You pick up fish in one shot (and the fisherman quits for the day) & you die immediately if you collide with a fisherman.

How was your experience with Mini Jam?
Uhh, it was exhausting honestly. I work full-time & I've never done this before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I think I made too much for 72 hours. Not to mention one of those days was a work day. But hey, I learned a lot.

The game was amazing!! Loved the overall concept of the game the assets were amazing<3

Good luck with the jam I hope you like other games in the jam too<3

This is a cool result, especially for your first game jam!  The visuals do the job well and the concept is fun.  I was gonna mention the controls, but you and others have already mentioned it feeling a little tricky and in need of some fine-tuning, so I'll just raise my hand and say that I ran into similar issues too, haha.

Otherwise, there's not much I can add that everyone else hasn't already said by the looks of it.  Solid work!! :D

oh damn! I don't believe it, this is an awesome first jam. The camerawork is great, and I can't believe you made all the assets on your own, they look awesome and there's so much beautiful detail in it.

I was in a similar place 5 jams ago, having been a long term programmer who hadn't had an achievable goal to complete a Unity project with. Jams are the best for this, welcome to the club! Hope to see more from you.

Thanks for the kind words!  I definitely had fun.  One of the things I definitely learned was that it's sort of less about the art quality and almost about the art quantity.  Like, I'm no "art guy", but every time I added one more thing, the game just looked soooooo much better, which is something I've never really done before & appreciated.  In any case, thanks again - I'll jump over and check your jam out later today!

To us it's a nice experience! Congrats for your first game!

Thanks! :D

Very impressive for your first game! I enjoyed a lot of this little seagull's life. Well done!

Developer

Thanks so much!  Cheers

one of my favs from the jam to far

Developer(+1)

Wow.  That's a really high compliment, I genuinely appreciate it!  Thanks so much for playing <3

Wow I love all the models for this!! And the concept too; it was fun flying around even if it was slightly frustrating at times

Developer(+1)

Haha thanks!  And I agree, the flying can be super frustrating at times.  Something I'd improve if I were to revisit it :)

Felt pretty cool to dive bomb a fisherman and snatch his livelihood away. Reviewed live at https://www.twitch.tv/scalphamission

Thanks for taking on a look on your stream!

Thanks!  First time round so I'm definitely happy with how it came out.  Still not sure if I'll do another one... trying to figure out the "point" lol.  The whole jam was pretty hard tbh

Haha yeah, I guess I mostly just feel like I already knew what I learned?  If that makes sense.  In any case, it is definitely a good exercise, it's just hard to quantify / qualify.

Good visuals, I can't say why but I had a harder time than i 'd thought with the controls

Also got stuck in level 2 as I found only one fish and somehow got past the invisible wall to the right

Last thing I think seagulls wouldn't mind picking up a fish that dropped on the ground (that could've helped me at least)

Developer

Yeah, I've had the same experience w/ games that have similar controls, but ultimately I enjoyed them, hence me _trying_ to replicate them in the jam.  The boundary stuff is definitely broken, sorry about that.  And hell yeah, something I meant to add was picking fish back up, but alas, the timer reached 0. :P

Love the visuals! And the explosion on death is hilarious. Great job!

Developer

I really enjoyed added that particle system, not gonna lie :P

Random notes:

* I mentioned this elsewhere in the comments, but the movement was supposed to be a lot more weighty / gravity based for more fun.

* I'm realizing as I play other peoples games (and thus learning it about my own) that I should have made it so that the user never has to touch the mouse.  e.g. menu movement via arrow keys/wasd w/ right to continue or something, etc.  Makes it so you can get in the groove better.

* There's really not enough time to do anything.  I think next time I'd just spend all my time on the mechanic (in this case weighty flying) & then maybe try to backfill a game...

Submitted(+1)

That was fun, I completed all the levels. I liked the movement even though it took me a second to understand.

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing!! I'll take a look at yours now :).  Honestly, the movement was supposed to be "the" thing, but I spent essentially 0 time on it because I was so busy rushing to get everything done in time, which really bums me out, but I guess that's how jams go.

Yea, that’s the nature of the short time constraint. But the great part is you can always go back and focus on the parts you didn’t get to finish. I intend on doing exactly that for our game once the review period is over. :)

Developer(+1)

Does the engagement continue in your experience?   Like, if I were to update this demo, polish it a bit more (honestly it wouldn't take much), would it get any views / plays on itch?  I've never published anything before so I'd totally be down if it actually was played, but if I'm just yelling into the air that's no fun :P

To be honest, I don’t know. This is actually my first game jam. :) It probably depends on your marketing (or lack thereof). I can only tell you what I plan on doing, which is waiting until the end of the game jam, reviewing all of the collective feedback, and making small investments of time/money until it either takes off or I don’t think it’s worth it anymore.

My honest opinion is that this game would work well as a mobile game, probably with ads or a very low price. Add something that gives the levels variety and let people watch ads for extra lives, if you’re looking to monetize it. If you’re not, go wild and work on it when you want to. Keep your end goals in mind. If that’s employment in a studio, probably don’t spend too much time on this and think of your next portfolio submission. If you’re looking to start your own business (like me), consider your brand and what you want to highlight. If that focus is an extremely high-quality product, like what I want to eventually achieve, focus on this one and continue to polish this until you think it’s perfect. :)

The game is very good  but it took me a long time to understand the movement

Developer

Yeah, I really should have put some time into making the movement better / explaining but alas, ran out of time.  Taking a look at your game now :)

I wasn't able to get the fish. Wasn't sure what I was supposed to do. The flying around was fun, though, and I thought the graphics were cute!

Developer

Dang.  It's supposed to pick up the fish when you fly into them.  Wonder if I've got a bug or if my instructions are awful 😂.  Either way, thanks for playing!

Submitted

I wasn't able to fly into any fish. The only thing I saw that looked like a fish was always on the bottom left of the screen in a box, and I could never catch it.

Developer

That's ok, thanks for taking a look :).  Going to jump in to yours now
