Game description
An endless runner, literally, where your sole goal is to dodge oncoming traffic of walls and collect shoes. Why shoes you ask? Because one can never have too many!
Collecting shoes is how the game ties into the theme, "being in possession of as many shoes as possible".

Controls
use W,A,D or Arrow keys to move about in the space, you'll get the hang of it right away! Mouse also orbits around player.

Heya, sorry it took some time, but here is my gameplay video of your game! :) https://www.twitch.tv/videos/400424216

Much obliged! Thanks!

Rad look! The graphics were killer. Coupla notes:

  1. I thought I was hitting everything because it would dissapear as soon as I passed it. Maybe wait until it's off camera to get rid of things.
  2. The buttons in the menu did not work well. I had to hover the 'Play' button hard to get my mouse to click it. I could not change the Player name as much as I tried.
  3. It kept saying "half speed" but I didn't know if that was because I was being punished and slowing down, or halfway to full speed because I was doing well.
  4. Probably not necessary, but putting some bounds on the camera is probably a good idea.

Of course, I wouldn't have many opinions if it wasn't fun.

Developer

Happy to hear you loved the graphics! Looked well shit at first.

  1. Now thats an interesting remark! Waiting a bit before sending the items away sounds good. I'll try it out!
  2. Yes. Sadly the ui curve messed with the input location, working on a fix. Name can be changed, but a fair amount of trial and error with a pinch or pure luck is required. I understand this is undesirable, but I was a big fan of the Curve so I decided to leave it in.
  3. mhm! I hear you there. Do you think a different colour and a cheerful sound effect, underlining that it's an achievement would help?
  4. Yup.

Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate your input very much as always.

bro... this game is super polished! totally loved it! I think the 4k resolution messed up the mouse detection for the buttons or something? I was only able to click underneath the buttons in the main menu.  I enjoyed the music and the concept. Everything was pretty solidly executed.  I feel like  picking up speed takes a bit too long, or maybe we just start too slow? that made me a bit impatient ahaha. I was able to hit max speed like twice and medium like every time I played. I wish the sideway movement was a bit snappier/faster, since I got hit right after getting to the empty tracks during the transition :'(. Gotta love how clean everything looks man! you guys did an awesome job! truly inspiring. Why the name Celantro? that sounds like a Veggie in Spanish ahaha.

Awesome work! would love to see more =D

Yeah the UI curve moved the pixels but not the input map, Im working out a solution. There have been some superb ideas on this message board alone!

I fully agree on the speed, I've also thought about adding a new kind of pickup tht would make you pick up speed faster.

Ouch, sorry to hear the transitions didn't line up with physics! I'll be looking into that.

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate that you took your time to leave your thoughts here for me, very valuable.

I don't know why the games called Celantro but it is fun. I kept trying to get a high score, but I dont think I was good enough. anyways, I loved almost every thing about this game. the music is great and the audio is pretty good to. the game looks great and has this nice angle that allows you to see whats coming up.

critique
I think the game takes to long to speed up. the fun parts are when you are moving quick and dodging obstacles. Also when you mess up and get hit, it completely stops you and I have to wait a while before i get going again. The camera shake when speeding up makes it difficult when your at high speeds I think there's a little too much shake.

Developer

Celantro is a made up name I came up with, it has no links to the vegetable either haha.

The idea of starting with either a higher speed of the speed up being faster sounds very good! Thanks for the tip!The shake you mentioned, should only occur for 2 seconds, was that so?

One way to fix the button problem is to draw a custom mouse cursor sprite that's also affected by the distortion and hide the system mouse.

The player design is just absolutely hilarious, and I like that you used simple effects for the rest of the graphics which looks beautiful. Really fun endless running concept. I think unlockable modes with different obstacles and color schemes would really flesh out the game.

Developer

Not bad! That soluion would work indeed!

Stoked you enjoyed the character concept! It had actually been a drawing I had done a long time ago and been meaning to implement it ever since! Yes, extra modes, colours, new tracks. So much potential right?

Much obliged for your feedback! I would like to ask, what would be the first you'd change/implement(apart fomr the mouse, that's a must)?

Honestly if it were my game, I would spend time polishing the existing gameplay before adding new features. I didn't mention it because I believe it goes without saying. Since I'm in college I was able to ask a bunch of classmates to try my game and I tweaked the levels a lot after gauging their reactions. I can't really give you advice on what I would change specifically to make it feel better, you're the one who's spent the most time developing this concept so you will know what would make the game fun.

Developer

I agree with that, further polish to what is already there before moving onto new features would be my next step as well. Thanks!

Graphics and musics are on point! Also, I really appreciate the minimalistic design both in UI and game assets, with some futuristic  effect like the "halo style" transparent platform and the character design.
Sometimes in runner games the player is not able to see the whole route, since it gives the sense infinite and unexpected... but the fact that you made the route circular, with three different paths and random-spawning obstacles gives the same feeling even though you can turn the camera around while you are running (which is not so simple if you have to also see what's in front of you, and I like it).
In my opinion the camera movements are hard to control sometimes. Even though I'm used to high mouse sensitivity, I think the issue is the accelleration of the camera. During the first run I moved just a little my mouse and the camera was going really fast. Of course it could be only my problem since I've got high sensitivity on my mouse, but one last option with a mouse sensitivity slider in the settings would make the game more personal and unique for each player.
The UI curve is a really nice concept, it helps giving you the feeling of speed (even though it gives some troubles with the input detection) and makes the UI interesting. As plexsoup already mentioned, on higher speed some collisions are not so accurate, but I think it is just something you could work out having more time to test it on higher speed.

I'd like to see some other maps in the future, like 8-shaped or with different heights, but I'm sure you already planned something about it. Your game really has potential!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the detailed feedback, and I gotta say that I think you hit the nail on the head here. I agree with everything you said.

New kinds of maps and modes have been thought of indeed, I also want to implement multiple rings at different height that you can jump between. Have considered a straight way approach but it being the most common approach decided no to pursue the idea for the jam though I might implement it at a later date too. The minimalistic graphical approach would give nicely into it as well.

Mouse sensitivity accompanied with a Camera Smooth* slider are on my to do list, where the camera smooth slider would influence the speed of interpolation. These are also options I will expose in the pause menu as well.

Enjoyed a lot this runner! Sound and visuals are awesome, the feeling when at full speed is amazing. Great job!

Developer

Aw man! I was really going for an experience, super glad it paid off to a degree. With extra particle effects in front of the camera and constant (slight) camera shake the full speed will become even more satisfying.

That's a super fun endless runner game. AmaZing visuals and audio! Really impressive.

Felt good to cruise around the track.  I couldn't actually change my name for a few tries. The hitboxes are off or something. The hitbox on the tacks seems off too. Visually, I hit the tacks before my foot landed on them. (Not trying to nitpick, just thought you'd want to know.)

Great game!

Developer

glad you enjoyed playing it! The shader that curves the screen doesn't apply the same curve to mouse input and because of that all mouse button input events are moved off slightly. I put in a setting to turn off the curve in case people wanted to a more linear experience. Thanks for the feedback!
