Great action game, combat is really fun, though I've discover that spawning the jump-heavy attack (the one that creates a damage area on the ground, can be repeated constantly, allowing you to spawn that attack again and again to kill all the enemies around without needing to use other combos. Also, I found a glitch on the first big ape that casues him to stretch (dead already) at a constant speed :|

I'm no fan of the 'dot' shader's effect, but I really enjoyed playing this game. The fighting mechanics were very polished, I think. :) well done

The game is great. I loved the voice overs. The camera was very laggy and I missed most of the visuals due to it (For anyone wondering, it is not a computer issue as my computer is very good at running graphics and all that jazz). The camera moved way too much and as probably the thing that made me rate as I did. Another issue was the particle system. Very over done in my opinion, however I loved the graphics. Otherwise great game, I could definitely see this as a full release in the future.

Developer

Can you be more specific with what you mean as the "camera was very laggy" so I can look into it? Do you mean the dampening when you sprint?

Submitted

Laggy was a bad descriptor. It moved very jaggedly making it appear weird.

Developer

Interesting. The camera has smoothing applied to its following so that it moves as fluidly as possible behind the player. Are you referring to the camera shakes on impacts and while sprinting?

Submitted

No, not that

Developer

Can you describe in detail what happens so I can reproduce it, or send me a video clip on Discord (Alex!#3319)? Looking to patch this, planning on releasing a big patch with some fixes and new levels in a couple weeks.

This is really polished. The witty voice overs are great and the monkey has real character. I'm not familiar with the myth but someone with me told me it is accurate. Unfortunately, I had to stop in the tutorial at the sprint/slide bit as it's next to impossible for a left hander, (I had to fight the monkeys with no dodge as the E key is out of reach), but this hasn't stop me giving this big scores. Also, the mouse was slightly too sensitive for me so  an option to change that would help.

Developer

Thank you!

I didn't realize sliding would be hard for left handers - I'm left handed myself. The game has full controller support if you want to give it another shot with a control scheme that might be more suitable for you!

I use the arrow keys to move (with my right hand)  and the mouse in my left.  Only the left sided shift and control keys worked for the speedup and slide as far as I could tell. If both shift keys / control keys worked it would probably be sorted. A large percentage of the games submitted have neglected left hander support.

Overall (4/5): Finally got around to playing this, and was surprised at how complete it was. Great jam entry!

When I started the game, I wanted to break the pot that was near the ledge with the first pickup. I was disappointed I couldn't do that. *insert laugh*

Gameplay (3/5): This was hard for me to rate. On one side, there were clearly some great things going on. An amazing array of attacks, sprint, sliding under things, pickups! On the other hand, this game absolutely triggered my motion sickness. The tunnel vision applied on the sprint was nauseating, and the attacks didn't quite connect for me. I felt like the movement system was both good and clunky at the same time.

Graphics (4/5): Lovely jump and idle animations. That foot tapping! I felt the particle effects were a tad overdone, and I had trouble seeing depending on how I was being attacked, but otherwise, it was absolutely lovely!

Audio (5/5): Voice acting was great! I felt that depending on how you played it though, the running commentary arrived late/early, or was abruptly cut off by the tutorial screens. Just a nitpick, but havin the voice acting run depending on the player's actions would be nicer.

Thematic Relevance (5/5 )and Historical Accuracy (5/5): I felt it was a unique piece of mythology to build on. Good job there!

Developer

Thank you! Sorry to hear about to motion sickness :(

You actually can destroy the pot at the start - you can destroy all of the pots and they release enough pickups to almost fill your healthbar. Unfortunately, there is a bug where light attacking them doesn't break them, but if you heavy attack, throw your staff, or ground pound, they'll shatter into a million pieces dynamically.

Wow, I'm surprised at how much this game achieved in only a week! This is probably the most involved combat I've seen in a jam game and for the most part it felt fluid and pretty polished. The only issues I had with it is sometimes when throwing his staff Wukong would stop in his attack animation. Also it's either impossible or just really hard to break vases with the weak attack.

The enemies are fun to fight and have some abilities I did not expect from a jam game. The graphics and animations are very nice, though I did also experience lag in the temple area. My suggestion would be maybe just have less torches and particle effects.

And something that may improve performance and make movement easier is deleting bodies much sooner after death in the arena. My character kept getting flung around by corpses after the first couple waves.

Overall though this was great! And I always like voice acting in a jam game, really ups the production value.

Great work!

That was fun! Fighting the big gorilla was pretty intense! Sadly my wooden pc couldn't handle the dungeon level. The witty exchanges between the narrator and the MK are excellent! Would love to see more!

Developer

Thank you! There's a level select if you want to skip to a less slow level. The dungeon has a lot of particles and lights, so it's admittedly quite heavy, even though i did what I could (baked lighting etc)
