  • The game plays well in the browser and the GDD is well written and a good base for the games development. It took me a bit until I could wrap around the movement with the isometric style of the game, after I got used to it it was going quite well. The jumping felt good and the sound effects are fun addition to the game. I'm not sure if its a bug or a feature that rooms can only be changed on the lowest layer of rooms, but I kinda got soft locked by it. The idea of mixing the three colors to add another complexity to it is pretty cool as well. The movement behind a wall is a bit tricky, so prolly try to make the players room column always the front one and wrap around rooms instead. Good prototype which shows the potential of the game.
  • The design document is well organized and very detailed. It's very easy to understand the development goals and the take on the theme. Using color to destroy black and white is a very creative take on the theme. Because of the use of color as a core to the gameplay, a lot of thought has been given to coloration in the design and style and those considerations are explained in the design document as well. There are also sample images provided as examples. I like the simple black and white artwork with vivid colors. It makes the game really pop. The level design is pretty straight forward, geometric platform challenges. The control scheme, on the other hand, takes quite a bit of getting used to. I had to start over a couple times before really feeling like I understood it. The choice to have the rooms flash their intended color before they move into line is very clean and conveys good information without being distracting. If you could make the first 3 rooms flash like that when the game loads in that would be a huge QoL improvement. There's a lot of challenge here, especially once you add in the additional mixing colors. I like the take on Tetris. It makes my brain hurt, but it was fun.

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
1-Bit Destroyer Ploppy Retris is a 3D based platformer and puzzler game about jumping on platforms to pick up colors and ultimately coloring rows and columns of black and white (1-Bit) rooms to combine them with the same colors which destroys them. All Rooms are moving from bottom to top in a Reverse Tetris Style, hence "Retris".

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
The theme “You Are the Weapon” is interpreted by making the player a being of the Color Dimension, destroying stolen Rooms of the Color Dimension with color in the Black and White (1-Bit) Dimension (where colored objects cannot exist) effectively returning them to the Color Dimension. The player is the weapon of color in a Black and White Dimension.

I love the ideas. There is a steep learning curve. I wasn't sure what to do or how to move. I'm still terrible with the controls but that is probably on me!

Hi there! Thank you. In the game menu (Escape or Start) there is a guide, with video and descriptions.

Okay, I wasn't convinced at first, but this is really fun. It definitely has a steep learning curve at the start, but once I got used to the control scheme, and memorizing which colors go where, and executing both platforming and watching the oncoming rooms at once, I can feel that this could be a fairly addicting arcade game.

It feels like the opportunity to score pairs is fairly inconsistent, since as far as I can tell the placement of rooms is random. It becomes a bigger problem once the secondary colors are introduced, as well. Maybe mixing in a room type that can take any color / a room that could take one of two colors would help?

My longest game so far (level 3) ended when I walked out a door to nowhere by mistake, and instead of bouncing me back like usual I got wedged between the invisible barrier and the room until that room migrated upward, at which point I fell out of the world.

Hi SableMP, Thank you so much for all the feedback, I am happy you had so much fun with it. Actually I am working for a new patch to be released after the jam results, and I have so many changes, improvements and new ideas already realized ! Enjoy.

I really like the idea here and the visuals. I personally would prefer if this played with a flat 2D perspective instead of isometric, but the game is still fun with the isometric view. I made it to level 3. Great game!

Developer

Hi there, thank you for the feedback, appreciate it ! A flat 2D mode is also a thing possible, basically.

For some reason I couldn't make jumping work. Nothing wanted to let me make any new landing.

Developer

Hi that's unfortunate. It should just work well in latest Firefox (134.0.2 as of now is what I used to test the game). Try to play it directly on the game page.

I found it very difficult to navigate with WASD because it seems they are tied to isometric directions. It looks very visually appealing so I wish i could play it more easily it looks good!

Hi there, thank you ! Yes, it is  bound to the camera angle, so if you rotate the camera the direction changes. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense anymore. It's basically just a thing to get used to. After a bit you can do it fluently. It should work with controllers also, try the left joystick. I think it's easier.

i didn't know you could rotate the camera i'll try again

I tried again with rotation and was able to move around a little better and grab the buckets but i didn't know what i was supposed to do afterwards!

Hi there! That's nice to hear.. In the game menu there is a guide, with video and descriptions. You can also find an overview of the keyboard controls in the menu (Escape or Start Button). Basically you pick up colors and color the rooms with it. Aligned rooms of the same color will be destroyed like in Tetris and you get Points added to your highscore.

Share your best highscore hehe
