awesome game! but please enable the fullscreen toggle on the itch page.
took me two minutes to figure out to press enter to switch between control modes though, perhaps these modes could switch automatically as soon as you enter the upper part of the screen.
the first levels get a little repetitive without additional tools since options are so limited.
the start box could also be labelled.
i really love how the music has elements of a train chugging, it helps the vibe a lot.
for a jam game, all the levels could be unlocked from the start (is there a cheat to unlock them?) so that other levels could be played even if one or another could not be solved or weren’t super interesting. very nice entry though, would love to play more!

I've got a question : How do the intersections work?

I absolutely can't figure it out nor couldn't I even bruteforce as sometimes the trains do what I want but then I change the track further and then they don't anymore ;) .

As everybody said the NES feel is as high as it can get with this one.

This one?

You can use it to rotate the tracks depending on what you last pressed on the D-PAD (unless its the way you came from when you touched the track)

(spoiler alert: button tracks do not work like this)

Yes, thanks!

Let's see how far I manage to go.

Well ...

I had a lot of fun playing, the levels are diverse while all being real levels with some challenge, challenge which is perfectly balanced for the context, and once again this is served with perfect NES presentation.

See, THIS is what an NES game looks and feels like.  If NES Jam ever needed a demo, this game would certainly qualify.  If I could give 6 stars for the feel, I would!  This is easily in the top ten for how to do the jam right!

One problem I ran into was the controls were horrendously slow when I was trying to navigate the screen, making it a serious playability issue. The timer was also acting weird with the end going up about 3 or 4 a second. It is probably a problem on my end, but I don't know if this would impact anyone else.  If I were to take a guess on why this is happening, it could be related to how the game is being drawn on the screen.  I have run into similar issues with JS and trying to apply get and putimage data to convert graphics into an array, mod that array, then plug it back onto the canvas, but it requires a very unique set of circumstances (such as disabling vulnerable accelerators on an ancient web browsers).

I just played Track Engineer and the more I played it, the more I loved it. Sure, I struggled to understand what I was supposed to do inside the first level, and I even went to level editor not knowing how to build tracks. But as I played it more, I started to understand that I need to press start to first pick a track tile to place inside the level in less than the said amount. I also love how there is a level editor where players can make their own levels or tracks, if that's what the editor is for. In terms of the game's overall graphics and audio, they are superb. Although I was a bit annoyed repeatedly hearing that level completion sound effect or music that kept looping every like 2 seconds. But other than that, this game was really fun to play despite my initial struggles at understanding the game's objectives and how to actually play the game!

This games really feels like it was stolen from 1985, everything from the graphics style, the music and even the gameplay fits right at home with the NES. I must say though that the UI was very hard to understand at first and that the rail snaping was a little buggy.

Overall, this game is lots of fun !

Hey very good train puzzler! The control scheme feels intuitive for this kind of game and also gives it a really good old school feel. A minor bug I noticed was that the track pieces only snap to the correct orientation some of the time, although I found the placement more accurate when I held down the A button and placed the tracks in a path that way instead of pressing A for each individual track piece. Super charming game!

Absolutely amazing! Incredible NES feel, definitely feels like an old NES game. Unfortunately I couldn't find a possible solution for the 3rd level as there didn't seem to quite be a possible path from the right side to the end. There's almost a path around the top of the map, but since tracks need at least one straight track between each curve, I couldn't find a possible way to get to the rest of the levels, which is a shame as I would love to see them!

Developer

Actually, tracks don't usually need 1 straight track between each curve (except for U-turns), you can do this by deleting the tracks that aren't rotated and placing annother track in its spot

(note/spoiler: bridges don't support curved tracks)
