Skull mode make a great and innovative gameplay feature (additionally to looking funny)! Very nice idea!

The jumping didn't feel quite right  for me and could use a bit improvement in my opinion. But the hilarious death animation made up for it every time i jumped into the spikes 😂 (Fun fact, had a pretty similar idea for the death animation in my game Bone Runner for another game jam a few months ago).

Congrats to this nice entry! :)

So cute!! I died twice immediately and couldn't stop laughing-- love the death animation, too :D

I really liked the way the upgrades integrate into the movement, and they felt really good to play around with!
The attack felt a bit weak and unresponsive, so that could be polished a bit. I liked the bosses, and the final boss was a nice way of closing the game.

The platforming also sometimes felt a bit too tight, almost like you weren't supposed to be able to reach some places and you bugged your way up there.
But overall an enjoyable game, good job!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback!

I iterated on the attack many times, and wasn't super happy with it in the end either. But believe it or not, it used to be a lot worse! lol.

I had some complaints about the platforming similar to what you said too, with more time I would have adjusted it.

Great game for a first jam, and in only 40 hours. Really impressive. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see your future entries.

Developer

Thank you so much! Really motivates me to give it another go in the future!

this is really good for a first jam

rolling around in skull mode was satisfying

i liked the effect of the bones following you

would suggest a longer song loop

it can also be difficult to avoid taking hits from enemies that come at you quickly.

some bugs i noticed:

trouble getting through gaps sometimes. this includes larger gaps meant for walking through but i noticed the most common solution for the small ones is that you can only use the boost you get from switching to skull mode (jumping doesn't work for some reason)

flying enemies stick to your head frequently

during the triple boss fight there was something pushing me when trying to jump from platform to platform on the top of the arena

also the teleporting from hitting spikes would always result in me getting hit again

also got stuck in the ceiling once

the cloud background isn't supposed to be repeating vertically

Thanks for your very detailed feedback!

I'm glad you liked skull mode, it is my favorite part of the game too!

The short song wounds me too, but it was the last thing I did before the deadline. I would have loved to have done more with it.

The gaps that you have to switch to skull mode to enter was intentional to force the player to think more laterally with mechanics, but maybe it's not obvious enough.

I am aware of the flying enemies sticking to the head issue, but wasn't able to fix it in time sadly.

And the final boss fight invisible collision thing was annoying me so much, but I never found out what it was. There's nothing there when I'm debugging. No idea, lol.

And the cloud background was also one of the last things I did. It was included in a tileset I was using and better than nothing (before the background was just green), but I know it's not how they're intended to be used.

Interesting level design with choices and twists. Nice looking sprite for the main character, good music. Skull mode is adorable!

For an game region of this size, a map would be really helpful.

Also, in my opinion, the little devil-heads are a little too tough to be the most basic enemy type. It makes it very hard to traverse a 3-screen area without suffering any damage.

Lastly--this is a small thing, but the attack animation of the main character doesn't look very aggressive. It almost looks like he's laying out a tablecloth. :)

Developer(+1)

I actually laughed out loud about the tablecloth thing. I can definitely see it!

My wife kept saying she wanted a map too, so I would probably have added one with more time.

I feel like the biggest issue with the basic enemy is that there's a bug where they move toward you instead of away if you hit them from behind. I get hit by that a lot too, but it's not supposed to be the case.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed my little skull

I liked playing your game! This head only mode (sorry, forgot the name :D) is really engaging! At this magician boss, firstly I jumped on a left platform and was thinking: "ha! Fire cannot touch me! I outsmarted creator!". And after a while I realized I had to reach other side to attack the magician :D

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you liked my Skull Mode™ (at least we both knew what you were talking about).

And about the wizard fight, I can see you just standing there in triumph, only to slowly realize he's not coming back, lol.

Thank you for playing!

Developer

Hey, this is my first entry in a game jam. I hope somebody gets some enjoyment out of it. The platforming gets harder as the game goes, but I promise every jump is doable with some creative use of game mechanics! Happy Gaming!

ps. I added a critical bugfix after the deadline that was causing the game to crash on death in some cases.
