Had a great time playing this one, the level/game design is pretty neat and I found myself to try hard several times to win. Didn't manage to pass level 3 but I haven't given up yet!

The music reminded me of the Monkey Island series a bit, which feels in line with your overall style for sure. The dark electronic drop with the vocal line was really interesting and memorable too - contrasts a lot to the quirky bassoon melody. Wonderful visuals, and very structured introduction of different mechanics as you play, which makes things feel very smooth. I find the idea of a dodo squashing hunters by jumping on them pretty satisfying too haha!

Developer

The music was by Mick Cooke. It’s very fitting, although I think I’d appreciate it a lot more if I didn’t have listen to it so much while making the game!

I always spend a while on the levels and am never totally satisfied, so I appreciate the praise! :)

Loved the audio, loved the art! This was super neat!

It's a real platformer! With voice acting! And that kickass scroll graphic! I like it! I'm not a fan of 3D platformers in general but this had all the bits of a platformer I'd expect and it's nicely polished. It wouldn't look out of place on the android store.

If you were going to take it commercial though, I'd say it needs more juice. A bigger fanfare for finishing the levels and some reason to go back and try again. It was a little disappointing that collecting fruit that you didn't need to refill your health didn't do anything. I'd have like a points system or extra eggs that all get laid in the nest at the end of the level, sort of like the stars you get at the end of so many mobile games.

A solid game, well made!

Developer

Ack! getting a bonus for getting fruits without healing would have been so good! D: Thanks for the feedback, that kind of thing would have probably fit right in. As the lowly programmer I can’t take an iota of credit for the art/sound/VA, I was lucky to get to work with very talented people!

Very fun platformer, this was!

Maybe a bit too hard for the last level when the level platforms don't ascend much and the whole "cloud platforms turn on and off each time you jump" thing kinda threw me for a loop. Hitboxes for enemies were also kinda vague so I didn't know in the moment if I was about to land on them in a way that would defeat them without taking some health from my dodo. The best part was the 2D artwork and the overall presentation; I was especially surprised to actually hear voice acting for the narration!

Connection to the theme is pretty basic with not much relation in gameplay terms, but the game as a whole was still really good!

Really appricate the feedback! Difficulty is definitley an issue I have when making games! Probably should have made the hitboxes clearer, I made them pretty small for the player + enemies. Still can’t believe I got into a team that made such good assets for the game.

Yeah we thought of using Dodos pretty early on with the theme, originally was going to be a simple real time strategy about sacrificing dodos to help other dodos live. But we moved to a more arcadey type of game.

Lots to really admire here. A lot of care has gone into the art style and I really enjoyed lots of it. The water was really nice. If I was going to make suggestions the two main ones would be that the movement felt a bit under juiced, whilst being fast it never felt fun to move. The other would be more checkpoints. Especially in a Game Jam I just want to get through as much of it as I can and see all the work you put in. I was getting pretty bored of starting over each time. Checkpoints would solve this. But they are easy simple tweaks to a pretty solid and enjoyable game. Nice work.

I also love the art, it was done by Thanos Gramosis, Very lucky to have him on the team :)

The gameplay was my job though! I spent some time on the movement to make it feel ‘birdlike’. I did do some testing with other people, and made the movement more fast-paced as a result, but maybe it ended up not quite being fast or slow enough to feel ‘right’.

Your comments on checkpoints is interesting, as I did consider them at the beginning. I never really considered how I should take into account that in a game jam you want others to experience everything without frustrating them, that the level of investment is much lower than a ‘proper’ game. I will definitely remember that for next time I do a jam, thank you!

I made a note for myself too! In terms of the movement it's perfectly fine. I am just an old man now who has played a lot of platform games and the ones that get it really right raise the bar in terms of feel. N+ has to be one of the best examples. It feels lush and so having played that for years of my life I can't help but have it in my mind when playing any platform game.

Developer

I have never played N+, i’ve seen it a few times though, must give it a go at some point!

Great job fellow devs, the game has a really nice vibe and distinct soul to it. The music, voice acting and narrative fit all together, and the rising seas, keep a simple platform game exciting.

Checkpoint would be a nice addition, since the later levels are long and it gets frustrating to keep repeating it all over again.

A game with personality, good job!

Developer

Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback!

I couldn't get the original or Polished versions to work I'm afraid. Sorry!

Developer

Oops, sorry! The only dependancy of the game is Vulkan, which should be automatically installed if your gpu drivers are up to date. (list of supported GPUs https://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/)

Hello, I'm trying to play your demo from the download zip, but it doesn't appear to work on my end? It doesn't appear to load properly. I'm using the Windows version.

Developer

Whoops, that’s a concern! Does your gpu support vulkan? https://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/
