So far I'm as baffled as the next guy. But somehow it still felt really good. I enjoyed it very much, even though I have no idea what it was that I enjoyed!

Thanks for reviewing my game. There are too many things hiding behind the scene so do not worry about it too much.
You may discover some good sound sequence through trial and error and record them down to replicate the music next time!
Well this is definitely the most confusing game I've played in the jam. I still have almost no idea what was going on, but it seemed as though there was some sort of.. I guess strategy sort of? I'm not really a music person so I really don't know. Mostly I'm just left very confused. Especially by the tutorial, the button icons make it feels as though they were multiple buttons? But they.. are/aren't?
Overall though an interesting concept that feels very unexplained.
Thanks for testing the game! Your feeling of confusion is normal here because that is my intention to distract the player with soothing music, static ambience, time limit and huge amount of figures(can display up to 70 digits at a time). Basically the player has to experiment each of the buttons and figure out the scoring pattern which is pretty daunting after reviewing so many game jam games. Most people will just give up and enjoy the music, thus, explained the rest of the comments.
It's rare to find a game where I have no idea what I'm doing yet still enjoy playing it. Relaxing and strangely satisfying.
Thanks for trying my game. Perhaps what I am doing is niche so no one expects the unusual objectives of the game.
sorry i did not get it , but audio was good
Thanks for trying the game! You don't have to apologize though, none of us got it anyway >_<
You got a really chill game. I wish I could perfectly understand what was going on -- I have a sort of an idea, but don't quite understand how the squares are updated. It's very relaxing and chill, just like you wanted, so fantastic job with that.
What would it be like if you had letters instead of numbers? As a musician, I feel like I might be able to understand the game a little better if instead of "1" it said "C" or something. Just a thought.
Thanks for making the game! It's a pleasure to play.
>>> spoiler alert <<<
If you are interested on the musical side behind the scene, I may expose a little bit more on the game design here.
The approach I have taken to design the game is by reassembling the chord progression that is common in lo-fi genre music. I have some basic codes to generate random chords and auto-correct them to the nearest predefined chords, prioritized based on lo-fi or jazz chords and the importance of each note in the chord. The algorithm is definitely not perfect but it will work for a game jam game.
I could have gone further to make this game more specialized for musician or even mathematician(base 12 numbers) but hey, the theme of the jam is 'seven' ; )
A nice, chill game. Listening to the chords was my favorite part. My chief issues are with accessibility: there is a significant cognitive load trying to figure out how to play the game and even with the tutorial and your help I feel like I'm still a bit confused. Maybe a video tutorial would have helped? Also, separate volume controls for the background sounds and the chords would have been helpful.
Thanks for trying out my game and the advice on the volume controls which will most likely be my immediate improvement on the game.
Regarding the confusion that you had, it is just part of the experience of this puzzle game to let you focus on your listening and intuition more - "I don't know how it works exactly but it sounds nice". I am afraid that the more mechanism you know beforehand it will spoil the game experience more as there is nothing much else in this mini game. To be honest even myself as the creator I don't know how to score the best from it... All I can expose are the algorithms on the random chord generation, scoring system and the music chord corrections which I don't think they will help much in experiencing the game.
This is such a creative game! I wouldn't have understand the mechanics unless I saw your comments below... but I appreciate your work on making it some musically inclined. I think the "how to play" could've been a little more clear. But I think you should make more (or update this game) music theory based games!
Thanks for trying out my game! I always wanted to make a game based on some music theory without overwhelming non-musician players and I saw this game jam being the opportunity thus I did it. I would justify my simple
lazy'how to play' guide to be part of the the mysterious feeling in this game lolI’m going to say this off the bat… I never felt I totally understood the underlying mechanics. I feel I got some vague notion, but never fully got there…
And, yeah, I think that’s totally alright! The game was very relaxing and rewarded you more for taking your time between button presses. It was very nice!
The graphics were clean and clear, just like the audio accompanying them!
I’ll be honest, given that I haven’t totally figure out what exactly is going on, there’s not much I can say about how the mechanics work or where, if anywhere, improvements could be made… so… I’ll just simply say, very lovely, relaxing game! I do quite like it!
Thanks for being the first one who streamed my first game! The mystery of the mechanism is also part of the puzzle elements of the game and this is how you feel (I presume) trying to compose a piece of music
Its interesting. I tried it a couple of times and didn't get what I was supposed to do. The how to explained I shouldn't get 7 but other then not choosing 7 in the bottom choices I didn't get how the 7 ended up in the middle.
Thanks for trying out the game! This game's puzzle is very subtle in the sense that it is actually not stopping you to press 7(notice how is the wording and formatting?). The puzzle has no real solution. The ultimate solution of this puzzle is that you will get relaxed after playing this game and realized that pressing some 7s is necessary for a good music.
Really great experience. The way the chords played on selection and the subtle rain in the background, made a very relaxing gaming experience. Great job!
I am glad that you enjoyed the mini game! I feel like most of the games here will be challenging and stressful so I tried to make a more "Zen"-like game for relaxation.
Very neat. Just about the first game I cared enough to play several times and try to better figure out. Failed in that, though, I still don't really understand what choices I'm making.
I'd love to better understand the mechanic, if you feel like sharing it.
Thanks for trying it out! This is my first game so I focus on lesser content but in higher quality. One of my objective that I did not state in the description is that I want to let non-musician to experience how it feels to compose a piece of music. So the mechanic that you are curious is essentially how to compose a smooth music by doing better chord progressions. The 7s here represent the 7th notes in a major/minor scale which have the kind of hanging or unresolved feeling and expecting 1 (root note) to be played next to resolve it and the whole game is designed based on this concept. When you press a button, 2 of the 7 grids on the top panel will be updated and the next numbers to be updated are previewed/predicted on each of the button. Internally, each of the 14 next possible music chord (note combinations up to 4) is randomly generated but reproducible if you can remember all the button sequence pressed since the beginning. All in all, there is not any real rule to play it but generally a score of 100 and above indicates good chord progression.
(continue here)
to better guide the player, I discourage the player to spam '7' so that any 7 that showed up on the top panel will be temporary locked and indirectly disable some buttons completely or partially. These '7's will be automatically resolved to '1' by waiting 7 seconds pressing nothing which subsequently re-enabling all the buttons. The internal mechanism and calculation are a bit complex and messy but they are not important to enjoy this game. Just do not blindly smash the buttons and you are good to go.
I love everything about this. Thank you so much for going into more detail. ...First game? serious congratulations. Even though I found it somewhat unintelligible, it was more compelling and more satisfying than many. I still have so many questions, but I'm excited to play it again with the information you shared.
I really like the vibe of the game (sound, art, visual feedback from button presses etc.). The poster you made to explain the mechanics is cool but some more words would have been really helpful.
Thanks for trying it! The vibe of the game is the main focus as it is a mini game to chill out. I try to make the guide less verbose so that the player will not get overwhelmed by the mechanism and learn more through trial and error.
I liked the piano sounds and the background ambience. Even after reading the instructions it was not very clear to me how the numbers would be effected by each of the cards at the bottom.
Thanks for the feedback! Those numbers are meant to be random so don't worry too much about them. If you happen to find a good sounding sequence and remember it from the beginning it is reproducible for every new game.
