Haha that was cool. I really like the tentacle movements and animations~ Some cool effects too when breaking the barrel and catching the humans. Also, I love the 'A Short Hike' pixel effect on the low poly art (how do you do that?) Congrats on submitting a cool auto-running game to the jam! Please check out mine if you haven't :D
I'm glad you like it.
The graphics effect uses a render texture to render the lower resolution in Unity while still working on higher resolution computers. This render texture has no smoothing or anything, keeping the pixels sharp. For the models themselves you'll need a toon shader. The fewer colours that show up the better, as gradients look super weird.
I went around and created my own toon shader using examples found around the web. These techniques combine give a really nice effect, of a low resolution world, that still feels somewhat detailed. I was still experimenting with it during the jam, and I don't think low-poly is the best for it. I think it works best with surprisingly detailed meshes, and normal maps, but the textures of the images have to be fairly sharp, using minimal anti-aliasing. Aliasing is what we want.
I'm glad you enjoyed it though.
Sweet, another 682 cage match candidate. xD
Wild game! I included it in my GMTK Game Jam compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :)
Wow, that was creepy as hell! Very interesting horror game!
Cool game! I really like this idea, you have a nice presentation. Good work for only 48h! Keep creating games!
Strong use of the theme in a lot of details. I like it! Art was solid. With more time I can just imagine the gameplay, would be pretty good.
It reminded of the plot of Elfen Lied! I liked the vignette at the start when you see the monster murdering the first researcher.
With more time, you could really explore the tentacle-as-a-weapon mechanic. There's a lot of potential there.
Really cool! The tentacle upgrades were awesome, and the ideia that the more powerfull you became, less control you had was pretty fitting, also really liked that it had two endings and the SCP inspiration. Overrall i really liked it, graphics where also cool, with the weird characters and tentacle animations.
Yessss losing control as you become stronger is nice ! You can’t even stop when they want to free you…I can just imagine the character killing whole cities and not being able to stop !
I loved the art and animation, you did a great job with this!
I don't know if this was your intent but two things happened while playing this game: "Woah!" and "Hahha". The "haha" is the one I don't know if it was intentional. :)
FIrst, during the story, the first kill took me by surprised and made me exclaim "Woah!" Then, again after the second kill and growing stronger. Finally, after losing control. lol
Really cool tentacles effect and movement with them felt really good and the overall presentation gave that vibe of losing control and becoming a monster.
