Unity, Unreal or other? Which do you use?

I am interested to see if the itch community uses Unity, Unreal or something else, and why. What is it that makes you use say, Unreal instead of something else. Graphics quality? Nodes? Tutorials and support? Post why you use a certain game engine and what it is.

I personally use Unity with much prior experience with Unreal. For me, Unity was the right option as I wanted to be able to script, but Unreal's scripting crashed my computer. Unity also has more support and tutorials. This made me continue with Unity to make indie games.

I mainly use Gamemaker Studio (1). I'm sticking to 2D games because making 3D stuff seems too time consuming to me currently. Also I've been using it for years so I can pump out games effectively.

I've also made some stuff with PICO-8 but the restrictions are a bit much for what I want to create. Maybe in the future I'll give Godot a go.

I use unity.

Cool! I've checked out Gamemaker Studio before, but then switched to Unity.  I might look at Godot as well in future...

These days I use LÖVE at home, mostly because it offers a ton of flexibility and works well for rapid iteration.

As for how I made the decision… I spent a few months testing game engines a couple years back, basically making the same game in a week and changing to another engine at the week’s end. The best prototype I got out of that was from LÖVE’s round, which came as a bit of a surprise.

That's interesting, because Unity uses C# to make games. In fact, I have rarely seen Lua. Cool!

I currently use Unity, but that's mostly because the game I'm working on is 2D. I do have some ideas for a 3D title, but that's some ways away, and by then I might not want to switch engines unless I really really want to. I've heard good things about Godot, though, so I might look at that.

I use Unity, mainly because that's what I started with and I haven't thought of a good reason to switch just yet. I work on 2D and 3D projects and it can handle both. I tried Unreal a bit, but didn't get far. It's very interesting with a lot of features for sure, but I did like being able to use C# in Unity and continuing to develop that so that I could use some of the knowledge on non-game projects also.

I used to use Unity, but I'm now switching to Castle. Unity and Unreal were the only publicly accessible engines back when I took interest in game development. I had chosen Unity over Unreal for the creative freedom. Unreal is designed for rapid clone generation, which is not an option for me because I don't like my creativity to be put in a box. Unity was the empowerment engine that made it easy to do anything you can imagine. But over recent years, Unity has been leaning hard into the same clone-generation infrastructure as Unreal, and their new features have all kinds of automated crap that has made it impossible for me do my work the way I want. Castle was a result of a couple weeks of searching and comparing on all the engine options out there. It has quite a learning curve, but it looks like a pretty powerful little engine.

Yep, that's it!

Its graphics capabilities are not going to win any awards at the moment, but there is something you should understand about Castle engine. It has been developed by 1 person for several years, which focused primarily on whatever he, personally, needed from it. The creator has recently expanded the development by hiring a team of something like five more people, and they are now showing great advancement of the engine's capabilities every few days. I think by maybe a year from now, Castle could become competitive with Unity/Unreal/Godot, if they keep up this level of progress. Structurally, it seems very solid as-is.

nice i have benn developing my game engine for 1 year and because I am only 16 and I have high school I just quit so it's cool I will try it maybe I will stick with it

That is very ambitious. And you are only 16? With that kind of drive, you are going to be a real competitor in this world throughout your life.

Unity all the way!

I'm just getting started with games. I've programmed web applications for years, and the technical challenge of making games interests me just as much as the final product, so I've been making games from scratch using the Odin programming language. Of course, the games I'm making are very simple right now, but I'm having a ton of fun.

I use Godot to make my games.  I started off using a free version of Game Maker Studio, years ago.  I then took a bit of a break, then found Scratch 2 and made some games with that.  At one point I found Blender. 

 At first it was a bit frustrating, because I couldn't quite get it to work the way I wanted or figure it out.  Eventually, though, I did (with the help of some tutorials)and made some games.

 In there, before fully using Godot, I tried it out but it wasn't quite working for me so I stuck with Blender.  At one point, though, someone suggested using Godot, or a similar engine to it, so I went and tried it out again and through the help of tutorials and stuff started making games.
