Description
Videogame Soundtrack Based off of an NES Game. I imagine Its an RPG. I think.. I just made what I felt like. I made the main theme, and built off from there. I based it off of my hometown and what its like living by the ocean. (I used the white noise as cool ocean wave noises it was cool)

Most of the tracks are self explanatory. the ocean theme is just the main theme, File select is the file select, your home is the indoors theme, Outside is the town theme, The shore is the theme that plays when your near the ocean, Oppression is the boss theme, sunset... im not sure. I think its kind of the music for after you beat the boss? maybe a game over. its up to your imagination I think. and the credits are the credits.

well usually I play around on my piano for awhile until I find a cool chord progression or melody I guess. I used the Magical 8-Bit plugin for the NES sounds, and I made it all in Logic Pro.

Ocean - WATER! FISH! SWIM! DROWN!

File select - Time to select my file... And you have perfectly managed to convey the spirit of the file selection menu on old cartridges!

Your Home - I'm home! (Again, someone forgot to turn off the music in their room, heh)

Outside - I like that there is a more developed version of Your Home!

The Shore - Eh.. I can feel the shore by the sea. Sand, breeze, birds and a world full of adventures!

Opinion IS THE TIME OF COOLNESS! It sounds epic.

Sunset - It sounds optimistic)

Credits Are Ominous :)

I like your style and a good semblance of music for the NES! Cool!

Thanks)

thank you! (Ooh i can hear thunder outside! Its like the ocean but in the air)

Ocean: The swelling background pads feel like ocean waves, and then so do the arpeggios. Very nice imagery! I really like your main motif! This is good overall track development and this would fit an entire opening title sequence.

File Select: The gentle relaxed version of the main idea from the main theme is a great way to get ready for the game in the file select screen. It’s very creative representing the ocean with your sound channel.

Your Home: The gentle bass pulsing in the syncopated rhythm gives a sense of safety that works well for an indoor home theme.

Outside: Great variation of the indoor theme to give a little more motion to the track with the percussion. The way your two melodies work together is really cool and feels like a convergence in story elements.

The Shore: This is very nice and relaxing. I wonder if having the shore have a different melody and chords from the other themes would set it apart a little more as a stand-alone piece?

Oppression: It feels good to hear something very different! I like the use of muddled percussion and bass to sort of confuse the player about what is going on. The use of the Andalusian cadence works well here. I think the best part of this track is the melody that enters around 1:40. I think that having it enter sooner would help grab the player’s attention faster!

Sunset: This is a great way to return to the main theme in a gentle and relieving type of way after the boss battle. The 7th chords help give that bittersweet feeling of the journey concluding.

The Credits: These credits have a foreboding sound like we were left on a cliffhanger. I have a hard time taking James Bond out of my head while listening to this track, but I think it’s nice variation from other tracks you made.

Overall: This is really solid work and sounds like it belongs to an actual game from the NES era! Your main idea is polished and works well throughout the soundtrack. I especially like when you deviate from the main theme melody and chords and then return to them - they feel like home even more at those points. Well done and thank you for sharing!

I uh.. seemed to overuse leitmotifs. this is kinda my first time using them a lot, and I was having so much fun I didn't realize I was overusing them, Also thanks for the feedback! Honestly this is the best feedback I've ever gotten in my entire life! Thank you so much!

Enjoyed this one! I do agree with other comments that some parts cause ear fatigue and would suggest changing the sounds used (or jumping between sounds for the same voice or even doubling, which might kinda defeat some of the old style sound!). Overall, I love the creative usage of the white noise!! (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

Sound, harmony, arrangement, very consistent with the genre!

I like how the background represents accurately the ocean in the last track.

Good job!!

Developer(+1)

yeah! I created  ocean noises with white noise by just changing the attack and release of it. It turned out very well

This is a really good submission! Although they don't strictly follow the NES sound chip's capabilities, the songs definitely sound authentic - I can tell you have a good understanding of NES style. Your composition is impressive too, File Select and Credits are highlights of this for me.

My favourite track is probably Oppression, I saw in the comments of the YouTube video you didn't like the intro but I actually think it works quite well! It reminds me of Death by Glamour from the Undertale soundtrack. The rest of the song is great too, especially the lead in the main section.

Great job with this one!

Developer

*sigh* you know those times where you accidentally copy a song because you know it well? that's basically what happened with death by glamour. it had a similar buildup, and I was trying to think of a good way to make the intro "cooler"? more busy. and I ended up making that which turns out to be just me accidentally copying death by glamour. its fine, its still very different.also you sent the same message twice?

Deleted the other post... not sure why that happened.

In regards to accidentally copying songs, I end up doing that sometimes, to be honest I think that taking aspects of songs is fine (and is great for improving) as long as you change it enough and include it as part of a unique song (which you did!).

Developer

hehehhh..... yeahhhhh... no idea how that happened...

really nice tracks. Unique and catchy although some of them got a bit repetitive since they sounded similar.

Developer(+1)

I don't understand! people keep saying that! Its like no one understands what leitmotifs are! I mean, Shore uses the same chords as ocean, and uses two melody. the outside melody, and the ocean melody in the same song. that's probably why it sounds similar? idk

Submitted

I think that's probably it. 2 of the songs had the same melody. When I am just listening to them all and I hear the same melody twice for 2 different song I feel like there is some missed potential for more unique tracks.

Submitted

Solid entry and overall consistent. I liked Sunset and Shore the most (Sunset has ringtone vibes for some reason). If anything, I find the track a bit repetitive/uselessly long. An enjoyable collection of tracks, nice work!

Developer

Some of them feel repetitive because they're video game songs. if you listen to standard video game music, the standard mixing for video game music is looped twice and then fade out, but I didn't fade out because... well probably because I was lazy or something. and for uselessly long? it said a minimum of 3 minutes, but I wanted it long enough so I could upload it as an album and not as an EP on Spotify and Apple Music. Also who are you to tell me how long I should make my soundtrack? Theres not a restriction on how short I have to make it.

Very soothing opening track. Nice soundfont. Love the twinkly synth. Also oppression is really cool (the song o.o) I think the opening in synth there is pitched a little too low, but it still works pretty well. Overall, pretty awesome

Developer

(b-b-but.... theres no synthsss! Its all squares and triangles! and the oppression noise well... that's just how it is. the plugin has it like that. I coulldddvveee done a bit more work and pitched it slightly, but I just wanted to get it submitted because I procrastinated and I had like two days to finish it.

Submitted

when I said synth I must've been hearing a triangle then using the wrong terms lol. My bad

Submitted

Really nostalgic and I love the music ideas in the songs! I think it sound more like a pixel style rather than straight from the NES, but the composition is so fun! I would love to see you build out a story to the songs because they have a lot of emotion in them

Developer(+1)

Well I used the magical 8-bit plugin which uses NES instruments. I didn’t necessarily follow the NES “rules” (2square channels a triangle channel and a sound channel) but I did use those noises. The music capability changed greatly after the nes. The snes got much more noises and could do a Lot more. That’s why I said nes.
