Very cool game! Had lots of fun playing it. Really liked your art style and the sound effects!
I love the juggling mechanic. Maybe add higher gravity?
I did cap the max momentum vertically and horizontally to 8 pixels per frames. I could fiddle with the acceleration, but I decided to have the food be more floaty otherwise it was very hard to control, and it would accelerate too much, so this was a design decision.
Thanks for the feedback!
I love the art style, and it’s easy to understand where the meat is even when it’s off screen. It was fun to overcook the meat as well. Maybe some less saturated colors for background, and more saturated colors for what we can interact with would make it easier to understand the objective. I’m not sure, it was just a thought. I liked juggling the food. Good job on the entry.
thanks for the feedback, Ill let my colleague know!
A good fun game. Nice graphics and audio. Control feels difficult at first but it's get easier the more you play. I'm thinking this would be good in VR.
lol, I see what you mean. A game with the same kind of principle could indeed be an enjoyable VR game!
Fun game!
Would've been better if the player had the spatula visible at all times instead of just appearing only when hitting the meat since it's kind of hard to control the direction of the meat bounce with just the curser.
Also, that dog looks like it knows my full legal name and address.
the dog is actually an undercover FBI agent (you gotta keep this a secret).
about the spatula, it was mostly an afterthought to create more feedback for the player clicking the meat sprites. It is purely a visual effect that I implemented in the last 12 hours of the jam. I could have definitely reworked the controls to work in conjunction with the spatula, but that would involve a complete rehaul of the physics system. I do see the value in the spatula helping the game be more intuitive, Ill probably consider it next time, but for the jam it was way outside of the project scope, and I don't have enough experience making physics games to implement something like that at the moment.
Thanks for the feedback!
Enjoyed this a lot! It was really satisfying getting the meat to finally land on the BBQ and then the plate. I didn't feel like I had any real control over the direction the meat bounced, or how far, but that was part of the charm in a way.
It was indeed meant to be tough to control, but if you know the secret, you can control it. The 'How To Play' menu contains hints as to how to control it, and I wanted the difficulty curve and experimentation to be the thing that would teach the player (a bit like Breath of the Wild, where the entire starting area is a sandbox to learn the mechanics of the game).
The level 1 only has 1 meat piece to juggle, so you can get used to the controls, while the following levels have increasing difficulty (level 4 and 5 have 3 meats to juggle at once).
If you want a breakdown on how to control it, the more close to the center you hit it, the farter it goes. hitting it at the bottom or the top will allow smaller vertical momentum gain, for more accurate control. Also, you can control how much it goes to the left or the right by how far you are hitting it from the center horizontally.
By the way, you don't need to click on the food specifically. The hitbox is meant to be forgiving, by allowing the click to work as long as you click on the 128x128 pixel square sprite of the meat object.
Thanks for playing!
As someone else said - strong King of the Hill vibes! Very on point with the theme. It's very tricky to juggle meat! :)
Nice idea, I think the artwork looks really cool kind of gives me a King Of The Hill feel. With some smoother physics I could see this being a really fun style game for a tablet.
The game is pretty fun and challenging, especially once there are more than two foods on the screen to juggle. I appreciate the audio and art but maybe you could have some feedback from the background when the food is cooked and juggled into the pan correctly? For example, you could have people in the background give a thumbs up or maybe one of them starts eating. Feels like this way would give more acknowledgment/reward to the player.
Other than that, for the controls. I have no problem with the spatula only appearing when clicking the food. But I do wish I can have better control of the juggling direction/strength. I somewhat can get the food to go in the opposite direction I click, but sometimes it just goes too high or not in the direction I want. But on the other hand that's the fun part of juggling and not having full control over where the food goes. So I don't know if giving more control over where food goes would be a good suggestion.
yeah, getting the controls to feel just right in a physics game like this is something that takes a long time. I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for a game jam I could have really perfected the feel of the controls. Lots of variables to control them behind the scene hahaha.
I would have liked to go a lot deeper with feedback and SFX for this game, because I value feedback in video game a whole lot. 24 hours before the deadline, I was still building the levels and the menu system, and I clearly ran out of time. Since this is my first game jam ever, I'm pretty happy about the result, but if I have to do it again, the fact I know my tools and the craft better means that I could implement a lot more features and polish on a game in the same time window.
Thanks for the feedback!
Cool game, the sizzling sound was a nice touch :-) Just some feedback. The menu text was hard to read against the blue background. The clouds were a little distracting, possibly going too fast or too bright. I wished the spatula was visible throughout and not only on mouse click, to get a sense of where to hit the meat. Some possible things to add on for later: being able to upgrade spatula in future levels, being able to feed the dog for extra points :-) Overall cool game and I liked the art!
Thanks for the positive criticism! Ill keep it in mind for future projects! Guess Ill have to think about color theory and objects in the peripheral view next time!
if you're curious, here is the repository for the game on Github
I have no idea why but I just kept playing, satisfying 10/10, but that dog is looking kinda sus
