Title
Komorebi (木漏れ日)

Description
Komorebi (木漏れ日) is a Japanese word that translates to something like "The light that filters throug the trees' leaves"
I know this because:
A) I am learning japanese
B) I'm an animator and like learning about japanese animation

Most of my inspiration when making jam songs are scenes I imagine and I actually wanted to also draw some artwork for this, but I have no time to do that.

I guess this is also a mix of everything I've learned in this game jams so there is for example:
- The exodreams with delay that SOMEONE always says it is a cat
- Drum patterns I learned when making "Inner concert"
- 8-bit bird chirps
- Triangle waves (I love them)
- The piano from "Broken lifts"

I really love this one and I hope you enjoy :)

Lots to talk about!

First of all, the arrangement is surprisingly pleasant.

The first surprise is the little flute melody. It's simple, it's pretty. Then you throw in a big drumbeat that wakes us up. I love being surprised like that.

I like the variations in arrangement you propose, especially the flute and xylophone melody that switches to a synth triangle at 1'32". The little undertale noises (?) are also earcandies.

My favorite passage is at 2'50" with the pads in detune, it's soaring and very pretty.

On the question of mix and technique, there are two points on which I think you can improve your composition:

1 - Your 50% square has too short an attack (0ms?) and there's a little click on each note. You could use a short 5ms attack to correct this problem without altering the sound.

2 - Allow yourself more variation on the drums (stop the cymbals, double the tempo or divide it by 2).

I hope my advice inspires you. In any case, I think it's a solid composition which, thanks to your ingenious variations, makes for an enjoyable 4 minutes 40 of music.

Thank you for the feedback! The drums seem to be the thing that is getting the most criticism so I’ll definitely work on that for the future!

Also I had a lot of fun making the song have different sections.

The drums could use a bit more variation at times, but they do sound nice! The lead sound, in my opinion is a bit loud. Some sounds could have some variation (dynamic or timbre change) maybe?

I like the variations you made (B-parts) and the sounds/instruments are cool! Overall it's a lovely piece <3

This music has a unique combination of sounds that I've never really heard together, it's pretty fascinating.

I'd love to learn more about the intent behind each instrument included. I understand that this song is about 木漏れ日, so I'm curious what the drum line is meant to portray. I usually imagine a scene with Komorebi as a warm, peaceful day, and most of your instruments do give that vibe, except for those rock(?) drums, which kind of seem out of place to me.

Here is a little insight of what my process was:

First of all this is my second attempt at using the leitmotif for the jam, my first attempt was more of a EDM type of song that I didn’t like that much, then when I thought of Komorebi so I tried with that and I liked it a lot more.

Most of the instruments didn’t have a lot of thought behind them, I just added what “felt right” in the context of the song.

An example of what fell right are the pianos, I didn’t know what to put, but I knew I wanted some chords to transition into the final part of the song and since I know that this specific piano goes well with triangle waves, so I did that.

The little koto sections where originally guitars (there was actually a version with me playing that part in guitar), but because of the japanese theme I decided to switch to a koto which in my opinion sounds better anyways. (I am very proud of the ending of this song)

The flute is kind of the same story as a koto, originally it was a sine wave before turning into a flute to fit the theme.

I liked adding the little 8-bit chirp noises, they are supposed to be little birds in a way. (You know because of trees and nature).

Also while making the song I had a very specific shade of green in my head for some reason, I guess it is because I draw a lot.

I like the drums, it makes the song a little more upbeat which is what I was going for, something you would listen to relieve stress or something and I think it works (I have turned it now into my drawing BG music), but I understand if they seem out of place. (Yes they are indeed rock inspired)

I like combining wierd instruments, especially chiptune instruments with literally anything else.

I hope you liked it and I’m excited to listen to all the other songs when I get the time to do it. (‾◡◝)

This is very cute, it put me in a good mood. I think the 8 bit sounds and triangle waves work well with the flute. It would be interesting to try and have other percussion instruments instead of drums, maybe even some toy-like sounds, something childish. It could make the track even cuter

thank you, I’m happy this put you in a good mood. I love triangle waves I think they are the best.
