The menu is "playable" only to help you get used to the jumps before the game starts, but it's not supposed to be hard, isn't your setup in 120Hz by any chance ?
Hope you still could enjoy the game !
Final score : +93
So you basically took a lot of ideas some of us took 2 weeks to code and made them all ! Impressive !
The game is very enjoyable, every mini game has a coherent difficulty curbe, it's very nice !
The only problems I had were the watering plants game and the book tower. I lost waaaaay too much stability in both of them ; watering a plant made it bigger and sometimes, other plants were not accessible without rewatering the big one, losing 3 points as a consequence, and the book tower was just way too hard.
But in the overall experience, it's really not that big of a deal. You nailed it, great job !
Woops, almost forgot to comment !
I played the whole game while streaming to a friend, who happens to love bonsais and he was absolutely amazed by the concept.
The puzzle works, the levels are greatly designed, the music fits very well and is beautiful on its own : it's a superb submission of course, but it is a great game first.
The only problem I had personnaly, but that's just because I suck at puzzle games, is that I took a lot of information at once, but let's not forget it has been made in 2 weeks and you didnt have time to make three levels per tutorial step to give us time.
No, really, you nailed it, congratulations.
Thanks a lot for playing and for the feedback ! I appreciate it very much !
I did try to allow mid air jumping, mid air charging and even slow motion while charging on floor to add accuracy while the player was standing on a falling platform, but it felt entirely different from the final result. I did realize it was hard to time, but it only bothered me in the level with the camera following the player on the Y axis (which is why there is only one of theme), I didn't necessarily see the difficulty to time as a threat to enjoyment, as levels only require a few jumps ; did it frustrate you ?
Sadly, accessibility would have been the first thing I'd have improved if I could have used the bonus week time :/ Hope you still liked the music and didn't get sick of it because of the volume !
Congrats on your submission !
There are a few little things that could need a little more polish in terms of gameplay in my opinion. First, the camera should be way more to the left, as right now, half your screen is useless because it shows what you already went through instead of showing you what you're going to go through. Second, my guess is that you use move_and_slide() for movement, and check if you're on the floor with is_on_floor(). It would have been a good thing in your game to change the value of the floor_max_angle of the move_and_slide, to detect is_on_floor even when your character is on a 45° rotated platform ; that way you could jump when your platform is rotated and the gameplay would be way smoother.
Thank you for playing and commenting !
I did try twitching the jump speed for a few hours, but late, and had trouble setting it up so I had to go back to this version ! I even hesitated to allow the player to start charging the jumps while in air, but it wasnt coherent and I decided not to.
I appreciate the feedback :)
The concept is great, gathering ressources to build your shelter is fun, but sadly the lightning is way too much of a danger for a first night, and I cant pass it. I feel like there should be a pause button to build your shelter without pressure when the night falls, and maybe the dangers should be more and more intensity every night. For example, the first night could only be a little wind which would test the structure of your shelter.
Congrats on your submission !
Your tutorial is absolutely clear, but I dont see any new blocks appearing ; but I did find a Skip block, so I went for it and could play the game !
The flight physics are satisfying and make it a funny platformer, although it is hard to play with camera and birdie at the same time with the fragile leafs.
Also, my cat tried hunting the little bird, then fell asleep because of the music (piano does that to her).
While I agree about the tutorial not being crucial because of its limited content (relative to full sized game of course), I think it would have been a little more easy to get into if the death timer started after the first time you give fruits to the God ; it would have let people time to understand the goal and get used to the controls without explaining anything and holding their hands, which in my opinion would not negatively affect the experience
Amazing entry ; the game is gorgeous, the music fits perfectly, and controls are satisfying.
One little thing I had trouble with is identifying which fruit is which, had to randomly run into trees once, only to get the one I was looking for in a tree that was supposed to deliver peers ; but it may be me the problem here, I'm honestly not sure.
Congrats, the result of your work is very impressive !
I'm honestly very jealous I didnt think of this concept for the jam...
As simple as it looks at first, it makes you want to experiment and create differents types of structures, just for fun, and stress test them.
You could absolutely expand the idea and make a puzzle game, with a pre designed set of pieces to assemble for each level.
Congrats, it's one of my favourite interpretations of the theme for now !
Sadly didnt manage to get to the boss (I suck at top down shooters), will come later to try again when I'm done rating games, but it for sure is a very good submission !
The plutonium mechanic works pretty well, and I love the HUD representing it. It is a very good use of the theme.
Anyway, congrats !
The concept works, but the game lacks objectives, as getting higher and higher is possible by just stacking the same object over and over again ; but it could become a good puzzle game with designed levels which only give you a straight set of items to reach a certain height !
Congrats on your submission !
The game is beautiful, it must not have been easy to make in such little time ! The two music tracks are very good and fit the climb of a giant turtle (adamantoise ?).
I only had two issues while playing ; first, the speed seems to depend on the camera's position, which means your jumps differ depending of the angle of the camera, but I suppose it is just a little hic in the code. The second one is that the fallzone that brings you back to the last checkpoint isn't readjusted at the height of the latter ; which means when you fall from, let's say the third area, you can fall on a platform from the first, it slows the pace of the game because you have to jump by yourself in the void to tp to the checkpoint and if you're really unlucky (as I was) you can fall... directly on a previous checkpoint, activating it ! I wonder if you were gonna implement checkpoints at first, considering the name of the game ? It would have made a rage game.
Anyway, those aren't big issues. To The Beginning is impressive and is a great submission. Congrats for your submission !
