd appreciate if you could also rate my game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and I'm glad you had fun! Yeah unfortunately we ran out of time before we could add that in, but it's definitely something we're adding to the game once the game jam is over :D I will play your game too!

The game is very fun, I like that it has a bit of puzzle elements, I would have liked a button to cancel the rewind, the same R could be, good job !.

Developer

Thank you, I'm glad you had fun playing our game :D Yeah unfortunately we ran out of time before we could implement functionality to let you cancel the rewind, but it will be something added to the game after the game jam!

Beautiful graphics, cool concept, audio is a bit too repetitive but that's understandable as the time was just a week.

Developer

Yeah the BGM does sound a bit repetitive and gets stuck in your head for a while after... perhaps I could try to fit in different music for different levels when we add more stuff post game-jam. Thanks for the feedback!

Submitted

I enjoyed the game. The music fits the game well. I liked what you made with the theme. You had to think ahead and not just jump down.

Developer

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the game! :D

I enjoyed a lot the game, it's a simple platformer but it changes a bit from others in the sense that a clone is what rewinds and not actually the character itself. Maybe checkpoints would be nice in the game, but anyway good entry and good rating! Would appreciate if you checked out my game :)

Developer

Thank you very much! Checkpoints is definitely something we're planning to add to the game post game-jam :D I'm glad you enjoyed the game. We will definitely check out yours too!

the art is amazing

Developer(+1)

Thanks, we got it from the unity asset store, it's super cute :)

Submitted

I love this take on the theme! The art looks really cute and the game feels nice!

Developer

Thank you so much <3

Please add coyote jump. It is just so annoying when you die because of being 0.1 seconds late.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback, I'll see if it's something I can implement post game-jam! I'm planning to add checkpoints too so it won't be as frustrating to die and need to start from the beginning of the level again :)

Submitted

That would also be good. Going back to the beggining is not cool.

Submitted

It has a similar mechanic to many other games, but the small change of making it some sort of clone instead makes it so much better. I really liked that you could take risks in that form, and see what you could do.

Nice game!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and for your comment :D I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I had lot fun playing!!!!

Nice short game.  I liked the idea of creating a clone to get objects you couldn't otherwise. I just wish there was a way to manually rewind. Almost forgot, but the game feels really good to play as well. Good game!

Developer

Hey, thank you for the feedback! We're definitely going to add a way to manually rewind post game-jam :D Just ran out of time to implement initially. I'm glad you liked it!

Very cool game! Reminds me of some concepts from my game as well. However, I really liked how you guys implemented it. Good job :D

Developer

Thank you :D

Cool game, the movement worked at ease. The player however was floating which obviously can be fixed easily. Good take to the theme.

Developer

Thank you! Yeah there were a couple of things we didn't have time to fix but will defo look into polishing, so thank you for the feedback

Such a cool take on the theme!  I  really enjoyed. The rewind mechanic could use a little bit more explanation, but didn't take long for me to figure out. Nice job!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, maybe we will extend the tutorial a bit post game-jam :)
