Description
A video game soundtrack inspired by hard rock and metal from groups like Crush 40, Blue Oyster Cult, and Baroness.

The bass, guitar, and vocals are recorded by me, as well as all the production. The guitar solos on "Death" is by my friend @mastersimrad ( https://mastersimrad.itch.io ), the drums are Splice loops.

I thought a rock soundtrack would set me apart from other entries and fit with the heavy, hardcore aesthetics of the theme and image.

Death:
This track I thought would be really fitting as a track for the title screen or even for like a final boss battle with Death himself. It was hard to get the levels right with all the screaming and distortion, but I think I got pretty close (though maybe the vocals are little too "in your face" for a video game).

Lyrics for "Death"
The knight of Death, he approaches you
Your stolen time caught up to you
Every moment, every minute, every day
All you sow, Death will come take it away

Your hold on life, it is loosening
And His cold embrace now seems welcoming
All your effort, all your effort was in vain
So follow Death, and escape from all your pain

Steppes:
This is what I imagine a level theme for the game could sound like. I see it almost as a cross between Sonic Adventure 2 and Hades. My favorite part is near the end where the guitar plays 5 notes over a 4/4 rhythm, and it's got a really cool feel with the introduction of congas and the bass doing fills.

End of Time:
I didn't realize when I was making it but this song has a perfect transition from the last one. I think this would be an excellent song to hear in a section of the game where time has frozen, maybe as some sort of time stop mechanic or cutscene, or just as a menu or a pause screen.

Heh! This is going to be a very challenging review to try to get in the space of this genre and bring feedback. And, the feedback I'm leaving is definitely just to give you what I think is the gap between where you're at and what the musicians of that time achieved - which is a lot.

Overall, the execution of achieving that 70s psychedelic rock sound is really very good. I think some of it maybe got a little repetitive, like some of it needs more development (you know, because I'm looking for what's the gap between you and artists of that era, but you've done a phenomenal job of capturing that sound).

In some places I feel like you're kind of flirting with that sort of mystical, psychedelic sound as well, but it's like it's not quite taking me quite all the way there. I compose from a pretty mystical place a lot of the time, so when I hear the music of that era, it definitely speaks to that .

I think you could pronounce the words more clearly as well. This is one of those cases where it's easy to get caught in the trap of emulating a style but where its a little slurred, so you can accidentally overdo the slurring. Like, Jimi Hendrix was actually articulating pretty clearly if you pay attention, even though it is stylistically slurred. I'd rerecord it with more annunciation and then dial it back - and definitely make sure you're using your voice and not trying to sound like anyone else. That's the only way to make it actually work for you.

5:14

This phrase could be more clearly articulated. Getting that articulation right is really key for this kind of melody - it still sounds kind of slurred to my ears.

I think overall, the subtle thing I'm noticing is that I think in a lot of places you're kind of over-slurring the music to fit the style, but when you actually listen to a lot of the music from that time, it's actually very tight while *feeling* very loose, like the drugs they were taking was loosening them up while simultaneously making them play very tight, if that makes sense.

You've done a very good job here in general - I leave these reviews to be of service to your development as an artist.

Since i did the per track write up on your last jam submission, I'll do the same for this one 😄.

Death:

The saturation/distortion on vocals was a great choice, really adds a lot to the vibes!

Bit of a Master of Puppets vibe with short just the drums and guitar harmony part

Steppes:

Those little conga/bongo fills were great!

The stereo stuff with the guitars was also a nice touch.

End Of Time:

Love all the textures/sound fx made with the guitar, adds a lot to the vibe.

Like you mentioned this really feels like a menu tune or maybe a sort of "not in combat" track.

I didn't go back and listen to your last submission to check, but I feel your production skills improved a lot from the last one.

I used to listen to a lot of old blues rock and heavy metal so this was really fun to listen to.

Good job on these (and to mastersimrad for the solos 😉)!

I don't think i've heard someone ever do 70's rock for a jam, this is absolutely very unique even for an 11 min track it all sits well, props, good job.

WOW this is so cool +++++

Personally, this right up my alley! The heavy-ness of these tracks fit perfectly for the theme!

It was very unexpected and extraordinary!

This is great, I never expected to hear this kind of music for this kind of theme. It’s awesome though! It kinda makes me picture Death as having gotten sick of following orders and decided to get an old Cadillac and drive through deserts drinking at dive bars (I mean that as a total compliment btw!) the vibe is so good. maybe he’s out there collecting lost souls or something, and you’re last on his list :o that’s the vibe of feeling, nice work! 👍🏽
