I loved the graphics; they are extremely similar to the original NES, and the music is the same, very well done and implemented. These are undoubtedly the game's strongest aspects.
What a cool game! I love the artistic aspect and the music fits perfectly. It was a challenge to complete it, but I did it! The difficulty is high, which I like, and with such short levels, it doesn’t feel bad to have to start over when you die, at least for me. The shuriken update is also great!
Some points that I would have liked to see are:
Even without these points, the result is a very fun game that undoubtedly reminds me of the NES games, congratulations! ^^
This game has some real standout stuff. The backgrounds are really good and the music is great. My biggest critique is the controls. It took me a little while to figure out Ctrl was to shoot. That and having space as jump just wasn't what i was expecting for an NES game. There is also a part in the second level where I dropped down to get some collectibles and there wasn't a way back up. Had to jump off and start the stage over. But I liked your game a lot and I can see you spent a good amount of time on this.
Definitely has some of the best presentation in this jam, hands down. The enemy collision is a little wonky though, I think it could be solved by putting the player and enemies on different collision layers. Pretty neat game though, I see the Ninja Gaiden influence pretty clearly!
I was going into this with rather high expectations, because the graphics here are very nice and NES accurate! However, the actual gameplay... isn't very good. The player character is rather frustrating to control, he has the physics of a bar of soap and slips off edges causing me to fall to my death. Enemy collision isn't very good either, I got softlocked on a wolf and had to restart the game. Getting hurt doesn't really feel like it hits either, you kinda just bounce off it (or collide with it like it's a wall). Wasn't a huge fan of the music either, rather barebones, sounds like there's only two channels being used.
Overall, quite disappointed with this one, there is room for improvement though, it's mainly the physics that bring this one down
Thank you for your comment!
I did spend a considerable amount off time working to make the game look like an NES game, but it is unfortunate that this led to disappointment for you. In any case, thank you for playing my game, I really appreciate it!
Ayy no problemo!
I completed the game, it's funny that the boss fight is in the middle of the game instead of at the end.
The game is fun, depsite a few weird things like when you're on top of an enemy overall it feels pretty good to control and I thought the difficulty was perfect for a jam with the right amount of precision jumps in each level. The visuals and sounds are also super appropriate, I like the music, the character you play and the background with bamboos.
Note that in my resolution (1920x1080) the top of the screen with the info is hidden but as it does not prevent from playing the game in any way then it doesn't matter.
Thank you for the comment!
The mid-game boss is pretty funny, I had originally intended to do a palette swap second boss at the end of world 2, but I really didn't spend the time on this project that it deserved. In fact, the second world was only finished a few hours before submission. I'm glad you enjoyed playing it, especially the graphics as that is what I spent the most time on. Thank you for playing my game!
