well, i've certaintly experienced all the stages of boredom. Which I don't fully consider bad since I've been able to see parallels between the gameplay and real life. Like I would just play videogames because time was going faster (which is absolutely NOT what I'm doing RIGHT NOW xD). But I believe it's totally possible to turn the mechanics into something fun for everyone and still showing the theme.
This is the kind of games I like usually, and the kind of games I make (for the GMTK jam last year my game was about panic attacks.). A game can talk about anything and still be a enjoyable experience (fun not always being the correct term) and I think with more thinking on the game design, that could be a great game. If you tell me you're gonna continue the game, I would definitly follow you.
Thanks for the kind words! I know I spent too much time on the story rather than on game design, with a little more thought put into the enjoyability of the game it could have become much better!
I might actually decide to work on it some more time after the jam, I think I'll still keep the core and the finale, but adding some more things to do (like chatting, someone that knocks on your door, all kinds of events that could happen, and make them more interesting and less tedious) and a system to actually write the answers of the test, instead of fading to black and having a grade. Some more voiceacting (and made better) to other actions like dying in the minigame, and things like that.
If you have any suggestion of sorts you should absolutely write them here, it would really help! Also, I can tell you if you want to playtest it XD
Anything i wrote down below is MY thoughts about the game so if you are reading this and decide to not to play the game, Don't do that (i mean don't give up playing this game) and play the game, these are MINE thoughts, maybe you will like it
Hi.. Now i don't want you to misunderstand me but... Game was way too boring without any chalanges.. Now you have a great potential, your art style was good, and i am sure you did quite much programming for that.. You are great, just focus on something which keeps players engaged..
I won't lie, i didn't play to the end.
But i liked your style, just make sure making a game which engages player to the end..
btw i came here from play for plays so can you return favor https://itch.io/jam/wowie-jam-3/rate/940979?
That's fine, not every game is for everyone and, as many here said, making a game with boredom as a core concept is quite a difficult thing to settle down. I just wanted to make something story-based after my last game that was just an endless runner without story, but I understand this may not have been the best subject. Anyway, I will definetly play your game :D
Thanks for understanding me, i would be sad if you misunderstood me..
Yeah making boredom core concept must be pretty hard, considering that you made a great game :)
I love stories too (but i am bad at making them lol). Maybe you can mix a good gameplay and a good story? I believe you could do it :)..
Thanks !
Making a good balance of gameplay and story is the objective for the next jam!
I like this game! Great art and gameplay! Good job!
Please check my game as well ;)
Thank you! I'll definetly check out your game tomorrow! (It's 22 in Italy!)
Very nice idea :) I like that the time pass as I am doing activities. The music during the pc minigame was so good :)
Whaaaaat, really? That thing? XD I made it with literally 6 notes in 5 minutes and hated it, but I'm happy you liked it!
this is definitely a creative idea! Making the time pass faster when playing pc "simulates" very well my real life XD. The "study" mechanic feels a bit too slow, i would have liked to see what happens when you complete to study.
If you click on the "Study" bar down below, it charges by 1% and 1 minute passes, so you can study without actually leaving the game open 8 hours. Also, I think (didn't have time to test completely) that if you click on the study bar most of the time, you get an OK grade!
Good job on finishing the game! I think theres some good stuff here and stuff to be improved.
first of all the art and voice acting is really nice, and the story you managed to deliver was really cool, but the actual gameplay lacks a bit, Basing a game on the consept of boredom can be problematic, becuase it makes the player not really want to continue, I ended up just letting the time run out by itself becuase there wasnt much to do.
il say that from a story based point of view it works, but from the player's side, it just feels repetitive and unfun.
good job on taking risks and trying new stuff, Maybe next time you will manage to make the game more engaging :)
Thanks for the feedback! After 2 games where I only made gameplay, I tried doing something more story based, and failing.. In retrospect, I would add a "Wait" button to super-speed up the timer, eliminating the parts where the player.. well.. waits. Or making the actual "in game" game more fun, but there wasn't much time to do so unfortunately. Next time I'll try to balance gameplay and story better. All in all, it was a good learning experience for me, and it helped me let out my problems creating something. I'll make sure to play and rate your game, too!
Interesting game, I enjoyed the time mechanic and how it physically moved faster while playing the game and slowed while studying. It is a simple idea that is well executed. It plays into the theme very nicely as well.
If you wanted to improve, I suggest making the game a lot shorter, maybe 1 day instead of 7. That would allow you to still get the same point across without forcing the play to give a huge time investment.
Overall, cool game!
Yes, making it 1 or 2 days would have let me add more events like texts from friends and family, lunch and dinner, and add variety to fight the inevitable boredom of gameplay. I'm still happy you liked it all in all, and I'll make sure to play and rate your game, too!
