This is gold! I hadn’t realised that about the expression slider, it sounded like it was just affecting volume so I ignored it, but I guess It’s kind of affecting Gain..? and velocity in a way, that makes it more useful!

I have a midi keyboard but mostly use it to hear chords and notes rather than play them (I have limited finger position and music theory knowledge). I’m in the early stages of learning keyboard/theory though so I played with recording from it last night and really liked the result! felt so much more natural, the playing but also the playback (and way more intuitive than manually adjusting velocity in the DAW). I can imagine how it would help with giving things space in a mix.

Thanks for the taking the time on the advice and feedback, I really appreciate it and it’s already helped 👍🏽.

I did have a question about reverb though. With this kind of mix would you have reverb on each instrument trying to mimic it’s position in the room? Or would you touch up the reverb on them just relative to each other?

Thank you so much for the feedback. Great suggestion on using the volume to adjust attack time. I hadn’t thought of that and am not sure how to adjust attack in BBC orchestra otherwise 👍🏽

Mixing is definitely something I’m still new to. It’s definitely it’s own skill and my ears aren’t properly trained to it yet. Thanks for the suggestions though, helps give some direction to experiment and learn!

Thank you! I often struggle knowing where to take a track (breaking out of loops) so actually writing it down and imagining really helped me put this one together!:D

Thanks so much for listening! :)

This was great, a really well rounded listening experience with some really atmospheric and haunting melodies (but beautiful also!) it’s nice having the background of your approach and the inspirations as well. Very cool that distinguishing the live instruments from VSTs isn’t an easy thing to do in this track 👍🏽👍🏽

This track nails atmosphere! It feels like a place I’m in rather than just a song I’m listening to. I liked the chord progressions and instrument choices throughout carrying different vibes and intensities. Really nicely done!

Cool! I love how many ideas you managed to fit into one track and how well you transitioned through each one without anything feeling out of place. It covered a range of moods and every element kept changing to fit the new vibe. Really cool and obviously a lot of work gone into creating it. Loved the woodwind flourishes too. Really nice work 👍🏽

Nice, I think you nailed the intention you were going for. The first half definitely feels like an atmospheric exploration track that would go well with different settings. The last half as well sounds like it would go great with a bad guy introduction and maybe they break down their master plan while the music builds and they both hit their final form by the end. Really cool 👍🏽

I like how it came full circle through the three sections, and had a consistent sound to tie it together. Nice to have the context going into it too :). My only suggestion is that it could have maybe some more energetic sections, or maybe sections with a few more instruments or sounds to make it feel more dynamic. Nice work 👍🏽

This is great, I never expected to hear this kind of music for this kind of theme. It’s awesome though! It kinda makes me picture Death as having gotten sick of following orders and decided to get an old Cadillac and drive through deserts drinking at dive bars (I mean that as a total compliment btw!) the vibe is so good. maybe he’s out there collecting lost souls or something, and you’re last on his list :o that’s the vibe of feeling, nice work! 👍🏽

I loved this! It was really cinematic and professional sounding, lots of things happening but it felt balanced throughout. I really like the orchestral soundscape with the ‘modern’🤷🏽‍♂️ hits and synth sounds. Gave me real ‘metal gear solid 2’ theme song vibes, which is awesome. Nice work! 👍🏽

That’s great! Awesome epic boss vibes, I can imagine it really clearly, and it has plenty of space in the mix for SFX and ambient sounds. Really nice build ups throughout as well. I really enjoyed it 👍🏽

Really cool, I liked the foreboding but also kind of pensive and sad vibe that comes and goes throughout. The progression and transitions are really nice and I liked the subtle woodwinds! Nice work! 👍🏽

Really felt the theme come across, the tracks created a good atmosphere with a bit of spookiness to them and a melancholic’death is in the room’ vibe. Nice work!

Nice and mellow, I like how it isn’t flooded with instruments. The bass is very jazzy like it wants to wander around haha, that’s a vibe. Only suggestions, I think maybe a bit of reverb or saturation could help create some more dynamics, or maybe playing with the velocities to make it feel a bit more natural. Nice work!

This is cool, it does have an experimental vibe but it’s also really coherent as a song and creates and carries a consistent and immersive vibe throughout. It’s sort of dark, sneaky and a little foreboding. Really professional sounding and it’s great to hear you picked up some new techniques along the way, looking forward to hearing more in future jams!

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it :)

Thank you, yea long notes actually had the bonus of making the sounds easier to work with and creating a dark ambience at the same time. Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate that, I wasn’t sure how strict the rules were so I went safe with category B 😆

Awesome track! there was so much happening but it all felt so considered and intentional, it was clear you went in with a plan and it paid off so well. I loved all the panning of different elements that just kept surprising me, before my attention came back to the rhythm and lead elements doing something else cool. I think that’s my best description for it, just really cool! and so cool that you played live recordings and used field recordings. Great work!

