I like the twist on golf game! Nice sound. It's fun how to manage the controls of golf ball. I encountered the bug that crashes the game. Pretty good game overall

Submitted(+1)

It's a shame this crashed so often - I really wanted to explore the mecahnics some more.

A nice and playful idea!

An interesting twist on golf! I like the concept of the game very much! The game is fun to play
Unfortunately I could not go too far because of the bug that crashes the game if you spend a long time on a level. But I think that issue will be fixed in the post-jam version so no worries!

Overall an awesome game! Great job!

the text is kinda blurry, otherwise the game is fun to play!!

Good Job!

Developer(+1)

That was on purpose (I assume you mean the tutorial text) but I do agree that it could be cleaned up with a more appropriate font. Glad you liked it :)

Probably one of the coolest golf games I've ever played haha. Really good and fun to play with these mechanics, great job on this submission!

Submitted(+1)

Haha i enjoyed this one. Im not a fan of golfing games but this one was really fun. I couldnt play the later levels becouse of the bug you mentioned :/ i tried to play fast but it looks like i like to take my time thinking. Other than that the only thing that bugs me is the camera sometimes i had to randomly hit the ball so i could see the other parts of the level.

Overall i liked the game you could port this to mobile too it would be fun to play on it great work :D

Developer

I've been working on the camera, currently it zooms out based on the distance between the balls or the current speed of them (so when you pull back it zooms out, and when they're flying fast it also zooms out). Could also do some sort of direct camera control to let you pan around maybe.

Submitted(+1)

Cool concept, and I liked the presentation.

I was pretty bad at it, so I did see more crashes than levels, but it was good fun, so :)

Submitted(+1)

Great game! It feels great to play, congrats!

Submitted(+1)

Very cool idea and the presentation is so well executed and fun. There's a good feel to it and it is satisfying when you land the shot you want. I do, however, feel that it is a bit sensitive and touching and I ended up hitting the ball sometimes twice in a row without intending to. Overall, pretty sweet.

Developer(+1)

Thank you :) I think I know what causes the double hit (it is triggered directly off the user input, not the location of the balls) so I can definitely do some tweaking to make that feel tighter.

Submitted(+1)

@Mystical_Pidgeon it was enjoyable, although it took me sometime to get a hang of the controls, but overall its a good one :)

Submitted(+1)

I loved playing this type of game back in the day. Thank you for bringing back those memories. The gameplay is solid but the camera is too close I think. This can lead to trial and error. Other than that, great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you :D I'm doing some camera tweaks right now (zoom out based on ball distance and speed) but I'm thinking of adding in direct camera control of some sort (either a pan or zoom). Any thoughts on that?

Submitted

I would keep it simple, just zoom it out and feel it...build > Test > Analyze...Repeat

Submitted(+1)

Really solid experience on the whack world of bouncy physics and golf. I have played similar games before in previous jams but this one was very well done especially with the controls and visuals. The only real complaint is how close up the camera is. If it was zoomed out a little more, it would be easier to get a feel for the full course or at least plan better shots. I played it here:

Developer(+1)

I've been messing around with the camera. I agree the base camera should be zoomed out a bit, but I'm also playing with having it zoom out more depending on the distance of the 2 balls and the speed they are moving (far away or moving fast = see more of the level). Thoughts?

Submitted(+1)

maybe a sweeping shot of the entire coyrse before the level starts or maybe a button that allows you to go into an eagle eye mode to see the entire course, and that would allow you to keep the current camera setup!

Developer(+1)

I like both of those, definitely gonna try and implement and see how they feel. Thanks :D

A great take on a golf game, the unique way you hit the balls, and the fact that you never really stop moving makes for quite the challenge. Definitely difficult to get the hang of, and I can't say the constant crashing helps with that haha, but, it's more than fun enough to make up for it, the presentation is solid and effective and the menus are a really nice extra bit of polish. Overall a pretty good time. Nice work!

Developer

thank you so much :)

Submitted(+1)

Awesome game!  Also, nice work on the menus -- it is very nicely polished!

This is actually a pretty unique concept - it uses the same 2 ball set up that many people may use, however, separating the controls for each ball is a refreshing twist. It doesn't look like much, but it catches you by surprise when you start to play.

I think the camera shake and sound here, while simple, help a lot too. You'd be surprised how many jam games are missing these things, since they add so much to the overall feel.

The fact that you created your own art and music help a lot. I think the art looks pretty neat, though I found the music to be somewhat repetitive after a while. Making your own music during the 48 hours though is difficult, so it's hard to be very critical. I have to wonder which you think would suit you better - making your music during the jam only, or starting on your music before the jam and having a more polished end product? I'm curious because I have the same question for my game too.

I think the game is fun precisely because you feel like you lack complete control of the 2 characters, but I can also see other players getting turned off to the game as a result. I feel like there is some balance you could achieve here, where the characters are somewhat easier to control than they are now but still have that unpredictable quality to them. Maybe this involves something like a loose aim assist but for WASD controls. Or maybe even simpler - maybe you use the mouse to aim the characters, and you can switch which character is being aimed with different button presses (left click vs right click). I think this other jam gam "Balls to the Wall" does a similar thing to you guys but you feel slightly more in control: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2021/rate/1083414

I could see this being a viable mobile game if you improved the base mechanics a little and added more levels.

Thank you! I can't thank you for anything you've said not regarding music and art since that's what I did, but I am very glad to see that you liked it. This was the first Game Jam I've been a part of and I'm just glad that my art was at least serviceable.

Regarding music, yeah, it's a little repetitive lol. I made it in around an hour on Bosca Ceoil. That's probably one of the things I'd try to do a little bit better with if I had to do it again.

Submitted(+1)

The game looks really cool.

I don't play golf games much, but it really seemed enjoyable and the music was good as well.

I found the most beautiful thing to be pixel art. I had some issues with the controls though.

Good job!

(1 edit) (+2)

Thank you for liking the game and the art! I was a little nervous about the art since I've never been in a Game Jam before but I'm happy to see that people didn't think it was terrible.

edit to say that I didn't code it, I just did the art and music. I don't want people to mistake what I said and misattribute stuff since Mystical_Pidgeon did such a wonderful job.

Submitted(+1)

This is your first! Amazing job!

Submitted(+1)

I really like pixelart, and the mechanics are good, however I am not a big fan of golf games, but this one is fine

Thank you, I'm glad to see you liked the art.

Submitted(+1)

I really enjoyed your interesting take on golf! as a mini putt fan, i loved this new twist that had me working on my timing as much as my aim when it came to shooting. presentation is very slick too! great work!

Submitted(+1)

Your presentation of the game is solid. I am always jealous of interactive title screens. It just adds so much for so little. And every time I don't do it, I'm like maaan. Once I got into the game, it was unique take on golf. Though I'll be honest, I had some challenge with the controls. I just couldn't seem to steady my aim and when I'd get to a goal I'd always fail. The game did crash on me once with a very long error message. Overall though, I think this would be a great mobile golf game.

Developer

Thanks! This was the first time I've done custom UI button animations in Unity, was pretty surprised at how easy it was. Totally agree on the controls, I was too close when working on it and just got used to the quirks of it. An update will smooth them out with some more analog options as well. Apologies for the crash, that error text is big and scary cause it gets thrown by some obfuscating unity code haha, I think I've got it sorted though.

Great fun!

Congratulations, great job!
