Such a fun and creative game! Very cute lil ninja guy :)

Encountered a small error when the red spikes fell on me! Also i was unfortunate enough to be hit by Lord Mouth-s balls after a killed him, heard the music and all, but i was teleported back to the start with no music playing this time.

With this out the way, i have only a few things in mind:

  • More maps would be nice, but that’s a jam project for you
  • A better tileset would be nice. You can even keep this, just draw the other variation for the style, walls, cornes and such.
  • The theme was a strech but i can see it. It could be a bit better incorporated if you do something like in Trine, where you are 3 characters in one body and you can change from one to another!
  • If you refine the sprites a bit keeping the style this can be a real banger (as much as the music is!)

Axe feature is perfect, needs moooore levels! Great game!

Very neat Gameplay with a lot of potential!

Summary:

Adherence To Theme
  • It's a bit of a stretch. Maybe if you represent the player as this bundled up pack of 3 characters for comedic effect it would've been a bit clearer.
Game Design
  • The general platforming is very precise and snappy, feels great.
  • The Tomahawk mechanic is neat although there is not much of an incentive to use one move over the other, apart from the boss, more varied enemy design would be a welcome addition!
  • I liked the little puzzles that use the teleportation mechanic. They switch up the Gameplay quite a bit in a way that felt a bit like in the 2D Metroid titles, where you get new props in your arsenal and need to learn how to use them differently for new "puzzles". Neat!
Originality
  • Very Original idea. The sum of its parts make it stand out, not so much the individual mechanics. I love it!
Style
  • The music was bopping along quite well! The graphics are... Servicable. You can tell enemies and players apart, they stand out from the background and it is clear what is a hazard and what is a switch.
  • A bit of refinement would add so much to this and I'm not talking about "artistic" value here. For example making the Tileset a bit more varied, to look more pleasing around the edges. (There is a free version of "Tilesetter" which does exactly that, only using what you already have in your game. It's super useful for jams and full projects alike!
  • The blood effect was a cool addition to feel, however felt a bit over the top, so much so it might be distracting in a scene with more than 2 enemies.

Overall

Very addictive entry, I'd love to play a version with more than 4 screens!

Oh man this is great! Thanks so much for that thorough review!

I hope you could find something of use here. It's just my personal way of telling you my thoughts about your great design! Ofc. if you do draw some inspiration from that, I'd feel more than honored, but it's not necessary, as I'm just a learning designer myself :)

At first i was kind of irritated by the fact that i have to redo the same actions again after dying (sometimes i dont like such games), but man! It was amazing! I kept playing and I defeated lord mouth xD!
I like how there are different ways to kill the enemies and the teleporting feature is amazing
I liked speedrunnning through the level xD my best being 35 seconds! I liked the animation sounds, movement and all too

14:40 and 18:25 shows the winning runs :p

Awesome video! I'm so glad you liked it! That last run was excellent :D

Very nice gameplay ideas! Too bad it's so short ><, I'd like to play more :D

Developer

Haha me too! I'm planning to continue working on it and make it much longer. Thank you for playing!

Wel[, the gameplay is fun, the axe mechanic is awsome, and the music feel's just great!!! Amazing game!

Developer

Thank you for playing! I'm happy you liked it!

I really liked the mechanics of the axe. But I find the arrow keys to move unintuitive. WASD would work better for me.

Developer

Thanks for playing! What buttons would you use for axe mechanics instead of Z and X?

Submitted(+1)

Left mouse button for attack and right click for throw. Even if you can only hit left and right, I prefer the hand position with "WASD" and mouse. But that's probably just a personal thing of mine.

Great game! With a bit of thinking involved, loved it!

Thank you!

The axe throwing/teleportation mechanic is awesome! The movement and fighting also felt very good. I think with more polished art this could become a really good game. Good job!

Developer

Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it! I’m planning on spending the next month working exclusively on the art. Any thoughts on directions I should take?

I think the monochrome style with bright accent colors fits the game really well (Maybe also use some orange/yellow/green because blue and red are overused imo :D). Otherwise I would go with classic low resolution pixel art for everything (similar to "Downwell" for example).

Really creative mechanics!

Developer

Thank you sheriff!

Thank you so much!

Basicaly a 2D god of war with some teleportation :D I love it! Not sure if it really fits the theme but its a great game none the less.

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it! God of War was the main inspiration, with a little bit of Downwell and Katana Zero :)

Submitted(+1)

Oh yea downwell has some cool mechanics

Jam HostSubmitted(+1)

Really clever levels that make great use of the mechanic. Where the theme though?

Developer

Thanks for playing! It started as wanting to pack vikings, samurai, and ninja in the same game, so I added mechanics from all 3 in the one character. I guess I could also say you have the send Lord Mouth packing haha

Super cool mechanics !

Thank you!
