Hah, there's a lot of really fun surprises in this one, and I probably still missed multiple bullet pattern references. I kinda suck at actual Touhou games so it's neat to have deaths be the score. Great entry overall, it's hard to pick a favorite aspect so I'll just say the music was very enjoyable for butterfly related reasons.

Thank you!

hohohoho. is that a dundertale? well now i have to play this one. well done on using the fitting yellow soul instead of the default red. then you're hittin me with the gengetsu zone? classic stuff

it kinda seems useless to break the screen barriers for the spell immediately following to barely use any width but is cool later for the big spin portion. collision seems a bit off but not unplayably so

the second and third to final patterns i did not get the reference for (my money is on bsom) and the final one rocked my shit despite not using any bullets

played this one through twice since it is a real nice one and death count for second attempt is 35. great stuff

Developer

Thank you! Yes the reference is supposed to be BoSM but we haven't had the time to put more into it. Glad you liked the game!

A pretty nice danmaku game, although I suspect I may have experienced some issues due to the refresh rate of my monitor(?). Honest Man's Death didn't function as in the games and actually forced me to go Left-Right-Left-Right between the lanes, and Resurrection Butterfly had the waves overlap.

Apart from that, I think the player damage is a bit low, which caused me to always enter the impossible-to-dodge timeout phase of Cute Innocence. I guess the idea was that Satori is pulling out the most traumatic spells from Reimu's past, but the first thing I ask myself when I play a danmaku jam game (especially ones with infinite lives, like your game) is whether I can trust the game to be fair and dodgeable, and spells like these do not help. I do think your game mostly is fair - which is why I like it - but still. Also, is the final spell weirdly laggy? Finally, I loved the visual gimmicks (UI breaking, Sans-like fight). Good job!

Best score: 28 deaths.

Developer

Thank you for your criticisms! I can assure you that the spells mess-ups are the fault of myself only, I didn't have time to tune it enough unfortunately.

That was super cool! I love that you don't have lives, only a death counter, so even someone like me can play through to the end

Developer

Thank you!

Game looks fantastic, and I like all the callbacks, and the 4th wall breaks... My one criticism is the difficulty. Sure, I get it's supposed to be hard, but the hitboxes are pretty unforgiving. So when you should be barely making it, or you're even doing pretty well, you're actually taking hits left and right. Also there aren't many SFX, so you have to rely a lot on your eyes.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the criticisms. I'll make sure to do better next time!

A nice take on a danmaku medley, I've seen lots of them, so I can say the art gives a nice vibe to this one, it takes a lot of tricks of the book so its interesting to watch.

That was so charming; I loved all the references and leitmotifs, and especially that part when the game shattered the aspect ratio. Nice job.

This was a pretty neat danmaku game, I liked how it was basically a montage of final attacks, and the part where the restrictions on the sides broke away was really cool. Looks good too, and the title screen music is great! However I didn't think the jam theme was incorporated well...

BTW what's the music playing during the last phase? I can't tell if it's based on a Touhou song or if it's original.

Developer

Thank you! And, yeah we kind of gave up on the theme a bit into the jam. The last track was Hate not the Wind, Spring Blossoms ~ Eternal Wind, one of the tracks from the Touhou Fangame called Book of Star Mythology which the final attack is based off of.

  • Very nice looking and smooth to control! Interesting dialog.
  • The window was a bit offscreen for me (I'm on 1080p) even when made smaller, unless I hid my windows taskbar, but fullscreen made that a non-issue.
  • The background is very pretty but the bright spots made me unable to track bullets in front of them.
  • In some parts, the bullets were just too fast and too many for me to ever hope to dodge.
Developer

Thank you! I haven't had the time to clean up the background, sorry about that! I'll take your criticisms to heart going into the next jam.

Interesting game, good implementation of danmaku and dialogs.

After Sans I expected it to be more about references to other games rather than Touhou, since the mysterious book could have these references, but sadly there is only "Fight against your own equipment" sounds like it could be one.

Agree with people that some patterns are way too long, also maybe hard, at least for me. On some of these I was dying non-stop.

P.S. thanks for sharing  that WIP of main theme on Discord, it was icing on cake that was delivered before cake ;)

Developer

Thank you! Referencing other games is initially what we were going for but I worried that it would be far out there and people wouldn't get it so we toned it back to mostly Touhou references. "Fight against your own equipment" is just another Touhou reference sadly. Again, thank you for the criticisms. We'll do better next jam!

very nice bullet hell action, you got me with the random sans reference lol

Developer

Thank you, that was my proudest moment even though it had nothing to do with the theme at all, haha.

I liked the references, but I am not sure about which song title you used for the theme.
Some patterns go on for bit too long, but overall good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the review. To be honest, I kinda gave up on the theme halfway through the jam. The original idea is to use Sealed Demon's Finale as the theme with the whole thing being a Fuma reference.
