This is great and really captures how unforgiving Foddy games are. The controls are precise enough that if you didn't hit something it's very much your fault, but once you are hit, there is no chance for recovery and it is made very clear, and your character will get launched into the previous dimension and you will cry about it. It's unfair not because you were unfairly hit, but because you were fairly hit and very unfairly punished. The level design really works for this - there's no section that requires very perfect input and precision, most sections are about flow and knowing what to input and just trying to generally time it to stay high enough, unless you're going for a speedrun route, and a lot of the game is muscle memorying the initial keybinds, once you win you can fairly consistently win. But the vertical folding of the level is brilliant and there are gaps everywhere so when you lose a section you are guaranteed to go back several sections. It's also nice how distinct the sections are, you roughly know how far up or down you are as you know this is the "SMACK MONKEY" text part, this is the part with several vines, etc. and it feels like you can process the level in chunks rather than an endless onslaught that burns you out.
Thank you for building for Linux! Wine is pretty hit or miss. I definitely ragequit too fast but I really liked the aesthetic and gameplay, at least in the beginning areas.
Quite the satisfying rage game you've made here. I've never really played one of these kinds of games before so I'm not quite great at it, but I played for about two hours and I really like the subtle effects, like the particles, the squashing and stretching of the player, the shifting of the pitch of the sound effects depending on your speed. It all comes together in such a nice way that just feels very satisfying to control.
Anyway this is about as far as I'm going in this game. No idea how much of the game is left, but what I played was pretty nice.
The only thing is, the climbing animation has a weird thing going on with seeing parts of the sprite sheet you're probably not supposed to see.
Everything else is really great, though! I really enjoy this game
Glad you like the game!
That gif you attached is actually the final climb, those vines to the left bounce you across to [the end].
Thanks for point out that sprite sheet error too
Thanks!! :)
Oh wow lol so I guess I was nearing the end. Although, to be honest, I'd probably have to get up there like 20 more times to be able to pass it, so for me I guess it's not really that close to the end lmao
Amazing game!! I'm not really a player of Foddian Platformers so I didn't stick around much after the first few "areas," but the game is really fluid and fun to play while also being unforgiving. Great job with the mechanic and level design! The art also really pops.
:)