Nice! I liked how it felt really clean, like there was a clear focus on one instrument at a time but also a build up over time that kept it dynamic and interesting with plenty to listen out for. Really fun to listen to. I liked the drum rhythm as well. great work! :)

That was really interesting, it has this sense of longing and melancholy but over this lofi vibe with those really nice reversed trills and the ambient sounds throughout. like someone looking out a window thinking about something they lost. that’s a lot of feels for a nice compact song, great work!!

Thanks so much for your feedback! you’re bang on! it’s an 808 being played in reverse into another reversed form so the sound actually hits in the middle and then dissipates out each way. so glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the encouragement, definitely keen to join more jams, the community has been so interesting varied and positive towards each other :)

Thank you, really glad I joined it’s been great hearing so many takes on the theme and people’s awesome ideas! thanks for the feedback, cool to hear people’s ideas on what kind of games and genres the track would work with :)

Thanks so much! Thats what I was hoping for and had a couple of versions before I was happy with one that was subtle to my ears but kept the vibe and atmosphere consistent. Cheers! :)

Thanks so much for the feedback. I found it quite challenging finding sounds I liked and wanted to experiment with so i stripped it back and went for the vibe instead. thanks again, great to hear you enjoyed it!

Cheers! yea the vocal is a choir VST but that particular note just sounded so low and menacing I had to keep use it once I heard it haha. Glad you liked it :)

Thank you! The bass was the first thing that properly sank into place and set the tone for the project for me, felt right :). glad you liked it!

This was nice, there’s sort of a childlike joy and sense of play to it. reminds me a bit of the piano from the “peanuts” show I think. But then it has this ominous build up in reverse that sounds quite cool on its own. i Think a nice bass tone would have helped fill out the song in reverse but otherwise if enjoyed the track :).

This was just really beautiful. such nice ambience and so nicely balanced in the mix. A really nice flow to each piece that works brilliantly to just listen to but also makes me imagine i’m playing a beautifully presented thoughtful game like Gris or something similar. Loved it, great work!

A lot of variety and solidly produced and mixed tracks for such a short time, super impressive and they sound very considered. I like how you change up the vibes and instruments used to keep the rhythm going for each track and the guitar did sound really unique and had a lot of personality when played in reverse. Very atmospheric and immersive sounding tracks that would sit nicely in the background and really compliment a scene in a game. Nice work!

Solid track! such a roller coaster to listen to all the instruments pop but it was so nice how they transitioned so smoothly into each other and never really felt abrupt or unnatural. was like listening to a live band riffing off each other. some strong “King Crimson/Mars Volta” Vibes in the runs that I really liked. A really unique take and song , I really liked it!

I really liked the guitar at the start it had a partially Spanish sounding flair to it that set the boss theme up really well before the tempo kicked in to back it up. I liked the melodies throughout but I did feel that in the reversed half it did lose some of the nice tonality and punchy drum rhythm that you set up in the first half. I did think it was mixed nicely though and the context you added really helped to imagine the scene. nice work!

The setup is just cool to look at, like you’re making musing on a space station. It’s really cool to watch your creative process through the video, feels really genuine and creative and intuitive. I have no frame of reference for how this kind of creation and performance comes together so it feels like watching a musical magic show haha. Very atmospheric and groovy vibe.

This was brilliant! every track so solidly fleshed out and big, but full sounding. Very professional sounding and I’m so impressed that you managed to put this much together in such a short time frame. Great work, I can hear this in games and movies for sure!

Thank you! Glad you liked it 👍🏽

Nice, it’s my first time in a jam too and I had similar thoughts on what I wanted to make. Ended up also going with something more intentional and to the point! It’s worked really well for you here! The piano shines really nicely without having too much to compete with and the track still has nice interesting dynamics to keep it from feeling flat. Nice work!

I agree, smooth is a good way to describe this. Like it has a great range of dynamics but also the melody sits on top really nicely. It actually gave me 80s action movie vibes, and a touch of “this will destroy you” vibes when the guitar had a little less distortion. Cool track!

Could I ask what guitar that was? (If it was a vst?)

I agree, it had a very calming effect for me. I picture it as maybe playing over credits, or maybe while walking through a village at night. just a really pleasant vibe. and then in reverse it definitely has that through the looking glass vibe sort of wildly different but vaguely familiar. Nice work!

That was a lot of fun, I really like the panned elements popping and ticking in the background, nice ear candy. definitely has a nice looping feel that could sit pleasantly in the background of a puzzle/platformer. solid work!

Really cool! I like how coherent it stays even through the reversed sections. it’s also really playful, like it actually sounds like you had fun making this haha. really nice to listen to :)
