A text-based adventure, most intriguing. I quite liked it. I enjoyed the story, so much so that there are a few things I wish were explored more in depth. Also, maybe it's just me, but there were a few times where I almost miss reading some scenes because after typing a command my eyes jumped straight to the last line, missing all the new text added after said command.
All that aside, I've only had limited exposure to this genre of games but I'm happy I was able to complete this one without the guide (and some trial and error). It felt so nice when I reached the end and realized that there was only one command left to type -- the one we've been waiting for!
Thanks! I'll have to see about pacing the text. I'm hoping that whenever I get around to adding dialogue, it'll add some depth to parts that were merely touched upon.
TOOK me this look after originally trying but it being impossible
i dislike text-based interaction to begin with because it tries to be natural and intuitive but ends up being esoteric and not very natural at all (python). to be honest. same thing here. guess thats just parta the medium
but WITHIN those constraints cool game cool game i like the areas and taking everything in sight without knowing how to use any of it without a guide
the palette of touhous you got here is pretty good i like how the name is like the song and you do the three dates and they get continuously more parsee-involved
i almost got the second and third dates without a guide but for some reason the grate only does anything if you meet okuu in the dining room and i did not know i was carrying a bowl of rice in the third one
but the parts of the puzzles i did get were pretty cool. so was trying to bruteforce the game which included trying to kiss everybody
yuugi pretty funny
thanks for the guide
Thanks! I do prefer point-and-clicks, but making one is beyond my skill set unfortunately.
In the second date, preventing the puzzle solution from happening early is a bit of an adventure game trick to avoid sequence breaking. Orin's probably still wandering the vents until you meet Okuu. (Unless she popped up before meeting Okuu, in which case that's a bug)
I'll try to rework the rice since it is unexpected to get an item at the start.
"Two liars in love" is such a great line. This was a great story: it hit me at the end how well you wrote Yuugi (she's one of my favorite characters).
Pretty fun and story is engaging and sweet.
There were times where I wish there was a talk command though, it could have helped when examining isn't enough to get an idea of how to progress. Most notably I think of how to repel Suika (even though the beans thing is a rather well known fact, not everyone knows it's a thing), the Megumu situation (like, who's going to randomly give rice to a sobbing person without talking to them?) or Utsuho being worried (not being able to talk to her, I just... had to go somewhere else I guess).
And that can leave players kinda stuck trying things one by one instead of being led by a subtle nudge - that's something to watch out for imo.
Thanks! Whenever I get to work on the dialogue, I'll try to integrate hints and puzzles into it.
I love, love, LOVE text adventures, so I was very excited to see this come across the Jam submissions. I did initially get stuck on the Suikas, but it's still a very cute game overall. I wish there was more dialogue available, but considering how hard it is to program a game like this, I understand why that wasn't the case. This does result in points where frustration can set in with limited items and commands, but this feels like a Touhou fangame if it were made in the 80s, and I very much appreciate that.
Im not sure how Id go rating or commenting on this. Like, so many of the jam's categories are irrelevant to anything a choose your own adventure text scrawl like this would be going for and while I cant say "it scored high on visuals" or "it had great music/sound design", I have no doubt that the experience I had playing was quiet enjoyable and something that successfully got me invested. Its weird and is one of the examples of how the existing scoring system for the jam can be flawed. As for things about the game's content, heavily enjoyed the writing and how the game responded to some of my interactions. Good game, big thumbs up.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! As for ratings, as long as it does well in the categories I focused on, I'll be happy.
i'll be honest i dont know how to do this at all
i took all of parsees stuff but she wont talk to me using any of the commands in the help document or with a variety of other words like "talk" or "greet" or "throw"
its probably cool but without giving me a visible array of my options at any given time (which i imagine is an engine limitation) i am not making any progress here
i humbly request some sort of assistance so i can review it properly
normally i would just cheat but this zblorb file is quite binary and quite an enigma
I wanted to add dialogue options, but ran out of time. I try to add them eventually, as it'll enhance the story.
I added a walkthrough with the necessary actions to go through the game.
