The Zerg influence definitely shows! I'm Protoss myself so Legacy of the Void was my favourite, but I thought Heart of the Swarm was amazing too.
Any tips on your favourite jams to compete in that I should be looking out for as a newbie? At this point the next one on my list is the next Brackeys one.
Yeah I made falling end that one level because it's impossible to win once you get down there - will try to find more ways to let players be creative in future.
This was my first game jam so a lot of basics, but I think I learned more this past 2 weeks (also entered the Brackeys jam) than I have in the many months I've been learning before! The thing I spent the most time on was character movement, and getting it to feel fair when you die rather than feeling like the game was screwing you over.
P.S. just played your game - I love the mechanic of evolving to adapt against what killed them. The whole thing feels very Zerg-like.
It's impossible to finish the level if you fall down there given that you only have 4 lives, so that's why I put in the insta-kill. I guess I could have left it up to the player to encourage more creativity though, will avoid taking that away in future!
Very addicting gameplay loop - landing in the junkyard is a nice touch and I like that the text you get after each run is in context to how far you got.
One thing I would say is that sometimes it feels like it's impossible to dodge all the obstacles coming at you at once, but that is mitigated a bit once you get the laser, so only a minor gripe!
Great concept and great visuals! I would mirror the feedback that moving to the right offsets the character by half a tile and that was a bit jarring, but otherwise very interesting!
