You managed to make a rthyum game and then a platfomer out of this jam ?? This is kinda awesome tho I want the platform to be easier.

I really love this game, it feels like the NES and DS had a baby since it's got kind of dual screen gameplay thing going on. I'm a sucker for games where you have to balance two tasks at once and this game does it masterfully. I did unfortunately hit a bug that did not allow me to complete the game though. After getting what is I assume the last band mate I hit a glitch that did not allow me to see what was next and it just looped back to the cutscene where you got them over and over. But still, what I was able to play was FANTASTIC. I really think you guys should continue working on this game and publish it once it's done, I'll be there day one if you do.
Thanks for playing!
Yeah, the cherry thing was a last minute bug that got missed, but you can skip it with shift+q to see the little bit left of the game that's there so far.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lots of work was put in, and I think the general group consensus is to have a bit of a breather for now.
So while I can make no promises on any dates, I can say that there's desire in all of us to take what we've made and finish off the bits that needed more time.
Graphically, it is beautiful, and as a good rhythm game, the music is a great aspect of the game. The gameplay is quite enjoyable, and combining the rhythm mechanics with a platformer is a very good and well-executed idea. Congratulations!
Loved the combo of the rhythm game with a story and platformer to boot! Nice entry. :D
Wow, amazing work!!! I feel like the soundtrack would be slightly cooler if it was like authentic NES chiptune, but it was really good anyways. The graphics are very well done, and I loved the "you've been juiced" detail :D
Thanks~
Very fair. I did toss around the idea of trying to do that with the sound, but quickly decided that it just wasn't feasible to do so.
As our main musician on the team had quite a lot on his plate already, what with us deciding to make a rhythm game of all things, the added restriction and the time it'd take to learn a program made for making it, making it sound good, and finishing it in time to set it to tracks so the rhythm part works with it....yeah ^^
Didn't want to stress him out that much.
Still I'm pretty darn pleased with the music he put into it, he learned a ton and it really showed.
It would be cool to have a toggle for a more true-to-NES chiptune, but I can't make that a promise as I can't speak for him and whether he'd be wanting to do that much extra work involved for the game.
Glad you enjoyed the music as in spite of the not true-to-console sound design though!
And yeah, that was a little touch of mine I just couldn't help but get added in. Makes me smile :)
This was one of my favourite jam submissions! Amazing for two weeks of work.
So far after playing Beat Beet, I actually like the gameplay, the artwork that was done to make this game, the music, the sound effects, and including the pause menu. It's a great idea to have a pause menu where you can modify the music and sound effect volume sliders, and going to the level select screen. Although, I don't know if I was supposed to win the tutorial challenge because I felt like I was mistiming my button press every time the notes come down on the guitar. And then I got transported to a platformer level. I love the fact that this game is an action-adventure platformer, with you trying to find some musicians and impressing them. Also, I feel like the platformer level is too difficult because I kept getting shot at by the submarine notes from below. Everything about the game has an NES style and feel to it, made me feel like I playing a real NES platformer game!
Very cool game, im surprised of how much content it has and the many platforming elements.
What a cool video game! The aesthetics are very beautiful, the idea of combining a platform game with a music one has delighted me, although it is a bit difficult to dodge things while you are focused on pressing the right notes… xD But still very enjoyable, you can tell that a lot of love has been put into it. I’ve struggled to progress, it’s a difficult game, and even more so for me as I personally hate jumping with the up arrow xD
Even with everything, a very beautiful experience, congratulations! ^^
Thanks so much for playing!
We had a lot of fun making it for sure.
I completely agree with the up-to-jump thoughts, I'm not huge on it either, but we felt swapping the dedicated jump button around outside of rhythm segments wouldn't be very intuitive overall.
Some time after the jam period is over, we'd definitely like to go revise the controls with less restrictions, and some more configurable options.
I had quitted but after reading your previous answer I restarted and Shift-Qed to the beet and beat the beet.
The game is excellent, I love it. It looks and sounds amazing, the structure and pacing are great and both the plateforming and boss sections are super fun, they're varied with perfect controls, speed, length and difficulty. Finally it could perfectly be a lost NES game.
That was awesome!! So many clever mechanics and twists and turns to the game. Really loved all of the close up portrait artwork. Nailed the NES art style!! Despite it being a pretty upbeat game, the dark shadows and black background gave the game an otherworldly, creepy and sinister vibe which was very interesting. I was waiting for some sort of dark twist in the story!
Had a great time playing. The music note duels in the boss fight stood out the most to me, that's such a cool concept!! I also really liked the level with platforms shifting to the music. Really great soundtrack throughout. Well done to everyone!!
(PS The ending got stuck once i got the cherry singer in the band. Not sure if that was a glitch or just the end of the game.)
Thanks for playing!
There's a bit more to the game, but that was an accidental glitch that was added into it. You can press shift+q to skip from there into the last part.
Story is still a bit of a work in progress as we couldn't fit in all we wanted to in the time limit, but hopefully we'll fine tune the rest sometime after the jam o/
This game is truly great, I love every aspect of it, music is great, art is spot on, gameplay is fresh and characters are brimming with charisma.
brilliant
The Kirby-esque art style in the platforming bits was so pretty, I loved the water! The platforming was a great twist, I lost rhythm section and was ready to go again but then I was a platformer suddenly. Overall solid blend of the two genres! Unfortunately the audio quality was really messed up (my machine, I’m guessing) which I know is like the core mechanic ;_; but I could still distinguish the beats so the potential behind this game is super evident.
