If I get a question frequently I’ll update this post.

Questions

  • Can I use X tool/make X type of game? Yes. The rules state you can use any tool you would like for your game, as in any SDK, framework, rendering engine, paper and pencil (tabletop and card), etc.

  • What can I do before the jam? You can come up with ideas and even test stuff out if you’d like, but you can not start working on your game or creating any final assets or code. You can reuse previous code that wasn’t specifically made for this but you have to specify in the submission form.

  • How much time do we get? 1 week. Read the jam rules please.

  • Does the main character have to be fish? No, but the game has to feature fish. Please read the jam rules.

  • How old do I have to be? Old enough to have an itch.io account.

  • Why lol

  • Is there a prize? The winner gets a crappy drawing of a trophy with your name on it that will be sent in the end of voting email.

  • Define fish. If the argument can be made that something is a fish, you’re probably good to use it (Ex. shellFISH, mermaid, etc). Also feel free to invent your own fish as long as they’re visibly fish.

Can I join the game jam without taking part? I'm still learning and don't want to get involved just yet and ruin anyone's hard work. Just want to see what they are all about.

(+9)

Just join, and if your game is bad, no one is going to care.

Just make a game

Submitted (1 edit) (+2)

no there is a prize it says so in the main page:

The winner will get a very well drawn fish trophy with their name on it that I will draw all on my own :) (if you want examples of my professional work just look at this page)

Edit 1: nvm I realize now that there being no prize is just because the trophy is yet to be drawn

HostSubmitted(+2)

There wasn’t but I thought a goofy thing would be to draw a crappy trophy so I added it, will update the faq later

Submitted(+3)

I love the idea for the drawing and I will fight for it no questions asked

You're not the only one :)

I'm definitely joining just to attain the trophy

(1 edit) (+1)

peak of shitpostery (def going to join this)

Maybe a dumb question but is the jam ranked? Since there is a winner that means all of the games will be scored?

HostSubmitted(+1)

Yes, all games get scored, otherwise there would be no way to decide the winner

Submitted

fish.

Submitted(+1)

I've been in a slump with creating anything (to the point of almost quitting). Until I saw this fishy jam. Guess i'm going to try to create something at least. (aka a very bad visual novel iwi)

So thanks for getting my brain interested again in doing stuff ^^

I want to be sure before the jam starts, but is having other people help with composing music and play-testing permitted?

Submitted

it says teams of any size are permitted so I’m sure it’s fine. Make sure you give anyone who helps you some credit though

Are you allowed to make the game/level design before the jam starts? That counts as 'working on the game' already right?

HostSubmitted

Yeah that counts as working on the game, you can think about it but don’t put anything down yet

is it ok to use some AI generated images. or stock photos in the game?

HostSubmitted

No ai, stock is fine

is it ok to edit some photos with AI? as in remove the background or remove some aspects of the photo using a AI tool? so long as the picture itself wasn't generated using AI is that ok?

thanks

Submitted

Hi! Quick and dumb question regarding language: since this is a ranked jam (with obvious scoring of the submission), it's best that the game is in English, isn't it? I'm guessing so, It'd be hard to judge something unintelligible but wanted to confirm just to be sure. Thanks (and fish) in advance!

i would personally make the name in English just in case, but if i was ranking something on the level of quality, it wouldn't really influence my rating.

tho im not the person in charge of the ranking so i can only speak personally. hope that helps :)

Is it okay to remix assets/audio from AAA games?  Is it okay to use third party plugins or packages, for example, a combat mechanics package for Unity?

question: why can we not use ai for visuals? And to what extent can I use ai? Like no use for brainstorming, prototyping, planning, or concept art? Also why doesn’t AI count as a tool? I personally use ai to get rough drafts for me to draw over and for me to animate later. I’m not quite sure why can’t use the same tools as we would to release a game on steam for example. I understand if it’s to not exclude artists from competition but it’s not like ai can replace artists without being obvious anyways seeing as you still need to animate repaint everything because it doesn’t use a your palette. Also for single devs like me who doesn’t have much time to work on a game I really dont want to waste a talented artist’s time because I can only work a say 2 hours a day on the game and especially since it’s my first jam I don’t know if there will even be a finished game at the end. Sorry for being a tad long winded it just had me confused

