Description
You can also listen to the soundtracks here: https://play.reelcrafter.com/Andy_Lin/The-Death-Knight-from-Another-World-Works-at-a-Convenience-Store

I chose the text "The Death Knight". Instead of a made up game concept, I created a made up Anime story (sorry) and as such created a music menu around the Anime story to compose towards. Originally, I planned to compose 9 soundtracks but due to school I completed 7. At least I completed all the "important" soundtracks.

Made up Anime title: The Death Knight from Another World Works at a Convenience Store / 異世界からデスナイトはコンビニではたらく

Synopsis: The magical continent Lardo, was ruled by the Shadow One and his army of Death Knights. Using fear and brute force, he brought the entire continent to their knees and everyone lived in fear, that is, until a hero emerged and vanquished the Shadow One, wiping out his entire army. Gul, Commander of the Death Knights, fled using a teleportation crystal, only to end up in a land of tall buildings, moving machine animals, and no magic?

3 years later, Gul, former Commander of the Death Knights, finds himself behind a counter at a convenience store. Working 10 hours a day, selling groceries, heating up fried chicken and sleeping in the attic of the store. Join Gul in his everyday life working in a convenience store as he deals with boredom and other worlders looking for him.

Made up Anime Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Slice of Life, Action

Soundtrack Concept/Inspiration: Some of the soundtracks were inspired by Anime such as Overlord, The Devil is a Part Timer, Re;Zero and The Saga of Tanya the Evil. However, I tried not to take heavy inspiration, listening to their music 1-2 times before never listening to them again through the duration of this jam due to fear that I might end up copying what the composers did instead of what I personally would do. The soundtracks is mostly orchestral with a few electronics and band instruments. I wanted to create a diverse list of soundtracks that showcases tension, laid back and action.

DAW: Cubase 12

VST/Sample Library used: Spitfire Audio BBCSO Pro, Original Rare Flutes, Original Epic Choir, Original Cimbalom, Original Pads, Albion Colossus, Spitfire Labs, Abbey Road Percussions

Preface: I didn't give myself enough time before the deadline to properly look at your submission other than listening twice.

I didn't read your submission first and then I realized what I was like "wait is this for an anime..??" so that was funny!

Have you studied dungeon meshi and kaijyuu number 8 OSTs?

Love the vibe with Knight of Death at the Convenience Store just like Kale said.

I like Tracked Down and Whisper Of E the most.

I guess my main impressions from this is that some of the songs feel a little busy, and I think either adding some tracks that have less total instruments would be cool, for when you need the slower moments in a story. I'm very biased in this opinion but maybe some bowed double bass would be cool? Especially with the "Deathknight" theme and orchestral composition.

Developer (1 edit)

I am happy that my music gave you the impression that it was for an Anime without you reading the submission.  It's my dream to become an Anime composer in Japan's Anime industry however I still have a long ways to go (I have actually privately met and spoken with a few Anime composers before, such as Masaru Yokoyama and Evan Call).

I haven't seen Kaijyuu Number 8 before but I have seen Dungeon Meshi, really enjoyed the Anime.  Haven't had the time to sit down and listen to the OST intently though.

Originally there was suppose to be 9 tracks, the 2 that didn't make it were suppose to be less instrumentation and more chill/daily life like.  But because of school they never made it plus they were on a lower priority.  I always give each soundtrack on the list a high to low priority, focusing on the higher priority first and making my way down to lower priority.  But I appreciate the feedback and will take what you said into account if I ever do decide to finish the 2 remaining tracks or for any future soundtracks.

Story from Lardo

Nicely composed. It is well mixed. I think the next step for you is to make some of the orchestration sound a little more organic, trying to get those articulations nailed down a bit so that they sound less like they're midi. I think maybe the vibe is a little bit

Gul Contemplation

I like the harp! I think I would try to adjust the velocity here a little - so many midi harps sound too harsh at too low of a velocity. Also, I would try to roll those initial chords a little more.  This one is also well composed and has a nice vibe.

Knight of Death at the Convenience Store

This is definitely pretty funny! I can picture the slapstick of this. I like what you do with the flutes compositionally here. It's definitely got a little bit of that cinematic impressionism.

Warming up the Fried Chicken

The plucked instrument here I think sounds a little harsh and would better if it was just a little smoother. I'm not sure if that's a limitation of the VST you're using or if the velocity is maybe a little high. The sound is appropriate - it's just a bit on the hash side. This is also a really fun one.

Tracked Down

This one is really nice. I think because it also doesn't have some of the same issues as the other MIDI stuff with its slower attack time (usually messing around with the attack makes it easier to make MIDI stuff sound good, and with a controller with velocity, this definitely helps. This track has a really cool effect.

"Evil" vs. Evil

I think this also could use a little bit more power and presence in some sense. I think the mix here is a little narrow and dry. More variance between near and far, and more

Whispers of the Shadow One

This is a cool composition. I want more development on the second recurrence of the melody. I think development is the big thing that I want to hear here. More development and swelling. It's a cool motif you wrote here for sure, and I definitely want to hear more.

Overall I think there's a lot of creativity, and it was easy for me to find a lot of good things and constructive things to say about this track, which means you did a lot.

Excellent work, and thank you for submitting! I hope to see you in future jams, and I'm really curious to see how you develop as an artist.

Love the switchup in "Evil" Vs Evil with the piano coming in.

Can totally hear the anime influences, you especially nail that slice of life "characters just doing random stuff" quirky style.

Great work!

I really liked your idea. Its a different and really nice approach for the jam theme. I can imagine this anime you narrate and I would be intrigued to watch it. The tracks are professionally excecuted and reflect your story perfectly.

Amazing tracks, you put a lot of time and effort and it shows—these are all ready to be used in a game. My most favorite track is "Evil" vs Evil.

Solid amount of work, very creative idea to go for an actual anime. Very diverse tracks also. Tracked down is my favourite, well done.

I was instantly drawn to the title and your approach. It's refreshingly unique and humorous, and you really make use of the entire orchestral palette. Thank you so much for sharing your work—fantastic job! So far, this is my favorite entry
