Did you work in a team?
We were 2 people:
- tducasse, code, music, sound effects
- mauricet, pixel art and animations
Was the resolution a challenge?
The amount of details that we can put in a 64x64px screen is very limited, so we had to adjust both the level design and the pixel art to make everything fit!
What did you learn?
I tried a framework I didn't know before, Love2d, and it was a lot of fun! The only bad point was the web export, since itch.io doesn't really support SharedArrayBuffers, I had to export using an older version, and it's not 100% bug-free...
Also, it was our first collaboration together, and I'm really happy with the result! I'll definitely try to do more collaborations in the future 😀

good job! When i got hit it killed my sound for some reason :D
ah yeah… were you playing the web version? Somehow it doesn’t work really well, it seems like things eventually break after a while. The windows version is fine though!
It was the web version and yea it happens!
Wow, Nostalgia hitting pretty hard right now. Love it!
This game is awesome, I loved it!
It does loose some points in authenticity because it isn't pixel-perfect- it does use a 64x64 canvas but there's smooth movement and sub-pixels!
Still, I love how you were able to capture the feeling of Metroid with such low-resolution sprites!
Thanks for playing!
By subpixels, do you mean that because of how I handled the movement, where it’s not constrained to the 64*64 grid, as in sometimes the character might be at 32.5 or something?
Yeah! (I don't know if sub-pixels is the correct term or not but it's the one that came to mind.)
This has been debated a bit in the past since it does break the 64x64 limit a bit, because it *technically* isn't a true 64x64 canvas, but I'm not as strict as some may be on that front! I still think it's a pretty rad game :)
ah right, cool! I guess it definitely can be counted as subpixels, I totally didn’t realise this was happening, but it completely makes sense, I didn’t clip it to full integers.
I think at the time I was more interested in making it look smooth and I forgot that it was a “sort of, it depends” restriction 😂
Thanks for noticing and explaining 👌