Submitted

i think by no ai art, they meant to not use ai art for any final visuals

Submitted(+1)

yeah but I hope they reply to this so I’m able to comply with the rules though. Because I mean there is no listing that we can’t use specific tools like ai so I’m just going to have to guess if I don’t hear anything back

HostSubmitted(+2)(-1)

The legality and ethics around using AI generated content is questionable, this is more for like visuals like I don’t care that much if you use github copilot, but AI generated imagery is legally questionable and also tends to lower the spirits of artists putting huge amounts of effort into their projects. I can’t stop you from brainstorming or prototyping with it, but it shouldn’t be in the final game. I’m a solo dev too and I’m not great at art, but I always prefer making my own even where I’m inexperienced since a game jam is an opportunity to improve and get better at your art.

Submitted

so for code it’s fine and as long as you change the images a decent amount (basically a complete redraw) it’s fine? Do you have a system for actually seeing if people use ai to disqualify them or is it a rule without enforcement? Ty for response btw

HostSubmitted (2 edits) (+1)(-2)

Generally AI art is noticeable but it’s more of an honour thing, like it wouldn’t be very nice to. I’d say it’s fine to use as inspiration for your drawings or whatever, and I can’t like track that or anything, but keep it out of the final product

Edits: clarification

also what about AI trained on images you have rights too?

I believe itch.io is a place to express your creativity and capabilities. Personally I think using AI for anything is published here, just beats the original purpose.

What comes to mind whenever this topic comes around is:

  • Why use AI here? Are you trying to win popularity/money?
  • Are you not capable of publishing a game prototype with the mindset of “this is not a AAA game”?
  • Are you incapable of producing any product by your own?

This is just my opinion and other people opinions are as valid as mine. We’re just sharing points of views.

I’m not trying to make money. What I’m trying to do is make a fun video game using the tools that I will like need to use when working for a major company. For better or worse I personally don’t see a world where the use of AI isn’t majorly used in this industry so I just want to mess around with it to learn about it. That’s just my opinion though and you have the right to yours as well but you don’t need to assume someone means the worst when they ask a question about rules

Interesting game theme! I'll join in too.

Even though there may not be (or are) prizes, I will definitely enter the game.

Hopefully I can made the game in time XD

Submitted

are horror elements welcome in this game jam? I don't mean like jump scares or ghosts, just adding some fish monsters and a horror atmosphere.

HostSubmitted

Yeah that’s cool

Submitted

Will a theme be announced when the jam starts or is the theme simply "fish"?

HostSubmitted(+1)

fish

Submitted

"You can use any pre-existing assets (asset packs) as long as they weren't made for the jam" Does this mean no using pre made fish models?

Submitted(+1)

I think it means you can use asset packs or sprites that you made for other things but you can't start drawing the assets that you'll use for the jam now.

HostSubmitted

Correct

Submitted

What criteria will we be judged on? or will it just be overall how fun it is?

(+2)

The more fish, the better.

1 fish = 1/5

10 fish = 2/5

999 quadrillion fish = 5/5

i have a game about sailing a boat I made for another jam. Can I use it as a base for fish jam?

Submitted

I asked this question earlier in a post but didn't get a response yet so I thought I should ask it here. Can you use AI music? I don't particularly plan too but many of the game dev I know are recommending software to try  (if I can I will let everyone know the results in the Streak Club! (in a shotgun goldfish dev log))

Submitted

technically it said (no AI art) so if music is not art, then you could technically use it, lol

is AI even capable of creating Art? anyone decided if this is philosophically true?

Submitted

true lol by calling it AI art you are saying that it is art i never even though of that. i mean is code art? i could have generated all the code if it isn’t art lol
